Sony Centre UK celebrates Blu-ray's victory

Engadget reader Raheem spotted this cheap shot on the door of Sony Centre in London, just in case anyone's not sure of the latest developments in the high definition format war. Ouch, still, they may want to fax that over to Dreamworks Animation, cc: Jeffrey Katzenberg. Check after the break for another pic of the atrocity.

Btw, what is HD-DVD? Another format? I knew HD DVD had given up but I did not know of HD-DVD.

Well... it's not as big of a sign as it looks like in the first shot, and it is a valid point, HD did throw in the towel. There are tons of people out there that dont spend all their time like I do watching for new Engadget posts. I haven't caught the fact that Blu won on mainstream nightly news, and I'm sure there will still be a good chunk of people that will walk into a store and buy cheap HD players without talking to a sales person (I know I never do) not figure out until it's too late why it was such a 'bargin'. Some people (non-technologically-obsessed) need a big freakin sign in their face flat out telling them what is going on

One side comment. I've been following the whole war ever since it started and only now do realise it's called HD DVD, not HD-DVD.

Just a comment.

However by the same token, I've seen people call Blu-ray Blu-Ray, Bluray, Blue Ray, and Blue-Ray. One format which is even worse is DVD-Audio. Apart from 99.999995% of the world's population not knowing what the heck it is, it's been called DVD Audio, Audio DVD, Audio-DVD, DVDAudio, DVD (go figure), and most enthusiasts of the format end up calling it DVD-A anyway, to confuse things even more.

What is it these format names! keep it simple!

Richard, is this really necessary? This post, and the "truckloads of cash" line that you purposely crossed out on the Dreamworks post for everyone to see, only exacerbates the bitterness or resentment some HD DVD owners may have. We now have one optical format (albeit incomplete) to worry about now. Can't you and your fellow bloggers promote it without continuously rubbing it in people's faces?

I wonder if Engadget would be so free with these posts if Warner had chosen HD DVD and company after company withdrew their support for Blu-ray in the ensuing weeks.

you know, for a format that seems to be dead, i foudn this information on amazon.co.uk for prerelease dates for hddvds

MI and MI2 - 6/30
Cloverfield - 7/20
sky captain - 5/26
I am legend - 5/12
beowolf - 3/17

plus many many others. Theres over 40 different HDDVD preorders with release dates. So how is this dead? Oh wait, ONLY IN AMERICA is it dead. So blu can cheer all they want believing they killed it, but all they did was end the compition over here which will jack up prices where as the rest of us can continue to enjoy New rleases imported at the same great 20-30.00 price mark

Pretty sad the top 10 HD DVDs are outselling the top 10 Bluray movies right now and are a hair away from outselling the top 25 too!! Sure it's the format war's fault Bluray isn't selling well......How about,NOOO Scot!!

ah ha, now endgadget is callign this a atrocity??? You guys been on the blu band wagon bashing hd left and right. Dont try and suck up now, all us hd and purple fans see what you are for what you've done. Your HD post have been anti HD since the begining, and now that you consider it done, ur trying to say oh hd this and hd that.

As i read before, it wasnt the CONSUMERS that decided the war, it was the corps that decided it for us. So how can you claim that you won when it was decided by companys and not by consumers. Thats like hillary winning the presidency because big corp busniess and superdelegates decided it even tho the voters are voting the other way. You didnt win, corp's just bullied thier way to forcing blu on us

thank god it still ranks high in other countries where we can still ahve choice and importing options.

Here you are claiming they are defending HD DVD with this post while above you people are claiming they (Engadget) are taking another cheap shot at HD DVD with this post. You guys are totally clueless. There has never been a slant one way or the other except what the fanboys are imagining.
