DivX shutting down Stage6
In a somewhat sudden announcement, DivX has decided to close the door on its Stage6 service. Reportedly, upload functionality has already been halted, but videos will still be available for viewing / downloading until February 28th. According to a DivX employee, the service simply became too unwieldy (and expensive) to manage, and while it did toss out the option of selling the service to someone else, things evidently didn't pan out. Adios, Stage6 -- 'twas a fun ride.

Sux..I'm not liking this.

I bet this had everything to do with bootleg movies showing up on the site. In the next couple of weeks or months, we'll see some studio investing in DivX.

Hi,
There are and will continue to be other solutions, because youtube is the warehouse not the boutique, and will never care about specific users or their needs, just the mass, lowest-common denominator.
For example, www.SUMO.TV that operate with a different model to youtube and has local operations from Brazil, israel, India to China.
However, sometimes, companies/people just dont want to fight on.
Yours kindly,
Shakir Razak

I know! I was so sad, just found out from their site. I use Stage6 all the time. Definitely "copyright infringement" was going on, but it wasn't a "pirate's central" either. There was lots of old foreign stuff, lots of shows made for free internet distribution, videogame screen grabs, etc. So much HD, 1080p stuff too.
I saw people on their forums saying "Stage6 Alternative" *blah blah*, but only linked to sites with crappy layouts and low quality flash video, basically youtube with less selection.
If anyone knows of something truly similar to Stage6, PLEASE post. :)

The closest site i know of to Stage6 is Veoh
Rafer @ Feb 25th 2008 8:20PM
Veoh still uses flash right?

dailymotion.com has hd videos now so that would get closest to stage6, but i think its flash video so it won't be as fast as stage6

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I love Stage6! Excellent quality, alot of diversity and amazing load times. Perhaps the service was too good.

I know. I love it. The videos are awesome and all easy to find. Whenever I start to like something, it goes out. And it was free. I was willing to pay to get all the selection of hd music videos. Does anyone know of simmilar site with higher quality music videos, for free of, course?
Thanks

Only Veoh comes close

Dammit. What a loss. Let's hope Veoh and Dailymotion keep their love of Korean and Japanese TV programs going strong.

Yeah got an email from them on this. What a disappointment. It was a nice community

Its a damn shame, all of the other DIVX sites I know are pirate hangouts that get squashed within two weeks of going on line. Hopefully something rises to replace it

Stage6.com is gone but stage6.999.org is here
It has the same look as stage6 with channels etc. and a great community.
