After Time Warner Cable apparently
pulled a fast one on subscribers in Queens and Brooklyn, NY by advertising its
Woodside additions to the rest of the community -- but then not following through -- we've pictorial evidence that those newcomers are indeed making their way around. 'Course, it's a few weeks later than expected, but we suppose it's better than CNN HD, MHD, History Channel HD, A&E HD, Food Network HD, Lifetime Movies HD, HGTV HD, Versus / Golf HD and NHL Network HD
not making the rounds. As of now, we're seeing that the channels have indeed been added to the EPG, but there's no video to go along just yet. Still, we're expecting 'em to go live anytime, so hold tight and keep an eye on your set. [
Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]
[Thanks, Vin P.]
Update: As of February 29th, the channels have been removed from the EPG in Queens / Brooklyn. The latest word from TWC is "coming soon." Bummer.

I've been seeing this since yesterday. I've called time warner, but the customer service reps don't really seem to know much. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Matt @ Feb 23rd 2008 7:16PM
Why does my Time Warner channel guide not look like that? Mine looks like ass compared to that. :(
carlos @ Feb 23rd 2008 7:36PM
because your cable box is not using MYstro the new software that time warner cable has. I have two cable boxes at home one is HD which is using mystro and the other one is using the software passport.
stiltskin @ Feb 25th 2008 1:18AM
Woah mine looks like ass too that SARA from scientific atlanta that records 2 hours hd and 10 standard
carlos @ Feb 23rd 2008 7:37PM
I wonder when they will bring those channels to Manhattan.
Allen G. @ Feb 24th 2008 7:09AM
Never...
Vin P. @ Feb 23rd 2008 8:01PM
Still no video, Im hopeful for Monday....
JP @ Feb 23rd 2008 8:43PM
I have 2 hd dvr from time warner and live in woodside and was wondering if theres any major difference between the passport interface and the mystro interface. Thanks.

I wish Patmedia would finally expand.
kevin @ Feb 24th 2008 12:48AM
Haha finally a patmedia comrade. At least we are getting a few more channels that we did last year now that patmedia is owned by Comcast. I think they should be rolling out with more HDs now to match Comcast's offerings
hector @ Feb 24th 2008 5:21AM
how weird, i have them on my box and i can perfectly watch them
kyleh85 @ Feb 24th 2008 8:42AM
Hector. Where are you located?
Vin P. @ Feb 24th 2008 10:11AM
Perhaps Hector is in Woodside or Astoria where the channels have been active for a while. But Im curious too if that's where he lives. I think TWC is finishing up the analog conversion to digital and/or activating SDV in the rest of QUeens thats why the channels are on the verge of being active.
alex @ Feb 25th 2008 1:18AM
I haven't seen any new channels on the guide, and I'm in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
riggs @ Feb 25th 2008 8:24AM
when the hell are these retards going to bring some to manhattan?
kyleh85 @ Feb 25th 2008 1:15PM
Well, it's Monday, and still no picture. I called Time Warner again, and sill no new info. I'm going to make a suggestion that everyone who reads this call Time Warner! If 100 people called a day asking the same question, maybe these customer service reps might actually ask someone higher up and get some more info! Then again, it is Time Warner, so my expectations aren't very high. Here is the number. 718-358-0900
Vin P. @ Feb 25th 2008 9:37PM
Kyle,
I called this evening..actually got a tech rep that knew a little something. She said the new HD channels in the guide arent a fluke and its in process of coming online. Its tied to the Analog--Digital Conversion. As of Thirsday, Analog is gone and its digital only with TWC in Queens and Brooklyn (maybe Manhattan too) so soon after we should be getting more HD channels like Staten Island and Woodside are getting. She also said these HD Channels may come online before Thurs. Hope that helps.
kyleh85 @ Feb 25th 2008 10:00PM
Vin,
Thanks for the info. I had called three times in the last week and still hadn't gotten a clear answer from them. The people I had talked to were clueless. I am hopeful that this will all come to fruition in the next week and we will have some new HD content to enjoy. Thanks again.
Austin @ Feb 26th 2008 2:59AM
Well.. that's good news (finally) but I have a more pressing issue I wanted to ask the other TWC Brooklyn/Queens customers here - Has anyone else noticed a visable drop in broadcast quality pretty much throughout the entire HD channel selection spectrum starting this past weekend (Saturday or so)?? Even though we don't have the new channels yet.. it looks like TWC has already chocked the bandwidth to make room for the new stuff that's coming..
-HBO HD is showing much more macroblocking and minor compression artifacts than before. This was always one of the better looking 1080i channels.
-Showtime HD is even worse. I'm even seeing compression artifacts in the blacks now!! Also, this channel was one of the best HD-looking on the channel roster. The degregation in PQ is disgusting :(.
-Discovery HD is pretty much the same.. they might have cut a sliver of bandwidth on this channel thusfar but looking better than HBO or Showtime now..
-Can't really say much on the major network HD broadcasts other than ABC (watched the Oscars last night). I swear it looked bandwidth choked a bit as well.
-Even SD channels (like AMC) were looking worse for wear. Watched 'Breaking Bad' last night and could see compression artifacts all over that shit..
So, basically I'd like to know if anyone else has noticed this or if I'm starting to lose it over here? It just seems to me that TWC is starting to really bit-starve these channels in order to bring in 7 or so new HD channels. But it begs the question: if all the HD channels are going to be bit-starved in order to add more programming (due to bandwidth limitations..), then is it really worth it in the end? I'd rather have 10 high quality HD channels than 20 bit-starved ones. I HATE seeing compression artifacts in broadcasts.. it reminds me of yesteryear when some early DVD releases were poo-poo on the compression front.
I have a 1080p 42" Panasonic Plasma going through HDMI and I can sure as hell tell a noticible PQ difference from even last week's broadcasts over the TWC system here in Brooklyn. I count the days when Verizon Fios comes into town.. I'm sick of paying more and more for cable and getting less. And if TWC is so touting their "switched digital" system.. well I can say that I don't see it working thusfar.
Hmm... Any other comments would be insightful.
Seth Diamond @ Feb 27th 2008 4:44PM
I haven't noticed any PQ difference in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. I've also noticed none of the new channels are on my 8300HD yet.
Carlyle @ Feb 26th 2008 9:09AM
I have the same old HD channels as of today. I read that some of you could actually see these new "channels" listed in the guide. I haven't. I live in Flushing and I have Explorer 3250 HD. Do I have to reboot the box or call TWC? Any comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
mike @ Feb 27th 2008 4:54PM
no new channels
Austin @ Feb 27th 2008 11:08PM
Damn.. Well screw me.
My PQ is noticably worse.. some channels are worse than others.. some are just piss poor. Macroblocking and artifacts like a mo'fo. Grr.. calling TWC to complain..
RobNYC @ Feb 28th 2008 2:33PM
I'm in Boerum Hill Brooklyn and as of earlier this week they weren't showing up on my cable box. I forget which one I have (I think an Explorer box) but it's def not the type in the picture, it's the Passport one. Has anyone from around my area gotten these yet?
As for any loss in picture quality, I really haven't noticed. I always though specific channels looked better than others anyway. HBO's HD feed I never thought was that great to begin with if you compare it to the stuff on HD Theater and MOJO.
Carlyle @ Mar 5th 2008 1:09PM
I live in a 198 unit co-op in Flushing. We are tired of Time Warner and really don't care about its problems. As the board president, I authorized the building of a mdu commercial system for Direct TV last year. In about two more months, we'll have both cable and satellite. We estimated more than 100 units will switch to Direct TV. Also working with other buildings to do the same. Time Warner doesn't care? We'll let them lose this neighborhood.
Drew @ Mar 10th 2008 3:20PM
More lies from Time Warner. They release this B.S. and Engadget prints it. Then they stall til the hype dies and NOTHING happens!
STILL no changes in HD offerings in Queens since TBS was added last fall! Stop lying to us and saying these channels are coming if they aren't!
chris @ Mar 11th 2008 7:29PM
Has anyones TWC Samsung HD reciever HDMI output stopped showing SD shows at "Full" screen? Ever since the recent software update I only get SD shows with side bars unless I use composite AV cables, but then I cant view HD. I am not the only one in my area to be effected by this.
