Why "caveat emptor"? Do you even know what that phrase means? They're merely placing the focus on a function of a player that is now most likely to get it off the shelves. Nothing wrong with that, and there's nothing to "beware". We HD DVD early adopters have been saying since the $98 Wal-Mart fire sale that even if HD DVD died one big reason to keep our players is that it would still be an excellent upconverter -- and it is!

So, now the HD DVD format is at the funeral home awaiting burial at the end of March, but the player is still exactly what they said it is. My $2000 HDTV up-converts any signal to it's native resolution just fine, I don't need a $90 DVD player from walmart or even a $300 one from Amazon to do it. In fact, there have been a few times where I wondered why the "upscaled" picture looked so blocky only to look down at the player display and see that it was still in 480p mode. After switching it to 1080i (or 1080p with my previous upscaler) the blockiness of the picture was gone. It was a very smooth picture after that. The TV also responds to the resolution change. It does a 1-to-2 second switchover whenever resolution modes change, and it most certainly does that whenever I activate the upscaling.

So don't tell me that it's all a big scam. And my $150 Oppo (Model 970) DVD player is one of the 10 Million plus sold during that time period. Even now with Warner Brothers decision to end the format war AFTER Christmas, milking unsuspecting customers out of millions of dollars in HD DVD software sales, Blu-Ray player sales will be stagnant as most people just do not want to pay $400+ for a Blu-Ray player at Best Buy. Get some of the prices under $200 and a somewhat significant number of folks will start to get interested. Get the prices under $100 and you will see real mass market consumer adoption. Until then PS3 gamers and "free" Blu-Ray player bundles (with 1080p HDTV purchases from Panasonic, Sony, Sharp, and/or Samsung) will be the primary driver of Blu-Ray "sales." Don't forget that people are still buying tons of DVD's, too. 2007 DVD sales were slightly down (approximately a 5% drop) from 2006, but these sales for the studios are still tens of billions of dollars compared to a few hundred million for high-definition video disc sales. I wouldn't be surprised if the American Gangster HD DVD Combo DVD sells fairly well on the dead HD DVD format because it is still a DVD that will be playable on Blu-Ray players in the future, and HD DVD players are now available for under $100 (and DVD players still sell by the boatload if they are priced under $100 as I already suggested earlier). The backwards incompatibility is going to be a sticking point for Blu-Ray going forward. The HD DVD Combo DVD could have overcome this obstacle with aplomb. My guess is Blu-Ray will try to handle this with some type of digital copy being put on Blu-Ray discs, much like is starting to be done with a select few DVD's now (i.e. Die Hard With a Vengeance). Going forward it's probably going to be easier for people who want to own a Blu-Ray disc (but want to have SDVD for their own personal use) to just become criminals and rent the DVD and burn it to a DVD-R.

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/cemadvdsales.html

Leonardo DiCrapio

Comments on HD DVD players become DVD upscalers in format war fallout

The last time I checked, every single Blu Ray player is backwards compatible and plays DVDs. So I don't quite follow why you think people will continue to buy DVD players. If early adopters were so tightfisted that $100 was all they'd pay for a player then HD DVD would have won already. What actually happened is that BD players selling at their true cost (ie. not subsidized) still outsold HD DVD by a large margin.

Sales of Blu Ray are likely to accelerate. People buying HD sets, or who own HD sets, or even people with SD sets shopping for a new player will start buying Blu Ray players instead of DVD players. More so as the price sinks as more as it goes mainstream and more players appear from manufacturers. There will be a good selection of players for less than $300 before the year out, possibly some for less than $200.

It's a no brainer for anyone going HD to choose Blu Ray. Their DVDs will play great, better than a regular SD player. And with the move to Blu Ray consumers will start buying Blu Ray discs as a matter of course.

Combo disks are also a total waste of time when there is only a single HD format remaining. I can understand why consumers might like combo disks on HD DVD. It was like having an emergency parachute in case the format flopped. As indeed it did. There is little point in combo disks for Blu Ray now that it has already won.

As for electronic copies, there is something called mandatory managed copy on discs. No player supports this yet though the PS3 is supposed to at some point. It will allow you to take a copy of the movie for playback on a portable device. The PS3 will support the PSP and I expect other manufacturers will offer similar functionality. Maybe it requires profile 2.0 which is why we haven't seen it offered yet.

DrXym

Comments on HD DVD players become DVD upscalers in format war fallout

Stand-alone Blu-Ray players did not outsell stand-alone HD DVD players! Sony integrated Blu-Ray playback into the Playstation 3, which along with the Warner move decided the "format war." There was roughly one Blu-Ray movie disc sold and/or given away (i.e. Open Season Blu-Rays given away with PS3's during one particular sale at Best Buy) per PS3 sold. And the PS3 was subsidized -- it had to be to be even mildly competitive with the PS3 and Wii. "If you can afford an HDTV, you can afford a BD player." Will you people just STOP IT!?

It all comes down to VALUE -- how much value we perceive the purchase will be. For many of us (I would even guess "most of us") who have HD DVD players, the only reason why we have them is because we got them at the $98 Wal-Mart fire sale. Otherwise, we would most likely have stuck with upconverting DVD and/or HD over cable or satellite. Enough anti-HD DVD stories already. If people continue to buy the players to use as upscalers (so NOT a scam, either; some TVs suck at upscaling, I know mine does :->) that's their business, and we don't need amateur journalists to "save" us from our "idiocy."

I'm with JohnB. I bought an HD DVD player because it was cheap, it lost, boo hoo, I would have preferred it if it had won, and while I do hold something against WB for their timing, it's out of my hands and if I want high-def movies on a shiny disc it'll have to be on Blu-Ray so I think I'll be looking for a Blu-Ray player. Eventually.

And yes, it's infuriating going to consumer entertainment sites and be barraged with reminders of my apparent idiocy for getting a decent deal on a really awesome upscaler instead of spending more on a Blu-Ray player. Hey, better machines will come out soon, and there's going to be a drought of good new releases this year, so what's the rush? I have no moral obligation to keep any CE manufacturer or movie studio's profits from sagging, and neither do you. If you're going Blu right away, already have, or were Blu-only all along, and you're happy with that decision, then great! I'm glad you're fine with that. As for me, I'm waiting. When I'm plopped on my couch watching DVDs on my TV, it looks pretty darn good, and I can live with that. Hey, my generation thought the Atari 2600 was effin' awesome, so I think I can wait a few months for more high-def movies :->

I'm not sure at this point if I'll be buying clearance HD DVDs. Maybe. I have most of what I wanted anyway, and will get a couple more titles soon. And I'm in no rush to get Blu until more Profile 2.0 players come out and the competition gets fierce between BDA members, and more big-name titles like LoTR and Star Wars are out. (Good thing for the CE business that most movie-watchers didn't wait for DVD until Star Wars and Indiana Jones were on DVD, eh? ;-)

regeya

Comments on HD DVD players become DVD upscalers in format war fallout

@JohnB

Fair enough. You're just flat out making up things and obsessing over Blu owners gritting their teeth. I'm not disagreeing with you because I stand on the opposite side of the fence and as much as you call me a Blu cheerleader, I just can't deal with your comments that have no facts behind them and that's what pisses me off about your posts. You keep saying gritting teeth when at the end of the day, any movie a Blu owner buys will play on all flavors of Blu drives regardless of any future changes to the profile standard. I like most others will eventually have multiple players in the home and just like DVD, some will have more features than others and I'm not the kind of person who's going to cry that an older player of mine can't access a feature on a Blu disc that has no barring on watching the actual movie.
Again, I don't like what your saying not because I'm right and your wrong but because you're not making any points based on facts.
You're opinion is just a blind rant and in some cases, fortune telling which is why I don't consider it an opinion. If you said HD-DVD was almost the same technically(I'm talking about specifications) as Blu but due to price differences you like HD-DVD better, I could respect that even thought I'd rather spend more to get something that is technically better.
If HD-DVD had won, all of your arguments about Blu still failing after the format war was over would apply to HD-DVD and since Blu was adopted by more consumers, Blu has a better chance at dethroning DVD than HD-DVD had. So why does VOD, PVR and Digital Downloads sound good all of a sudden that your preferred format lost and why does Blu have to fail because HD-DVD lost?
I understand that many people as early adopters were bound to lose out on their investment when 1 format defeated the other and I get that even though we all new the risks, it still burns to face the fact that being on the losing side means that the HD player that lost is now a great upsampling player and that there's a very limited library of titles available for it's HD format playback, not to mention that the HD only disc won't play in the winning HD formats player unless you spend a fortune on a dual format player.
Someone had to lose or else no HD format disc would have been accepted by the general public and I'm happy 1 did, even if it had went the other way, I'd still be happy that at least I can buy an HD disc with confidence now.
The above is why none of your comments make sense and they're hypocritical so PLEASE give it a rest.

XDragon

Comments on HD DVD players become DVD upscalers in format war fallout

No you go fuck yourself; I wipe my ass with product that's more valuable than anything you can contribute.
I'm not a cheerleader but I am realistic.
The majority of consumers decided they prefer Blu and sales prove that.
Toshiba gave up so now you can shut the fuck up!
Ever experience voting on anything when the majority decides the outcome? This is no different so you can bitch all you want while i enjoy 1 hd format that will be successful now due to the format war being over..and I won't be gritting my teeth at all because I didn't lose any money or anything by this.
So far DVD owner have been getting the shaft because they re-release a movie many times and at least no HD format has done that YET so keep making up shit to make yourself feel better.
Why couldn't your dad have stuck it in your mom's ass the dreadful day you were made? The world is a more stupid place because of you and everyone voting down all your posts and evlevating anyone who fights you should be proof enough that you're not welcome here.

XDragon

Comments on HD DVD players become DVD upscalers in format war fallout

tho a bit caustic, I whole-heartedly endorse XDragon's motion to ban TT's account and IP address from all flavors of Engadget.
