Amazon officially makes Blu-ray format of choice
No surprises here, but apparently Amazon is staying on top of the format war happenings in an attempt to clarify the issue for potential HDM customers. According to a recent blog posting on the site, Blu-ray is dubbed "the remaining high-definition disc format," and it also noted that consumers that have "been waiting to jump into high-def have a clear path to follow." According to Peter Faricy, vice president of movies and music at Amazon, the firm is now "recommending Blu-ray as the preferred digital format," and it fully expects to update its High-Def 101 page accordingly over the next few days.

"From now on, me and Silent Bob are standing outside of the Quicker Stop. Officially."
Sorry... I see "officially" and I just think of the Clerks animated series...

Next Engadget headline: Dog Bites Man!

Can we just go ahead and assume every other remaining retailer has done the same thing and not post obvious information.
phatbuddha @ Feb 21st 2008 10:00AM
Agreed. I mean c'mon. It's a little late to be announcing that you are going exclusively BD if the competition has quit the game. Now if they announce that they are going to continue to sell HD DVD or even switch to it exclusively....now that would be news worthy. Idiotic, but news worthy nonetheless.

JVirg1 @ Feb 21st 2008 9:25AM
Your mail got delivered? Dang, you have a better mailman than me. Mine always gets delivered just not to me.

Its because I leave him cookies! With blu sprinkles!
Quick, someone make a giant blu-cake so engadget can report on it.
Engadget feels like that Simpsons episode where Moe steals the recipe for the "flamin Homer"...
Dad, can we blu some blu before we blu over to blu. blu blu blu blu, blu blu, blu blu blu blu. blu blu, blu blu blu blu. blu. blu blu blu.

I just checked Amazon's site. Yesterday they had a number of HD DVD titles prominently displayed at the top of their "Movies & TV" page. Now it's DVDs at the top, with Blu-ray immediately below. The only mention of HD DVD is down near the bottom at the "HD DVD store" section.
DrXym @ Feb 21st 2008 10:24AM
I didn't notice much of a difference when I visited today (without being logged in) except for a message that says "Toshiba Discontinues HD DVD Players
Toshiba has announced that it will discontinue its HD DVD players. Future availability of HD DVD discs is unknown. Read our blog post for more details and news links, visit our Blu-ray Store to learn about the other high-def disc format and see our latest offers in our High-Def Deals Store.".
I expect they'll soon bury HD DVD somewhere less prominent and change any wording that indicates there are two competing technologies any more.
TrentD @ Feb 21st 2008 10:39AM
Shocking.
Now where are the buy one, get five free sales on HD DVD, Amazon? I need to assuage my grief by surrounding myself with heavily discounted HD DVDs!
hemmy @ Feb 21st 2008 12:43PM
I think this could be a problem for HD DVD.
Mr. E @ Feb 21st 2008 1:31PM
To coin a completely unique phrase, it could be the final nail in the coffin!
HDpurist @ Feb 22nd 2008 1:43AM
Actually, there's no more room for more nails. To coin a phrase, bring on the scotch tape!!!
GatoFrio @ Feb 21st 2008 2:22PM
Hmmm... Sounds like a marketing campaign for an acronym change may be needed:
HD-DVD - Hugely Dead-DVD
It's certainly nice to see Toshiba gracefully bowing out now and others quickly following suit to end the format confusion. Even with Blu-Ray region coding and higher cost at the moment, it's nice to be able to commit one way or another and be able to make format recommendations to others who don't understand this whole mess as well as the people on this site do.
LiqwidZero @ Feb 21st 2008 3:29PM
I just put Sweeney Todd,Into The Wild, Bee Movie, The Kite Runner, and There Will Be Blood all on pre-order from Amazon. And Cloverfield has been announced today for a day-to-date release on April 22nd.
What's going on, now?
HDpurist @ Feb 22nd 2008 1:35AM
HD-DVD is one of the worst failures in the history of storage medium. Betamax had a life term of 27 years. HD-DVD, not even a full 2 years.
OUCH. All you HD-DVD shills have good reason to be bitter and pissed for shelling out your hard earned cash all for nothing but down the toilet crapper. Universal and Paramount must totally feel embarassed for soley supporting such a huge business failure. Overall all, this whole format war was fark'n hilarious...glad I supported Blu-ray from day 1 and had full confidence in them winning. For the HD-DVD supporters, remember, a sucker is born every minute.
