DirecTV offering interactive, multi-screen HD coverage of Masters Tournament
DirecTV is most definitely going out of its way to appease consumers this month, as shortly after announcing exclusive HD coverage of the South by Southwest Festival, it's now making every golf fan not on DTV incredibly envious. During this year's Masters Tournament, set to open on April 10th, DTV subscribers will have access to an SD and HD Masters Mix Channel which will provide four windows of viewing. Aside from providing a look at CBS / ESPN's live coverage in View One, users will also see a highlight window with continuously updated material including voice-over commentary. View Three provides a look at "Amen Corner" -- holes 11, 12 and 13 -- while View Four showcases the notoriously difficult holes 15 and 16. Better still, each of the bonus channels will sport its own production crew and announcers, and a special recap show will also air on DTV's own The 101. You know that pricey ticket to Augusta you've been eying? Skip it.

Now that is good use of technology IMO and i'd love it if they did this with football! I love to control the camera since i'm more of a fan of a behind the quarterback view so that I can see the pocket collapse and the recievers routes from a much better perspective IMO.

Yep, I detest Fox's penchant for zooming in on the quarterback as he's calling out signals before the snap-- that doesn't show us anything. I want to see what the defense is doing-- how are the defensive backs adjusting-- are the moving in to press? pulling back? Where's the safties? Just let me control the shot I want to see, and leave the shots of the QB's pores to someone who likes pores.
And don't get me started on Fox's cruddy baseball coverage.

This is awesome. I am excited to say the very least. Having said that, why does Directv not use the whole screen. Look at the screen shot above, there is plenty of space at the edges, top and bottom. I'd rather they increase the screen sizes rather than add all of the pretty imagagry in the background.

Is there any word on whether this will be streamed in mpeg 4 or mpeg 2? the only reason I ask is because my present system doesn't accomodate mpeg 2. I will be upgrading in May, a full 2 months after the Masters. Oh cruel irony.

@Michael - Just a warning to you... after install, make sure you call customer service to find out how much your bill will be. When I signed up for DirectTV last month, the rep told me it would $45/month... the first bill came and it was nearly double that. I cancelled the service because I was mislead on the pricing (after 13 days of having the service - the day I got my first bill) and they charged me a $480 cancellation fee. BEWARE. Absolutely disgusting experience.
