In an apparent
attempt to fend off
competition from Verizon, Cox Communications has just announced its intentions to upgrade the fiber optic network in and around the Hampton, Virginia area. If you'll
recall, the company already upgraded its network in Newport News and began deploying switched digital video in certain locales, but this latest initiative will reportedly provide "additional capacity to expand its digital television programming" and boost internet speeds in Hampton. For subscribers that may see brief outages as the work takes place, you'll reportedly be notified two days prior -- you know, so you can mentally prepare for living sans cable for a few moments that afternoon.

I'm in Chesapeake, VA and they just started the upgrades in my neighborhood too. We got a letter a few weeks ago and a flier on the door handle a couple days ago. I had no clue they added more HD channels today. I knew it was taking me longer than usual to scroll through my 700s.

This would serious hinder Uverse as its competitive advantage is the fiber-optic network that, according to the rep, allows true 1080i HD, not just 720p.
Enhancing internet speed would simply seal the deal. Nice move! Now market it right and bring to Oklahoma!

Hampton? Newport News? How about giving Norfolk,Va an upgrade. I currently have 15mbps/2mbps from Cox. Some improved upload speeds would be nice too! Once FIOS migrates from Va. Beach and Chesapeake to my location I will not hesitate to switch. Its weird these two cities have lower than usual urban areas and are huge! Im not sure why they choose these locations.

I hear ya, I live in Norfolk as well. I didn't even know that Cox had FiOS to Chesapeake and Va Beach. Where is the love for Norfolk?

Norfolk residents are next. There are so many more people per square mile, Norfolk is alot more work.

Well I'm just glad I moved from there, I lived in virginia beach and we didn't get VOD till 2005 and untill the summer of 07 we only had one local in HD and a hand full of HD channels on cable, not even all the premiums were HD! It's amazing what a little competition will do.

Cox started an upgrade to fiber-optic in Hampton, VA Monday 7 April 2008, and instead of coming back up in a few hours like they said, it has been down for nearly 2 days now.
Basically they botched the whole thing just like they did in Williamsburg.
The other interesting thing is for nearly 2 years they have been advertising that they had an all optical network.
Ha ha ha ha...
Man, these people stuck.
Call them up: "We are sorry, but we have no idea when we will be able to restore network service."
No idea?
