Onkyo pulling the plug on future HD DVD development
The writing was already on the wall, but it looks as if Onkyo actually won't be pursuing the long lost HD DVD format any longer. According to a Japanese report at Yomiuri Online, the firm will be discontinuing production of HD DVD players following Toshiba's own decision to abandon the format, but it will continue to provide service for customers that already snapped up the DV-HD805. Interestingly, there was no mention of Onkyo's plans in regard to Blu-ray, but nevertheless, yet another red supporter has definitely waved its white flag.

I assume Onkyo is buying their parts from Toshiba? Kinda hard to make a player for a 'dead' format when nobody makes the parts!

Onkyo never did anything with HDDVD.Onkyo's player like the RCA or Venturer was a remanufactured Toshiba.Onkyo/Integera released a handfull of units before quitting.I really dont see why they would do a BD player either, Onkyo/Integera makes audio gear. Their recievers trounce the competition at every pricepoint.

This is just a diversion from Toshiba to you stupid Blu boys, I have an inside source that knows an Inside source that says Onkyo is going to release a sub $50 HDDVD player with 20 free HDDVD's and inside there are free coupons for a 6 piece chicken bucket at Popeyes. Toshiba has all but given up on HDDVD, LOL stupid Blu Boys!

What do you expect? This site is the "Entertainment Tonight" of the tech world, only with slightly less gay reporters.

final nail?
DrXym @ Feb 20th 2008 4:52AM
I'm surprised Onkyo persisted. How did they hope to make money when Toshiba was so desperate to push the format that they were even undercutting no-name Chinese players?
SamiSin @ Feb 20th 2008 5:52AM
WHAT? You got to be joking? Is HD DVD dead???
