I don't care if Universal and Paramount start making BD discs, I just hope they release some new ones on HD DVD for a while to pick up. Looks like American Gangster may be the last title we get worth buying.

I'm not too upset about the demise in the end, I got a 98 dollar player and some good deals on HD DVDs, knowing that there was a strong possibility they would lose.

I hope for a Toshiba BD player or dual format player. If that doesn't happen maybe a BD add-on for the 360. This of course would have suckered hundreds more people into spending their m oney on a format that even toshiba knew was dead. It is reported that Wal-Mart didn't like the idea of it and decided to announce their intentions in order to force toshibas hand.

Doesn't help your particular case, but it is nice to see that even Wal-Mart wanted to end this promptly, and didn't want to screw consumers over any more than already done. I also want to note for all the folks who have been spewing the "sony wants to screw over the wold and toshiba is Abraham Lincoln" crap. They were planning on dragging a lot more people down with them.

Hopefully they'll give you guys a credit on a BD player when they have one to bring to market. Living in Norway, articles about cable, satellite and VOD offerings in HD have no relevance to me (wish it did). Watched Superbowl in SD through internet compliments of SlingBox -- that's about as hight-tech a TV-offering I have used so far. hope to do the same for the Oscars (another all-nighter local time).

EngadgetHD won't be quite as fun now that the smelling remains of HD DVD is being dug down in Toshibas back yard. I will miss the war and the evangelists postings.

But with any luck, the Blu vs. DVD sales numbers will start to get interesting by year end. My 2.500+ DVD-collection is growing at snail-pace and have done so ever since i decided to go for Blu-Ray 8 months ago. DVD will still be alive and doing well long after the memory of HD DVD have faded away, but i do think that in 12 - 15 months the big 7 will start to push Blu harder by having HD-exclusive titles and/or having delayed release dates for SD DVD on certain big titles.

The combo-players looks to have gone the way of HD DVD, judging by industry buzz these last few days. And now that the war is over, I think the industry will try to force a move over from HD DVD to Blu-Ray for as many of the early adopters that bet on the wrong horse as possible. That means no more HD DVD movie releases. At all. A clean cut. The message needs to be that there only one HD format. And that message needs to be crystal clear.

Hans Martin

Comments on Does everyone know the war is officially over but us?

Here is the outcome I would like to see. Paramount and Universal are free to release on both formats. Toshiba continues to support HD DVD, as the install base grows and more money is to be made on the format, other studios should be given incentives to also produce titles on HD DVD. I do not believe holding studios hostage is the right way to do business for either format. Ultimately it destroys customer choice. However, to turn the back on an install base of 1,000,000 user is ludicrous. There's no point in continuing with both formats, since that's just going to stop any hope of mass adoption. Now that retailers have picked Blu-ray, there is no viable mass market retail channel for HD DVD. Backs are not being turned, it's just economic reality.

Sorry, but this is the end for the format, whether Toshiba continues to support HD DVD or not.
