Laserdiscs were produced between 1978 and 2001. So why would Toshiba throw in the towel after less than 2 years on a million users? It doesn't make sense.

I think that is because Laserdisc didnt directly compete with VHS is was more of an alternative to it. And I think Laserdisc had support from all Studios.
Blu-ray and HD-DVD are too similar and maybe that is the reason. Its hard to get new customers interested in HD already, having these two formats made it harder to market maybe?
Kind of related maybe but in Japan, people probably dont know what hd-dvd is. They may think it is hdd(hard disc drive recorder). Toshiba sometimes market their player as an "hdd hd-dvd" player and when I see that advertisement I think people must not know what the hell that is.
Anyway, I wish it would have continue a bit longer, I enjoyed the bogo sales from both formats.

Beta recorders and devices were common place in television newsrooms, as well the beta cam had been used to make tv commercials and television shows, etc. They had a usefulness that superseded the joe average consumer. That would be why they lasted up until 2002. HD DVD discs not so useful, laser disc pretty much the same.
