When it came down to sheer shelf space, BD had much more to work with. Not to mention all the deals over Christmas where you got a free BD player with a lot of Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, and Samsung TVs. There were HD-DVD promos like that for Tosh's TVs too, but they're only one brand (that isn't even carried at some regional retailers across North America).

Regardless of which format was better, the weight of the Blu-ray heavy hitters combined made HD-DVD severely outgunned. The developments of the past month or so just made things happen much more rapidly than I think anyone had anticipated, but the ultimate result would have been the same.

In the light of this it's amazing they shifted 1 million+ HD DVD players at all - and Blu-ray standalone/PS3 sales end up looking even more pathetic given this truth about the biased BD sales cheer-leaders.

This ought to be investigated; talk about anti-consumer & anti-competitive practices.

The industry has merely ended up with the 'security' & DRM-ridden monstrosity their instincts have told them to back to try and effect a 'King Canute' act against sharing and fair use.

We've already seen how effective a block on sales that has been in the music world.
Movies won't be too far behind now.

Meanwhile they have so obviously attempted to deliberately mislead the consumer into thinking Blu-ray is just going to be like a 'better bigger DVD'.
They rigged the market & lied and the lie will soon be found out.
Consumers usually don't like that kind of thing.

Between the greed of the industry (both CE corps & movie) and their innate blind stupidity (people will not just give up DVD for the pricey & more limited BD format - there will be no equivalent 'Divx/Xvid' to BD) all they have done is ensure HDMs on disc are stuck in the PS3 niche.

But it doesn't really matter in the end, they have backed the wrong horse.
Blu-ray cannot slide in easily to be 'the next DVD' as HD DVD might have done.
They can never have the Twin disc or combo disc (ironically they don't have the rights to use DVD like that, even tho it would be easily done from a technical POV).
'They knew what they were getting into' is the appropriate phrase, I believe.

HD TV services with DVRs are going to be the big deal this time around.
They are being sold with almost every HD TV in the UK and I have no doubt something similar is going on in most places.
'HD on your HD TV all the time' so obviously beats any occasional expensive BD disc on an expensive BD player
(not that they even have a range of supposedly final spec players out yet).

They may have seen HD DVD fall out of this race but Blu-ray is nowhere near being 'the next DVD'.

The truth is they did rig the market as this report shows clearly (you not get numbers like that from mere chance).

....and where do you get this idea that downloads are in any way inferior?

I can choose a (very nice) re-encoded rip or a straight rip
(of all buit a small handful of the Blu-ray releases - tho of course as the greedy b@st@rds go for BD+ more and more that will dry up).
You're (as usual) plain wrong and doing anything to try and evangelise for your beloved video format (& more to the real point game console).

Unfortunately for you Blu-ray is not catching on anywhere......except amongst a minority of the game console kiddies and the handful of a/v enthusiasts who bought one.
