If you were trying to sell something and the customer had a choice of a couple different units each from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Philips, Sharp, Hitachi, and Pioneer, or 2 or 3 models from Toshiba, which are they more likely to buy? Oh, and throw the PS3 in there too.

When it came down to sheer shelf space, BD had much more to work with. Not to mention all the deals over Christmas where you got a free BD player with a lot of Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, and Samsung TVs. There were HD-DVD promos like that for Tosh's TVs too, but they're only one brand (that isn't even carried at some regional retailers across North America).

Regardless of which format was better, the weight of the Blu-ray heavy hitters combined made HD-DVD severely outgunned. The developments of the past month or so just made things happen much more rapidly than I think anyone had anticipated, but the ultimate result would have been the same.

As Sony has learned time and time again, you can't try and ignore where the rest of the industry is going, and that's exactly what Toshiba tried to do.

eddie_nutritious

Comments on J.D. They had more at stake (PS3)than Toshiba. Having the blu-ray built-in would not be worth the manufacturing cost of the PS3 if blu-ray lost. They would not have been able to remove the blu-ray from the PS3 since games are made with blu-ray discs from day one. The PS3 has been known to lose hardware/functionality to get its cost down. Sony also has lost a big chunk of the gaming market share (to Wii and Xbox 360) since the days of PS2 dominance.

rg23

Comments on J.D. According to NPD Blu Ray players are 4 or 5 times more profitable for retailers than HD DVD. And they weren't returned in droves in January due to the Warner news. People who think Blu Ray is SO anti consumer just make me laugh. When they start their competition with DVD all they have to do is finish the spec, which is done in reality, and start lowering prices. DVD was much more expensive than VHS at the time. They didn't have any combo VHS/DVD movies. It's ridiculous to draw these conclusions when in reality, aside from price, the two formats were identical. Toshiba did a shitty job marketing their product, don't be pissed at blu ray for that. Why do you care. Have fun downloading your lower quality movies. All these people on here that think they're going to spite blu ray by not buying them are just pathetic. I don't think the BDA is really concerned that you're gonna start downloading your movies because they beat up your best friend HD DVD at school yesterday.

Truth TeIIer

Comments on J.D.
