One advantage Blu Ray has over DVD is that it's backwards compatible. When it was DVD vs VHS you basically had to toss away your old collection since you can't play a video cassette on a DVD player (except combo players). Every Blu Ray player sold so far offers backwards compatibility. I say so far because its not a mandatory requirement but manufacturers would have to be out of their heads not to offer DVD playback.
