Wal-Mart to officially discontinue HD DVD sales by June
With HD DVD, things are just going from bad, to really bad, to worse, to car-crash-you-can't-stop-looking-at. You can file this one under that latter category, as Wal-Mart has officially announced its intentions to stop stocking HD DVD players and movies by June. According to reports, the retailer came to the decision after Netflix and Best Buy made announcements concerning their position in the HD format war. Susan Chronister of Wal-Mart wrote on the company's blog, "By June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard-def movies, DVD players, and up-convert players." Susan went on to deliver what we consider a total burn by adding, "if you bought the HD [DVD] player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard-def movies, and make space for a BD player." Look, we're not gonna say that this is it for HD DVD, but... uh, it doesn't look real great.

Now this is the beginning of the end.
DrXym @ Feb 15th 2008 11:59AM
I wonder what amusing idiocy Nfinity and Truth Teller have spouted about Walmart in the past. About how it was going to win the war for HD DVD, how cheap HD DVD players would turn everything around etc.
I guess Nfinity will just have to fold Walmart into his fantasy "paid off" conspiracy which must include most of America at this point.
MI @ Feb 15th 2008 12:19PM
Um, I think this is pretty much the end of the end!
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Feb 15th 2008 12:59PM
This is basically a paste of a previous post I made earlier. I am too lazy to come up with something new to post. I do however, wonder if Nfinity and TT and pals will say Wallmart does not matter. Please Toshiba....just GIVE UP so we can go after DVD put Chumpvision players out to pasture right next to HD_DEAD.
I have been reading the Tree Stooges posts for a better part of a year now. I only recently started posting though. TT and Nfinity bring a smile to my face with every post they make.
Please for the love of the FSM DO NOT STOP! You guys crack me up and this sites posts would be pretty boring if it were not for TT, Nfinity and HD something I cannot remember his name.
I LOVE trolls on every site I go to, it makes things fun and more entertaining for me...especially at work. I do not understand why some sites "get off" on banning people left and right (Kotaku) over some silly BANTER. R we not adults here? Can we not take other peoples words with a grain of salt instead of getting our panties in a bunch?
When Toshiba throws in the towel (yeah thats right I said WHEN) on HD_DEAD, I think it would be a nice gesture to either give discounts on HD_DEAD trade-ins and/or make thier 1st Blu-ray players combo players.
I know Toshiba is bleeding money everyday and that they cannot continue in this much longer. I know that giving these discounts or trade-ins will rape thier treasury even more....but it would go a long way in showing that they give a shit about the 1 million early adopters that supported them.
Who knows what they will do, I only hope that they do it quickly so that I can see the BIG GUNS release on Blu.
See? This post was boring...more banter please.
Ha HAH HD_DEAD'ers...you picked the WRONG format and you have lost $$$!!! I picked the right one and yooouuuu dident.
okeygrak @ Feb 15th 2008 11:47AM
Seriously, What's next?
Con-Edison and PSEG decide to stop allowing HD-DVD players to pull power off the grid?
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 15th 2008 11:55AM
LOL.
chav3z @ Feb 15th 2008 11:47AM
wow, someone's great with photoshop...did you get this one from blu-ray?
Chris @ Feb 15th 2008 11:52AM
Someone's bitter...
Felix @ Feb 15th 2008 11:50AM
One by one, HD DVD support is gone, Blu-ray has no gain, but it gains something important: exclusivity.
Long Live BD
Toshiba's PR: they will use the usual template and just put "Walmart" in it.
DrXym @ Feb 15th 2008 11:53AM
Penton-Man was bang on the money again. So long and thanks for all the fish.
Anthony Pivac @ Feb 15th 2008 11:53AM
But, wait. Isn't Toshiba claiming that HD DVD is ok for upconversion. So in theory they should still be socking the players. LOL.
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 15th 2008 11:54AM
PWNED....... again for the 37th time this week alone.
zargon @ Feb 15th 2008 12:04PM
Trolling for the 37th this time this week...
I can't wait for this war to be over if not for anything to else, to get rid of all the Blu-ray trolls and Truth Teller and company.
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 15th 2008 12:13PM
@ ZARGON
Touche... but what the hell else is there to do on ENGADGET HD format war posts? It's been a death watch since the Warner announcement.
bizdady @ Feb 15th 2008 11:55AM
What happened to that stalement from the previous story?? lol
Dave @ Feb 15th 2008 11:55AM
Yeah!

Anthony Pivac @ Feb 15th 2008 11:57AM
Universal & Paramount/Dreamworks are you paying attention yet. Expect other retailers to follow suit. It only takes one to start the chain reaction.
bizdady @ Feb 15th 2008 11:58AM
errrrr meant to write stalemate lol
Sam Winter @ Feb 15th 2008 10:45PM
"stalemate statement"
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 15th 2008 11:58AM
OK, I hate to say it, but I TOLD YOU SO!!!
As I've been saying for weeks now, since the hold out studios sat on their asses about going Blu, the retailers stepped in and finished this stupid war.
xolan99 @ Feb 15th 2008 12:02PM
Cue Nfinity and Truth Teller:
"Bwhahahaha...this means nothing considering Big Lots STILL HAVE HD DVD!! The war isn't over!"
MI @ Feb 15th 2008 12:22PM
Hey, I LOVE Big Lots!!
TrentD @ Feb 15th 2008 12:52PM
How clever and original.
buffcorp @ Feb 15th 2008 12:05PM
Phew thank god I never bought one of them...guess wait for a PS3 pricedrop and I will snag myself a bluray player :)

Jerry @ Feb 15th 2008 12:05PM
Well, I'm not investing in Blu-Ray no matter what. It's an inferior format...I'll just finally hook my Media Center PC to my TV and enjoy all my HD Downloads and HD VoD. No one is a winner here.
Mitch @ Feb 15th 2008 12:12PM
Inferior to what? Hmm, more capacity than HD DVD, more studio support, more pc drives/burners. Yeah, that's really inferior, just like DVDs are inferior to Laserdisc. Those high quality HD downloads and HD VoD sure have better quality don't they?
Hans Martin @ Feb 15th 2008 12:06PM
Dam Walmart! and just before the influx of Chinese HD DVD-players would turn this whole thing around!
ProfWho @ Feb 15th 2008 12:06PM
Game over man!
Game over!
This is the end.
Nfinity and Truth teller please spin this.
MI @ Feb 15th 2008 12:17PM
The Official NFinity / Truth Teller impersonation thread!! I'll start us off...
---
She said that they would continue to sell up-converting DVD players. Everybody but the game console poopy head BD kiddies know that the A30 is the best up-converting DVD Player. She's secretly telling us all that WalMart is REALLY going to be supporting HDVD exclusively! It's pathetic that all you stupid ps3 kiddie booger poop people can't see that!
---
"Mock On!"
ProfWho @ Feb 15th 2008 12:19PM
Nfinity
This is just another Sony dirty trick. They just paid off Walmart. You will see next month HD-DVD is going to have a huge comeback. Amazon is so much bigger than Walmart.
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 15th 2008 12:57PM
"Brick and Mortar stores don't matter. Only Amazon. LMAO"
- Truth Teller.
Zodiac @ Feb 15th 2008 12:10PM
There are more nails than wood on this coffin.
Felix @ Feb 15th 2008 12:14PM
it started to runs out of space for new nails
Mitch @ Feb 15th 2008 12:28PM
I think there's room for 2 more nails, the remaining studios will finally seal the deal.
nin @ Feb 15th 2008 1:01PM
We should stop nailing the coffin.
Maybe just another brick in the wall (of the HD-DVD mausoleum)?
Mojo_Yugen @ Feb 15th 2008 2:31PM
They actually just took the old coffin and dropped it into a brand new coffin to make room for more nails.
Richard @ Feb 15th 2008 12:12PM
Hah, but what about HD-DVD's big comeback and excellent sales? LMAO!
Truth Teller @ Feb 15th 2008 12:13PM
Well as usual a blog (or similar) gets elevated to a position of Holy Gospel.
Hilarious.
Naturally none of the Blu-ray fanboys want to actually look at what was said.
She says Walmart will continue to stock "upconverting DVD players".
Which, interestingly enough, is exactly the line Toshiba have been taking recently.
Anyhoo, carry on pulling each other off pretending HD DVD has gone away......
ProfWho @ Feb 15th 2008 12:17PM
Is the the best you can do. The said they are not selling HD-DVD players not that they will be rebranding HD-DVD players are upconverting DVD players. They are also not stocking HD-DVD movies.
It is over.
Now move out of your mother's basement and get a girlfriend.
MI @ Feb 15th 2008 12:18PM
HA!!! See, told ya!

It's Official! GET OVER IT!
Geoffrey Sperl @ Feb 15th 2008 12:36PM
Some of us think a "holy gospel" has just as much merit as a blog, so that dig holds very little water with those of us who don't believe in what we consider fairy stories. To each his own, of course.
Of course, I'm curious... are you the real Truth Teller? This seems awfully close to the prediction made earlier, and I can't believe the real Truth Teller wouldn't have actually read the posted comments before voicing his own...
Truth Commenter @ Feb 15th 2008 12:44PM
TruthTeller aka Dave: "Walmart will continue to stock 'upconverting DVD players'"
Yup, ok Dave. I guess an HD-DVD player with no
HD-DVD software will just be a upconverting DVD
player. True enough. Walmart may stock those.
Great. A really good point there.?.
Now Dave, just how does this Walamrt news give
you any encouragement HD-DVD isn't going away?
Oh, wait. That's a rational question. You
only like to respond with flame bait as
evidenced by your 2/14/08 quote:
"But it is fun taking the pi$$ out of the PS3 console
kiddies and watching them get all puffed up & indignant
over not beng taken seriously as a/v enthuisiasts"
Dave, I don't take you seriously as an a/v enthuisiast.
Do you even watch HD movies? Or is it just the lulz?
Truth TelIer @ Feb 15th 2008 1:00PM
@ Geoffrey
Of course I'm the real TruthTeller you pathetic PS3 gameboy kiddie.
I'm . . .
I'm . . .
I'm JUST HAVING A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN !
Yeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhhh my world is collapsing! ! !
This is worse than the day Toshiba was caught
selling submarine secrets to the Russians.
HD-DVD is melting . . . melting . . . melting . . .
XDragon @ Feb 15th 2008 1:05PM
TT, now you're just being foolish. HD-DVD as a disc format is dead. Yes, the players can be rebranded as upsampling but HD-DVD discs will not be sold there so the format is dead. Just deal with it and stop trying to spin things. Its just over lets all move on.
okeygrak @ Feb 15th 2008 12:15PM
Seriously Guys! It's not only time to move on from HD-DVD, but to move on from Truth Teller and Nfinity as well. Those two pawn peddling clowns are as obsolete and irrelevant as the format they keep blindly pushing.
Besides, we have more important things to discuss at this point. We could be talking about 1080p high bit-rate transfers, uncompressed soundtracks, and new and excited players from MANY manufacturers.
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 15th 2008 12:20PM
Seriously, ENGADGET HD, et. al. should now start BD vs DVD sales comparisons. That's were the real battle lies now.
dobyblue @ Feb 15th 2008 12:18PM
Wow - I thought I knew what the word "douchebag" meant, but having read Truth Teller's posts I have a whole new understanding of the word.
