Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending February 10th, 2008

So much for that trend as according to this week's Nielsen VideoScan numbers courtesy of Home Media Magazine Blu has put red back into the teens with a 81/19 split. It isn't too hard to figure out what 's driving the numbers this week as Warner and Sony take most of the market with new releases and the number three title outselling four by about 2:1. HD DVD's new release did make the top 10 at number nine, but only sold a fourth of what Sony's Across the Universe did -- who'd a thought it'd be number one though. Next week is going to be a lot of the same, but with so many HD DVD sales going on, we'd be very surprised if red wasn't back out the teens. But with every week that goes by and Paramount and Universal fail to announce new titles, we just can't help but believe that all these rumors that the end is near for HD DVD are true.

Yawn... could we have this with BD vs DVD instead?
indadogghouse @ Feb 15th 2008 1:46PM
Don't think they can draw a slice that small...

Yes, that would be good, then you blu peole will realize what a piss in the ocean BR media is and that at the ridiculous prices BR charge, that is where things are going to stay, niche market.
okeygrak @ Feb 15th 2008 1:35PM
I'm looking forward to the day when we could give a shit about this.
Lets push the studios to start releasing more catalog titles and day and date releases. Who's up for the Indiana Jones Quadrilogy Collectors Set in 1080p this fall?
HD4ME @ Feb 16th 2008 12:13AM
That's grammatically incorrect, it should read.....I'm looking forward to the day when we COULDN'T give a shit about this.
If we could give a shit, it means it is still a major concern :)
HedonismBot @ Feb 15th 2008 1:37PM
Boy, was I wrong. Based on eProductWars, I called for a substantial gain in HD-DVD this week. It appears HD-DVD is more boned than even I had thought. Oh well, so much for a correlation between Amazon salesrank and Nielsen VideoScan.
ProfWho @ Feb 15th 2008 1:37PM
So, where is the boost I have been hearing about for HD-DVD?
mlody11 @ Feb 15th 2008 1:41PM
I think we can all agree HD DVD is going the way of the Dodo. In the coming months, BD has the big task of convincing the consumer to buy BD. Questions coming up..
Will the price drops (both player and media) continue vigorously as before?
Will the profile debacle turn people away from BD?
What kinds of law suits will come from the DRM?
What will happen to managed copy? (a shit low-res added digital copy is not my idea of next gen...)
These weekly numbers shouldn't even matter anymore. Lets see DVD v. BD!
qo_op @ Feb 15th 2008 1:59PM
YEA!!!!!!!!
/ sarcasm
I think we're all aware of the lack of HDTV's movies and players in the US but does it need to constantly be brought up? Of course HD gets outsold by the standard. now plz stfu.
nihillasohen @ Feb 15th 2008 1:45PM
Someone please drop a line to Toshiba......they are pwned! My suggestion would be a nice valentines day basket or sing-a-gram.

Ok Nfinity, you said that this week would show a continued gain for HDDVD, you were wrong, ready to admit that fact?
andyj @ Feb 15th 2008 2:01PM
I don't think we'll see nfinity on these boards much anymore ... at least not in his "nfinity" name ... he's probably crying himself to sleep right about now ;)
andyj @ Feb 15th 2008 2:00PM
The fact that HD DVD lost ground in spite of their huge BOGOs shows how dead it truly is.
HD4ME @ Feb 16th 2008 12:19AM
You don't think it might have anything to do with the BDA propaganda machine spewing out unrelenting garbage to scare the HD DVD buyers from the market?
No, of course not, i keep forgetting, the consumer decided this war.
regeya @ Feb 16th 2008 3:03AM
Agreed, HD4ME. Most of the negative news this month has been hearsay, percentages (sometimes based on unofficial, leaked numbers), and out and out lies. And a week of mostly rumors is enough to put HD DVD on the deathwatch on a popular website, one that seems to be deciding this (yet refuses to acknowledge the imminent death of plasma TVs, hm.) Yet the FUD campaing seems to be working, so oh well.
Hey, do those Sammy units going for $99-$150 do PiP? ;-) Their ugly lawsuit is my gain!
bizdady @ Feb 15th 2008 2:02PM
Bogos and Sales sure didnt help HDDVD none.
cheese head @ Feb 15th 2008 2:03PM
The good lord says he can get me(Blu-ray) out of this mess, but he says you're(HD DVD) pretty much fucked!
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 15th 2008 2:05PM
BRAVEHEART (Paramount) - Coming soon to Blu-Ray
Big Wizz @ Feb 15th 2008 3:43PM
cheese head,
I thought I had a funny pic, but you take the cheese. I LOL'ed at work. My hats off to you, sir.
Rick @ Feb 15th 2008 2:12PM
woo Ben was right "in the teens" kudos.
mcrexx @ Feb 15th 2008 2:14PM
OWNED! Come on Paramount/Universal, time to wave the blu flag!
roger_huston @ Feb 15th 2008 2:33PM
Yea, I remember when plugging a teen was a good thing. To much of an old fart for that now...

Now that there's confidence in 1 HD format, we can see if more people will choose Blu-Ray over DVD in the coming months. It will be a slow adoption but at least it will happen now that the confusion is gone.
YouFaceTheTick @ Feb 15th 2008 4:47PM
270k people picked up a Blu Ray player in the USA in January alone (see PS3 sales for January). Globally, there are over 10 million people with Blu Ray players in their homes. HD-DVD hasn't even reached 2 million.
The adoption rate is moving at probably over 5 million per year right now.
HD4ME @ Feb 16th 2008 12:27AM
Your stoned, just like the rest of the blu idiots, HD media is slow because DVD is so good and blu ray is so expensive.
The average Joe doesn't even know there is/was a format war.
Enjoy your niche market, HD DVD was the consumer friendly product that MIGHT of maybe, perhaps have reached the mass market.
The blu ray cartel is going to milk you early adopters for as long as they can, then it will be something else, probably downloads.
blu ray will NEVER be mass market, enjoy your niche market product and i hope you enjoy the exorbitantly overpriced reaming that is coming your way
XDragon @ Feb 16th 2008 8:21AM
HD4ME,
you're just wrong.
The format war is over and people were very aware of it and thats why people were waiting for the dust to settle.
So if HD-DVD was so consumer friendly, why did it lose? No one forced Blu to win besides the majority picking it as their prefered format. The push from studios and retailers is only less than 2 months old so there's no excuse. You're just mad because you picked the wrong side which could never win just because of all the electroic companies making Blu vs ...how many make HD-DVD players? That alone is its downfall not to mention a list of other reasons.
hemmy @ Feb 15th 2008 2:47PM
Next weeks numbers is where we'll see the effect of the Wallmart fallout, so there's room for things to get even uglier. 90:10 ?
Rumor is Toshiba is going to wave the white flag quite soon, perhaps within the next few weeks.
Ryan @ Feb 15th 2008 3:00PM
my god can we just stop this already....how long are you going to claim it's dead....I couldn't care less who wins out....but come on how long are we going to drag this out, and keep reading the same comments over and over.
cheese head @ Feb 15th 2008 3:26PM
In case you havn't heard, HD DVD is dead!
Elad @ Feb 15th 2008 3:37PM
Hey, did any tell you HD DVD is dead...
Just thought I'd let you know.
Ron @ Feb 15th 2008 4:29PM
I do believe HD DVD is dead!
1stGreg @ Feb 15th 2008 3:37PM
Psst Ben...
The Amazon and Best Buy HD DVD sales were already going on this past week ;)
Next numbers will reflect the consumers reaction after the Netflix/ Best Buy and now Walmart anounces.
Could be interesting :)
DrXym @ Feb 15th 2008 4:36PM
HD DVD sales will be down to single digits within a month.
mark @ Feb 16th 2008 1:55AM
Whine all you want, HD-DVD boys. None of it will bring HD-DVD back to life! Mua-ha-ha-ha!!!
regeya @ Feb 16th 2008 3:12AM
Eh, I'm not gonna whine. I got my player during the firesale. Looks like the BD firesales are starting now, since it seems like people are waiting for Profile 2.0, and confidence went down after it was found out the only future-proof player right now is the PS3.
So my brilliant plan is to take advantage of this and snag either a Profile 1.1 player or a PS3 (likely the former; don't care about games, don't care about lame "exclusive online content") as soon as the income tax refund comes in. Maybe I should nonchalantly stroll through my local Sears...
