Michael Bay singlehandedly wins the HD format war
Finally, Michael Bay has stepped down from Cheese Mountain to pontificate on the finer points of the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray war. Speaking from the inner-sanctum of his lair -- located equidistant from the Church of Scientology and a gigantic cotton candy stand -- Mr. Bay reminds us that, "Blu-ray's better, and I told everyone," then goes on to further prop himself by adding, "I was very vocal about it. I knew HD [DVD] was not going to make it." We're glad that Bay can sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that the mere "quality" of the formats decided the winner of this battle, rather than massive business partnerships fueled by the desire for marketshare. He wrapped up his message (actually given at an awards ceremony held by the Visual Effects Society) by saying, "Am I thrilled? It really wasn't my fight, but remember what I said in the press? I was kind of saying HD [DVD]'s going to lose... No one believed me." He then slammed a trophy he was receiving to the floor, pointed to the packed room, and yelled, "In your face, HD DVD!"

*SLAMS TROPHY ON THE FLOOR* "Your Blu Ray movies will now be copied Mr. Bay!"
-angry tech community :)
Ghoti @ Feb 14th 2008 3:07PM
The comment about slamming the trophy to the floor was a joke guys. Although it was pretty comical reading about the stuff he really did say...
Keith @ Feb 14th 2008 11:11AM
Is he a Scientologist?
Suddenly his banter makes sense.
wreckedchevy @ Feb 14th 2008 11:14AM
am i the only one that thinks he is kind of an odd duck?
WallyB @ Feb 14th 2008 11:17AM
Can someone please remind Mr. Bay that his 2007 blockbuster, when released on HD DVD, won an industry award for "Best Audio Quality" (link: http://tinyurl.com/26838q)? Not to mention that it is also a reference-quality disc for video as well - stack it up against any BR disc & it'll put up a fight. So much for that "Blu-ray is better" blanket statement.
Ah well. Glad I'm purple.
Team America @ Feb 14th 2008 2:19PM
I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark
When he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
And that’s an awful lot girl
And now, now you’ve gone away
And all I’m trying to say is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you
I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He’s way better than Ben Affleck
And now all I can think about is your smile
and that shitty movie too
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you
Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you
andyg8180 @ Feb 14th 2008 11:19AM
jeezus... he needs to shut up and make movies... But with all this crybaby ranting, i am losing respect for him more and more... waaahhh i can haz bluray transformers?!? SHUT UP ASSHOLE!! he's turning into a director version of Tom Cruise...
Scientology and Blu-ray, there is nothing else in the world... YOU HEED MY WARNINGS PEONS!!
Mojo_Yugen @ Feb 14th 2008 4:35PM
Actually, if I HAVE to choose between listening to his insane dribble and watching one of his movies...I'll take the insane dribble anytime.
The_Baron @ Feb 14th 2008 11:23AM
Is he for real?? Michael Bay, your an inspiration to all self important douche-bags everywhere!
For your next amazing feat could you possibly create a perpetual energy machine? You could power it with your own feelings of superiority over all living things, there appears to be no shortage of that from you.
regeya @ Feb 14th 2008 11:23AM
What a douche. If I'd been drinking milk I'd have sprayed it out my nose. :->
Isn't this the same guy who said he'd been to hasty after he watched The 300 on HD DVD?
Ah, well; Blu-Ray's what's meant to win, so buy it NOW morons!!! WE SAID BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!! WE GOT A BOTTOM LINE TO BOOST HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
JayHDDVD @ Feb 14th 2008 11:25AM
Haha oh my.
Bay is a moron. His movies suck.
I'm all for blu ray but damn this guy is a tool!
He shouldn't be allowed to make movies.
Truth Teller @ Feb 14th 2008 11:26AM
Bay's a paid shill who proved the last time out that he'll say whatever he thinks he needs to say to whore himself for the next movie.
It's not even as if he's all that as a director anyways.
DrXym @ Feb 14th 2008 3:13PM
That or he has an informed opinion about movie formats and has chosen to voice it much to the chagrin of certain fools such as yourself. His movies still suck though.
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Feb 14th 2008 11:30AM
I could give 2 shits about Bay. His movies are entertaining and full of action, just not very deep. So, where does that leave the "other" vocal proponent of Blu?
Steven Spielberg has repeatedly refused ANY of his movies on HD_DEAD. Universal has tried several times to show that JP, ET, and his other BIG hits were coming to HD_DEAD in press conferences or keynote speeches, the last attempt came in Tokyo and within a day Mr. Spielberg said "no soup for you Universal" on putting his movies on HD_DEAD.
I cannot understand why Universal did not take the hint that some of the BIGGEST movies they have could not be released on the format they support. Paramount quickly found themselves in the same boat when they switched over for $$$ to HD_DEAD.
All I have to say now to Universal and Paramount is....HA HAH!!
Withing months they will come crawling to BLU and we will have a unified medium and finally the big guns the studios have been holding back will be released.
Blake H @ Feb 14th 2008 11:38AM
LOL U R SO FUNNY AND CLEVER
David S @ Feb 14th 2008 5:19PM
Sometimes... I think you and Truth Teller are really the same person. Maybe the whole format war is just one person taking both sides of an issue.
GENIUS!!!
wysiwyg @ Feb 14th 2008 11:31AM
Pearl Harbor sucked bad. I agree, he is a tool. Nothing but a loud yelling crazy guy who's always had too much to drink.
Patrick @ Feb 14th 2008 11:33AM
At last, a post by EngadgetHD that is not only is not slanted toward Blu-ray, but might actually be considered favoring HD DVD.
tranzparentl @ Feb 14th 2008 11:38AM
His pompus statements have made me despise the guy. I certainly won't pay for any movies he has a hand in anymore. Just make a movie and shut up will ya!
John B @ Feb 14th 2008 11:44AM
O RLY? Well, in that case ... I declare that widescreen.org is completely responsible for the adoption of 16x9 widescreen for high definition TV! I told you that 4x3 screens would never make it!
Am I thrilled? It really wasn't my fight, but remember what I've been saying on my site? I was kind of saying pan [and scan]'s going to lose... No one believed me.
{ throwing portable, 5-inch black-and-white TV on the ground }
In your face, "full screen"!
Wow, Bay's arrogance is astounding. To quote Rowan Atkinson, Michael Bay "is the kind of man we used to describe at school ... as a complete prick. He's the sort of person people emigrate to avoid."
wreckedchevy @ Feb 14th 2008 11:46AM
hd-dead now there's a real act of brilliance and maturity, glad too see your teacher let's you use the computer during recess....
JimC @ Feb 14th 2008 11:50AM
At least HD-DEAD is only 3 syllables....easier to say....
dman @ Feb 14th 2008 11:50AM
Now if only his movies were worth watching...
superklye @ Feb 14th 2008 11:52AM
I keep forgetting that 1080p on HD DVD is inferior to 1080p on Blu-ray, even when movies use the same encode for both formats because Blu-ray is "beyond high definition."
Thank you, Michael Bay, for showing us how Blu-ray's 1080p truly is higher-definition than HD DVD's 1080p.
HD DVD = HD lite.
...what a massive tool. And being a Scientologist explains a LOT. But, isn't he always drunk? I thought Scientologists/Xenu frowned on alcohol?
Brian @ Feb 14th 2008 12:09PM
I think a lot of people reading this post are missing the subtle humor in the Scientology comment. As far as I know, Michael Bay is not a Scientologist...as a matter of fact, according to his biography his adoptive mother is a child psychiatrist, which Scientology definitely frowns upon. Plus, I highly doubt he truly slammed the trophy down and said "In your face HD-DVD". If he did, show me the video. So, while this does not change the fact that most of Michael Bay's movies suck (except The Rock, great flick), it does show that a lot of the posters on this website don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Get a sense of humor folks.
superklye @ Feb 14th 2008 12:20PM
@Brian
Speaking of humor, better check your sarcasm detector and re-read my post, brah.
I know the trophy part was a joke (at least, I hope it was), but was honestly curious about Scientology.
And my post was referring to previous (retarded) outbursts by Michael Bay claiming that HD DVD wasn't really HD.
kthxbai.

jody @ Feb 14th 2008 12:04PM
Michael Bay is just stumping for all of the Blu-Ray fan-boys out there, he's their kind of people. Why on earth would a director be so passionate about a physical media format? I hope Paramount stays red and Transformers never comes out on Blu.
What a douche.....
Elad @ Feb 14th 2008 2:15PM
Why would a movie watcher be so passionate about a physical media format? I think he's an idiot. But so are all the Truth Teller and Nfinitys out there. At least he's in the industry. I've seen you support both of those idiots, and seen your red for life posts as well. Michael Bay is clearly an idiot for what he's been saying, and has made maybe two good movies, and a slew of garbage. I agree totally with your statement of "why would someone care so much about a physical media format" sounds RIDICULOUS coming from you. Especially considering you say after that that you hope Transformers stays red. Why the fuck do you care. Is it in spite of Michael Bay. Do you realize how pathetic it is that you hope to spite a man that doesn't even know who you are?
jsn @ Feb 14th 2008 12:13PM
way to go, he vocally backed a broken, unfinished standard that offers nothing over the competition beyond slightly more space. I hope everyone that backed blu-ray is proud of their overall childishness because you helped screw us all in the process.
Vidikron (FU) @ Feb 14th 2008 3:37PM
Wow... childishness? So how do Nfinity and Truth Teller fit into that? And, no, I haven't been screwed at all by BR coming out ahead.
chav3z @ Feb 14th 2008 12:20PM
wow, if transformers 2 is as bad as number 1 than I'm glad it won't be on hd-dvd. He already has it written which hey, I'm just saying he doesn't need any writers at all.

Yes, Mr. Bay, you single handedly stopped the format war. We all finally listened to your rants. In fact, they should name it Blu-Bay.

Or Bay Ray
domerdel @ Feb 14th 2008 1:14PM
Everyone, go download/TiVo Southpark episode trilogy: Imagination land, the michael bay interview is hilarious.
ComeGetVirus @ Feb 14th 2008 1:29PM
Oh, dear what a sad a pathetic collection of posters we have here. Accepting that you are a loser is a painful thing, especially when you are being told it by someone you so obviously despise. Just remember, Mr Bay was right, which makes him a smarter and more rational person than you are.
vinnie1023 @ Feb 14th 2008 2:56PM
The problem isn't that he's right, it's that he's so adamant about saying he told us so. He's completely out of touch with reality and yet says "look! My crybaby ranting turned out to be right for reasons completely unrelated to my rant! Suck it, bitches!"
Personally, despite having bought an HD-DVD add-on for my 360, I don't care all that much about the format war as long as a clear winner emerges soon (and it looks like that's going to be the case this year) so that consumers have the option to buy one player which plays every movie released in HD. I think that HD-DVD is a better format in terms of stability and reliability, but clearly Blu-Ray is more flexible and upgradeable, so you win some and you lose some. If Toshiba and Sony weren't both so stubborn about the superiority of their respective formats before this whole thing began, we wouldn't even be arguing about this, so I guess they're really the ones to blame for this mess.
MI @ Feb 14th 2008 2:44PM
I mean... He's right, but definitely a mental case.
Perhaps Him and Al Gore can get an internet connection on to the BD players?

"Perhaps Him and Al Gore can get an internet connection on to the BD players?" best line on engadget post in a long time.
DrXym @ Feb 14th 2008 3:11PM
His movies are atrocious no matter what format they are on. Transformers was damned with faint praise by most critics simply for exceeding their low expectations.
Kevin @ Feb 14th 2008 5:45PM
I am not a blu-ray fan! First of all you have to ditch or replace you DVD player because you can't play a blu-ray disc in a DVD player while HD-DVD can! Second of all you have to pay a hefty amount of hard earned bucks to a blu-ray disc player while you pay half to 1/3 of the cost of blu-ray in HD-DVD! I love HD-DVD but I wish these companies can sign an agrrement to mix up blu-ray's quality and memory to hd-dvd's ability to play in a DVD player! The name could be Super Multi Blu HD-DVD Disc or Super Blu HD DVD! That would be nice in one disc with three formats (DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray Disc) so nobody would sacrifice thier player and/or discs! Peace is peace deal with it!!!
Gus @ Feb 14th 2008 6:31PM
Several words jump to mind re this idiot, tool, *anker, F'K stick, knob jockey........ sounds like some of the regulars here !!! :)
JBDragon @ Feb 15th 2008 1:48AM
Blu-Ray may have won the battle, but DVD will in the end, continue to win the war. I can only hope people will smarten up and have nothing to do with that DRM infested rushed to the marketplace garbage. I can only hope it's no more successful then Sony's SACD. I well never, ever, buy, rent, or borrow a Blu-Ray movie. I hope, in the end it completely fails, the sooner, the better, and in a coupe more years, a better, more consumer friendly HD format gets released. Die, Blu-Ray Die...
HD4ME @ Feb 15th 2008 7:16AM
