BDA gloats over selling 2 million Blu-ray Discs in Europe
It's almost comical how quickly the Blu-ray Disc Association gets its thoughts and feelings out to the world after crossing any milestone, and yet again we see the BDA rushing to pat itself on the back after moving some 2.37 million BD titles in Europe. According to recent sales figures, 79-percent of all high-definition movies purchased across the pond year-to-date have been of the Blu variety, and as expected, Sony's PlayStation 3 is given quite a bit of credit for the results. According to David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, passing the 2 million mark in Europe will allow supporters to "focus less on winning a format war and more on addressing the needs of the consumer in adopting the Blu-ray format." Confident, are we?

And at the prices they charge in Europe, it's rather a wonder.
Nfinity @ Feb 14th 2008 4:47AM
Makes you wonder if it's the giveaways and free stuff they are giving actually the reason..
around 3-4 million Blu-Ray players in Europe with PS3s and they still can't get more then 0.5-0.7 per unit.. pathetic really..
Mark @ Feb 14th 2008 10:32AM
Free stuff and giveaways? The only giveaway was Casino Royale to the first PS3 owners and a couple of free Spider Man 3 promotions. Nothing compared to the frenzy of giveaways conducted by both sides in the US.
2 million sales is very impressive considering how expensive HD discs are in Europe. It bodes well for when they lower them to a price that normal people (not early adopters) would be prepared to pay for them.

Warner Home Video Adopts UMD
Tuesday, 01 November 2005
Warner Home Video became the 6th and final major studio to announce that it will release products using the Universal Media Disc (UMD) format.
The initial line up includes 9 titles -- eight movies and one TV show, including a mix of older releases in addition to new titles, being released on UMD alongside their DVD counterparts.
From 6th December - The Dukes of Hazzard, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volume 4 (Cartoon Network).
From 20th December - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman Begins, Constantine, House of Wax, The Matrix, Terminator 3, Enter The Dragon.
The news bolsters what has been an impressive series of events for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) and it sibling UMD format in recent weeks.
Sales of UMD movies are eclipsing those of UMD game titles in terms of expected sales, with UMD movies keeping chasing sales of game with a 3:4 ratio. Recently, global sales totals for the PSP surpassed 10 million before the anticpated Christmas boost, prompting Sony to up targets.
Unsuprisingly, in terms of major studio take up of the Sony UMD media format, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment represents the most activity. 51 UMD movie titles already available with scheduled to follow.

UMDs Hollywood-success
10/9/2005
Recent figures from Sony suggest that UMD movies continue to make up a large part of PSP entertainment with 17 million UMD manufactured to date of which 9 million were games and 8 million movies and music videos.
But going forward Sony predicts this proportion will grow, with 60 percent of total UMD manufacturing being movie and music-based. Indeed by 2008, Sony reckons it will sell around 130 million UMDs of which only 50 million will be games. Currently production is limited to around 60 million UMDs a year, although this is soon expected to rise to around 150 million.

If you believe that BS attachment statement released by the HD DVD Promotional Group that is.
It would seem you use the same trick as they do. Normally you downplay the PS3 as meaning nothing, yet pull it up when you want to throw about comparative numbers with hardware and software.
If you want to check what is truly pathetic. How about you find out how much HD DVD hardware and software has been sold in Europe?
Kris Lee @ Feb 14th 2008 5:07AM
Wow! Big percent of nothing. Meanwhile billions of DVD titles were sold.
But this is not surprise when we consider HD title prices in Europe: 26 to 30 euro are normal HD retail prices when DVD prices are between 12 and 20 euro (and promotions reach bellow 10 euro). In one shop I saw Shooter HD-DVD for 40 euro. I wonder that they even sell one of this title there.
But then, when I sent my HD-DVD player free movies coupon and got no reply for many weeks and when I asked by email, what is the status, then I got reply that they are unable to process my request jet and it will take another weeks because they got unsuspected rate of requests.

(right, really, all-righty then, question...when was it decided that 1 year into the next console cycle that the War is over?) My opinion, the Wii is NOT in this console cycle, it is a dressed up GC with a waggle controller.
"Product development $1 billion"
(Sony was NOT the only company developing Blu and besides...when is the development of NEW technology cheap? Oh, that's right...when Toshiba crams a blue laser (which they quickly copied from Sony after realizing that the RED laser for HD would not be up to snuff) into existing DVD technology)
"Bribing Studios to go blu $2 billion"
(again, NO...studios seeing that BlU is outselling HD_DEAD for EVERY SINGLE WEEK OF 2007 had something to do with Warner switching)
"Bribing retail to drop $1billion

(uh no, retail will NOT STOCK what does not sell)
"Advertising/brainwashing $2 billion

(since when is advertising NOT brainwashing and FUD?)
"Damning their blu ray product to a niche market because of their arrogance and greed ....................PRICELESS"

So Blu-ray well and truly in the game console niche and utterly invisible to the a/v mass-market as I've been saying all along.

In the not sure I believe this category, 1080Living is reporting that Toshiba has a Blu-ray player in the works.
Apparently the player was originally scheduled for September 2008 but may be moved up to July given the recent events in the marketplace.
One source cited 2 players are in the works with a price target of $250 and $350.00.
I normaly wouldnt believe all this but it has the nuber of models price points and date changes this is probably based on some kind of fact. It also is being reported by a reliable source.

Netflix has Interesting Predictions for Blu-ray Disc
Posted on February 13, 2008 by Dave Cowl
Filed Under Format War, Blu-ray |
Over at Silicon Alley Insider they have posted notes from the Netflix conference call from late January.
While Netflix insight into the studios may or may not be better than anyone else, they made the following comments regarding Blu-ray Disc:
Appears Blu-ray has advantage in format war. Consumer adoption will
increase. Look out for players falling below $200, and Universal and
Paramount adopting Blu-ray. Would be a positive for studios and NFLX,
fueling "another decade" of "robust, robust" disc-based entertainment.
Again, it is not clear if they have insider information or are just hazarding a guess - none the less it is pretty interesting to see this statement to their shareholders.
Lets see I would have to agree you make a bold decision to support one format and then back it up to your investors by providing things for them took look for.
Heres another.
Michael Bay says I Told You So
Posted on February 13, 2008 by Dave Cowl
Filed Under Format War, Blu-ray, Studios |
Another fun read over at Home Media Magazine. It seems that Michael Bay has been enjoying the recent positive news for Blu-ray Disc.
In fact, it seems that Bay believes it is all over for HD DVD. Blu-rays better, and I told everyone, Bay said at the Visual Effects Societys sixth annual award show, where he presented the award for animated character in a motion picture. I was very vocal about it. I knew HD [DVD] was not going to make it.
Am I thrilled? It really wasnt my fight, but remember what I said in the press? I was kind of saying HD [DVD]s going to lose, he said. No one believed me.
Bay personally supervises his Blu-ray transfers and says he loves his preferred format. Its just sharper, he said. Its just [that] the tools are better. I just think its closer to what it should look like.
Perhaps Bay has something more to be happy about - the rumours floating around right now from multiple sources hint at news that will transform the format war coming very soon, with some setting Friday Feb 15th as the day. Officials remain tight lipped.
Keep in mind that this is seriously in the realm of rumour and conjecture! There have been many times where these days come and go with no news or excitement. Still it should be an interesting day, if only for the disc market share numbers for week ending Feb 10.
Here is more speculation about announcment. Do you think people are going to keep going out on a limb and supporting a format that is going to fail if they dont already know something? Come on......
And Last.
Wal-Mart trims HD DVD player lineup
Business and Law
By Wolfgang Gruener

Recommend article:
Chicago (IL) Wal-Mart has begun phasing out two of its three HD DVD players that have been offered in stores and through its website in past months.
Industry sources told TG Daily that Wal-Mart is phasing out the RCA HDV5000 as well as the Venturer SHD7000 models. The RCA player has been offered exclusively in stores for initially $399, was then reduced to $299 and is currently sold on the clearance rack for $148. The Venturer device is available online and carries a clearance price of $167, down from $199.98.
Store employees from three different Wal-Mart locations in the Chicago area confirmed that the stores will not be restocking these models.
However, the company apparently plans to keep one Toshiba player in its lineup for at least 4 months, we heard. The HD-A3 player is currently sold in stores for $148.
There was no official comment from Wal-Mart about its HD DVD and Blu-ray offering.
These stories all came about in the last 24-48 hours. Lets see last time this much BUZZ was kicked up what happend? Oh Shit thats right Warner went Blu-ray! I mean I am all about routing for the underdog but you guys are gluttons for punishment! I see everyone criticizing blu-ray for selling this many units, but they are still selling way more units than HD-DVD (especially in Europe as well as Japan). People seem to forget that this is a world-wide format, but just choose to look at the numbers from the USA. If you look at the world-wide numbers, the margin is much bigger than the numbers you see for the US all of the time.
SamiSin @ Feb 14th 2008 8:55AM

Well that's typical blanket branding BS coming from you! Just shows what an ignorant bs artist you really are. You don't respect anyone!
"Self-praise is no praise at all, even the youngest infants are taught that."
Which begs the question, where did it go so wrong with you!
"Pretty funny to see that his time they're not giving HD DVD numbers."
Well that is a typical trick of the HD DVD Promotion Group! Twist numbers round to big up their woefully low numbers.
I also note that they claim "3.2M PS3s and 340,000 standalone players) and 2.3M Blu-ray discs sold."
Which also raises the question about where the HD DVD Promotional Group calculated their BS attachment rate numbers from.
So Blu-ray well and truly in the game console niche and utterly invisible to the a/v mass-market as I've been saying all along.
Utterly invisible according to who? You? Well excuse me if I don't call that out as horseshit! Game console niche? The only person who comes to that conclusion is YOU! Sales are saying something completely different, so your wasting your breath!
"Blu-ray have won nothing - except the occasional sales in the PS3 market, which is (at the levels they are at) nothing to be shouting about, at all."
Yeah, you keep re-posting this crap, but the fact is they have won what they set out to do...expand sales of Blu-ray! You expect an overnight success with a total transition from DVD to HD. LOL!

You'll not be taking the mainstream a/v mass-market.....Blu-ray doesn't even have a proper range of full spec players to offer anyone.

Too bad your game console fanboy-ism is blinding you to the facts about this.

I mean what evidence do you have that most people on this site have ps3's as their Bluray Players?
For all this talk of "kiddies" you're the one who comes out as childish and annoying.
Please answer my question. I'm really interested to see why you don't think HD DVD is dead and what it would take for the war to be "over" and for their to be a "winner". However YOU define winner keep in mind.
Is it when one format has 100% Movie Studio support?
Truth Teller @ Feb 14th 2008 11:25AM
The (rather obvious) answer to your rather silly & childish question CassilineKnight is that a substantial move by either format into the mass-market will show who has won.
Neither are remotely close to that just yet.
Blu-ray has the PS3. That's it.
It's invisible outside of the game console niche. Period.
Of course I know you PS3 game console adolescent kids hate it when it's pointed out to you that you are PS3 game console kids and that you do not constitute the majority of anything in the wider and much mich bigger a/v market.
But sometimes you lot clearly need to be told a few home truths and in this case it's obvious that the truth hurts, eh?
CassilineKnight @ Feb 14th 2008 11:35AM
Wow you clearly are retarded.
I DO NOT OWN a ps3.
And by your definition of win we won't see a winner for years!? Are you kidding me?
As for the ps3 again are you STUPID? Who hasn't heard of sony or the ps3? Hell who hasn't heard of videogames!? Ask any moron on the street and I'm sure they'll rattle off the Wii, the 360, and the ps3 in a heartbeat. People know that these videogame consoles exist. How can you call millions of ps3 owners a "niche" market.
Lol some defense you got there.
So VHS and Betamax were niche markets too at one point right? Same for DVD?
Personally Bluray will be the official winner when Paramount and Dreamworks join them...how long that will take is anyone's guess.
But when it does happen that will mean that there is only ONE HD format for people to buy and thats Bluray. At that time prices will be affordable and continued competetion will drive them further down allowing for this "mass market adoption".
In short I see its pointless talking with you. All you seem capable of doing is spouting the same rhetoric and bs while using "kiddies" every so often.

You asked TruthTeller aka Dave: "What will it take to convince you that Bluray has won the war?"
I'm pretty sure Dave (TruthTeller) begrudgingly
realizes the format war is indeed over. I've
read a lot of his prior posts and you can see
various acknowledgements here and there.
In my view the only reason Dave continues
to fight is he's still quite sore about the
whole affair and takes sport in yanking the
chain of any one who finds interest in his
sword enemy, the dreaded Blu-Ray.
This is supported by his use of various
verbal devices, like "PS3 console kids",
which are simply designed to stir people
up and have no argumentative merit.
If you enjoy sparing with him as many of us
occasionally do, have at it. But if you're
looking for meaningful dialog I'd avoid
him because at this point, that's not what
he's in this for.

See, if you focus on BD vs. HD alone, it looks like a bigger win.
Channeling CE firms and studios now...
So here's the deal, guys. We sold two million of these things in Europe, see? That means it's full of WIN. And this is what we're replacing DVD with, and we invested a LOT of MONEY into making sure this thing WINS, so BUY INTO IT NOW! MORONS!!! NOOOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! GODDAMNIT WE SAID *NOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!* OH JESUS FRAK WE'RE GOING BROKE!!!!!!!!
LOL. All the self-congratulatory B.S. is getting as old as the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray rhetoric. We get it. You're replacing DVD with Blu-Ray. At current prices don't expect mass adoption just yet. I mean, how long did it take for DVD? For VHS? Get those units cheaper and those software titles cheaper, and you'll see that mass adoption you expect right away. People got spoiled by DVD being so cheap and SDTVs being so cheap that you're going to have to do *something* other than giving obsolete players away with expensive TVs. Deal with it; BD isn't going to be the cash cow the CE manufacturers are hoping to get. Boo freaking hoo, cry me a river.

Truth Teller @ Feb 14th 2008 12:06PM
Blu-ray is not taking off at all.
That's total fanboy day-dreaming BS.
BD movie sales are down in fact.
DVD at this stage had higher numbers than Blu-ray
(and DVD was not launched built in to a game console always bound to sell millions).
So this much parroted claim is not only factually bogus but stands no serious & reasonable examination.
The truth is, for all the PS3 fanboy claims, that Blu-ray has underwhelmed mightily.
It has a PS3 presence (how could it not have) but it is all but invisible to the genuine mainstream mass-market.
