Sony vaults to top of latest North American LCD sales rankings, Samsung still king overall
Betcha didn't see this one coming. After Vizio and Samsung battled over the last few quarters for LCD supremacy here in North America, Sony has ratcheted up to number one after boosting its market share in said region from 9.7-percent to 12.8-percent. According to new research from DisplaySearch, Sony was the leading brand in the 40- to 44-inch, 45- to 49-inch and 50- to 54-inch LCD segments. 'Course, Samsung still remained king of the overall flat-panel market (and notched silver medals in both LCD and plasma sales), but it was Panasonic holding onto the top spot overall in PDP market share. Where's Vizio, you ask? Clinging to the bronze in both LCD and overall flat-panel sales. Hit the read link for lots more numbers -- if you're into that type of stuff, that is.

I got a Sony KDL46v3000 at Sams for less than 1700 and couldn't be happier. I was never really enamored with the picture quality of the Vizio.

All that does is tell me how many people are overpaying for a name when in fact they could have bought BETTER AND CHEAPER.While i'm not going to go into "what and why", i will say that ANYONE thinking about buying a bigscreen LCD HDTV ought to do their homework before plunkig down their hard earned cash on one because while Sony is the most expensive brand across the board, for that money you aren't getting the best in quality and obviously not price. Those graces belong to other manufacturer's who's names begin with "S" also.

its samsung......even with the same panel it does not match the color and clarity of a sony.
X-series blows the hell hell outta any sammy put next to it.

I've seen a lot of Sony LCDs deeply discounted lately.

whats sad is garbage like polorid and vizio are on the list. How are these competing with the big boys? And sharp is no peach. Its problematic. when it comes to lcd tvs theres no competition for #1 besides sony and samsung. The rest are nobodys in comparison (quality wise). I bought a samsung myself, but had that not been avaiable to me, I would of seconded with sony. If I could not get either, I would not purchase.

Mike-
People want big cheap TV's. Quality is 3rd.
Depending on the size and set Sony, Samsung or Phillips have the best displays out there.
The other brands of sets usually cost 1/2 of the top 3's offerings.
Price is a big driver, not quality.

Yup. Those SONY guys that helped me buy the TV did a nice job. I was in a Circuit City where help is at a premium, usually you need to know your stuff ahead of time or they'll sell you whatever you look at first. I wanted a Samsung real bad. The SONY Guy said it was nice, but pointed out how it's like my notebook, which i scorn. I thought maybe the motion enhancers were the same but, yeah, after he left me alone and i looked at his XBRs i realized i just hadn't LOOKED. So, i splurged on that XBR 52 inch model. I have light and traffic right outside my back door. I am happy with it. I get to see it from any angle any time. What i found funny is that they do coown the company they get t heir panels from, but, Sammy and Sony take such a different approach. This thing has my media server hooked to it ,but, uh ,yeah, i built that myself. Even i can't justify buying a Vio desktop! I splurged once already.
Got Bluray free with it, and that rules too!!!

Any1 see the irony here? Your saying they usualy sell you what they want instead of helping you but this time was different. you went in with samsung in mind and walked out with a sony when a sony rep helped you. LOL. Nothing changed.

Its amusing to see how such a tiny company like Vizio can even compete against giants like Sony and Samsung.

I thought LG was a hot brand for the second half of last year... yet not in the top 5 for LCD??
