Panasonic aiming to make plasmas as energy efficient as LCDs
We've heard LCD manufacturers point out the low energy consumption in comparison to plasmas, but apparently, Panasonic's heard quite enough. Reportedly, a plan was hatched recently at the company's PDP plant in Amagasaki City to release a new plasma display that incorporates a technology to "reduce power consumption by half." Interestingly, said device is slated to launch sometime this Spring, but no further details were given. Moving forward, the company is hoping to bring the power-sipping characteristics to its entire PDP line by fiscal year 2009, but sadly, no model numbers or anything else remotely intriguing were handed out.

Plasma is almost as dead as HD-DVD at this point.

two words: black levels

You wish... any person who does their research knows Plasma offers the best PQ. especially black levels. Plasma also doesn't have to artificially add enhancements like LCD does just to get it to perform like a plasma (ex. response times, 120Hz refresh rates, and other BS).
why not the LS2LS7? @ Feb 9th 2008 12:52AM
120Hz is not a gimmick. When you want to watch a movie, which is 24fps, 60fps just won't reproduce it as well as a display at a multiple of 24Hz, like 120Hz.
Additionally, if you want to talk about gimmicks or fakery, plasma has the ultimate. Plasma is incapable of outputting ANY gradations of luminance. So in order to simulate different luminance levels, it has to flicker the display pixels.
They both have their advantages, and one of LCD's is power usage. I think it would be fantastic if plasma's power usage could be lowered to be in line with LCD. But I don't mean just fakery like plasma's stated contrast levels (which are actually not even possible on anything resembling a real image). With enough fakery, anyone can come up with a misleading stat (witness LCD's BS "4ms" numbers). So I'd love to see plasma really meet the power challenge, not just come up with rigged tests.

you obviously dont know your ass from a hole in the ground...

Very nice picture to go with this article! It is the PX600U, Panasonic's flagship model from 2006. I have the 42" model, and prefer it to any plasma released since, mostly because of the CableCARD slot (I don't care about VOD or PPV). And anyone who thinks plasma is dead is a moron, given plasma's better picture quality, and cheaper price per square inch.

Hmmmm, all these people now so concerned about power consumption.
Yet so many say they are only too happy to use the power-hungry PS3 as their video player instead of a standalone device
(which consumes so much less power - IIRC it's 25w v 125w).
Green hypocrisy, as per.

Depending on the model, could be more. The 90nm PS3s (i.e. anything but the newer 40GB models) draw closer to 175W for movie playback.

ANSI Contrast Ratios:
Sony XBR4/5 LCD: 1700:1
Pioneer Kuro Plasma: 3500:1
Nuff said.
