Barnes & Noble offers up deals on HD DVD titles
Wondering when someone would one-up Amazon's fairly continuous stream of deals on HD DVD movies? Today's your lucky day, friends, as Barnes & Noble is currently offering up a wide selection of flicks at 50-percent off -- but the fun doesn't stop there. The discounts get even deeper if you're a B&N Member, and there's an additional percent-off coupon floating around if the deal just isn't sweet enough. Go on, add a few more to your collection -- what else were you gonna spend your dough on this weekend?

HD-DVD fanboys are funny, i cant wait to read one of their comments!
anon @ Feb 8th 2008 12:10PM
Well I can't wait until there's a deluge of people call this sale a firesale. Because that stupid comment never gets old...

Where there's smoke...

OK then, DEEZNUTZ, by that "logic", I got 3 Blu-ray firesales for you:

Blu-ray must be giving up and throwing in the towel too. When will they just give up and let HD DVD win? Why must they drag on this war when they're obviously losing?
It sounds just as dumb when the Blu-ray backers say it.

Fanboys....
FIGHT!!!!

I find this article to be very strange for one reason.
When does Barnes and Noble ever have sales on ANYTHING???
WOW!
HD Tom @ Feb 8th 2008 12:33PM
Firesale? Pretty lame one if that's the case. I want to pick up some $5 disks before this is through!
coby @ Feb 8th 2008 1:00PM
Amazon has one just as good... over 100 hd dvds 1/2 off...

If thats not proof of a fire sale, I don't know what is.
I'm sorry, but retailers are moving this stuff out fast and cheap. You can't tell me that Amazon, Best, C City, ect don't see the writing on the wall.
I have not invested in either format nor do I really care who wins (and now clearly winning) I will buy when all the studios make the movies in one format.
Matthew Berg @ Feb 8th 2008 1:51PM
They're also doing at least 30% off _every_ Blu-ray disc. ZOMFG FIRE SALE. :)
Hell, look at some of the other BD promos. You've got Sony offering up to $890 off a bundle of an HDTV and BD player:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644530352
Or Sharp offering a free BD player with an HDTV purchase:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat140600050012&type=category
Or Panasonic offering $499 off an HDTV if you buy a $499 BD player:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=category&id=pcmcat138200050160
Seriously - both formats have been coming hard and heavy with the promotions since they launched. The only thing they prove is that HDM in general is struggling for meaningful adoption.

Interesting that it's all Universal titles. I'm glad to see Universal putting there money where there mouth is, even in the form of discounted pricing. I'd rather see more A-List titles being released, but a sale is a sale.
Bravo, Universal. Bravo, Barnes and Noble. Keep it up.
Mr Stevo @ Feb 8th 2008 1:49PM
These are great prices. To those who keep on saying that these are movies firesales, you're full of it. Blu-ray had BOGO after BOGO at Amazon. Then Best Buy and Circuit City followed. My HD library is 100% Blu-ray. But, I see a good deal here. I'd go for it, but I can't afford to support two HD formats. Ok, here's a curious point, if HD-DVD is on its last breath, how come when I go to the used movies bins, I see 5 Blu-rays for every HD-DVD movie? I've noticed it in every store I've been to. I'm not a blind fanboy, and I'm always willing to see things for what they are, and not the nonsense we've been spiting out at each other.
joe @ Feb 8th 2008 2:04PM
You logic is uncompelling. If Blu-Ray disks were outselling HD-DVD 5:1, one would expect to find more Blu-Ray disks in the used bin than HD-DVDs; you could make a similar argument based on your observations that Laserdisks are doing great, because you never see those in used bins anymore.
jody @ Feb 8th 2008 3:15PM
The reason you are seeing more used Blu-Ray is that they were purchased by PS3 owners who had nothing better to do but watch movies. Now that the games are coming many people, myself included, have moved our PS3's to the game or kids room and no longer watch Blu-Ray movies on it.
david @ Feb 8th 2008 2:12PM
I hope it's not a firesale. I'm a Blu-ray (PS3) owner and would love a pricing war to start...Blu-ray's are so expensive! Let's get costs down across the board!
