HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on February 5th, 2008
When you look at the lineup this week, don't be too quick to passover these titles. While nothing in the lineup really jumps out at us, we were very surprised to see how highly rated some of 'em were on IMDB, including the biggest title of the week, The Assassination of Jesse James, with a crazy score of 8.0. If none of the new releases are up your alley, then there is sure to be a catalog title for you, seriously, who doesn't like Wall Street? The red fans will have to be content with Elizabeth: The Golden Age this week, but it should hold them over as two big titles are coming down the pipe later this month. After looking at the lineup for both camps this week, we have no doubt that the VideoScan results will be a landslide again, but it will be very interesting to see how red does when American Gangster and Beowulf hit the shelves in a few weeks.HD DVD 384 vs Blu-ray 437*

Outch! The Pie-Chart isn't gonna look pretty for the red camp come Friday. HD DVD really is anemic on the release side these days.
HiFiFreak @ Feb 4th 2008 10:43AM
I thought Warner was still going to release in HD DVD until June?
Why arent there moveies in the HD DVD list?
Mr Stevo @ Feb 4th 2008 11:01AM
Blu-ray WB titles not matching on the Red side may have something to do with Warner's decision to add a 3 weeks delay for HD-DVD. That's the only reason I can think of.
JimC @ Feb 4th 2008 12:13PM
Yes, all WB titles released on both formats, until they stop HDDVD releases June 1st, will have a 3 week delay, however, I think "Jesse James" is a 6 week delay. This is their release strategy for HDDVD until they stop production. The reasoning is that by giving blu-ray a 3 week (or more) head start, they will give their chosen format greater visibility but still, by releasing HDDVD later, fulfill their obligation to HDDVD until June 1st.
eric @ Feb 4th 2008 10:44AM
how come they can't mention all the pornos that came out on HD DVD recently? over at highdefdigest, we have quite a few threads on adult movie buying... big bob orgy just came out, as well as HD dobule d's and teegan's juice and my first porn and much much more... at least 15 new releases in january on HD DVD in the porno department.
Simon P @ Feb 4th 2008 11:14AM
my god man, i hope you mean boob and not bob. the thought is too much to take
Mojo_Yugen @ Feb 4th 2008 11:27AM
"Big Bob Orgy" = Freudian slip ;)
TrentD @ Feb 4th 2008 11:47AM
Eww.
Seriously, keep up with your pron yourself. Engadget, don't listen!
Justin @ Feb 4th 2008 11:30AM
red releases = sigh...
Galley @ Feb 4th 2008 11:32AM
I've got the Cline Dion and "Across the Universe" BDs on pre-order.
Eddie @ Feb 4th 2008 11:52AM
Remember how we were talking about some things you keep to yourself? This is one of them.
Galley @ Feb 4th 2008 11:55AM
Ha Ha, good one! When I saw the cover of the Cline Dion disc, I just had to get it, hoping for some upskirt footage. ;-)
David S @ Feb 4th 2008 11:45AM
Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the most overrated movie of the year. It's an average movie, but not an IMDB 8.0. Personally it was my least favorite of the 2007 "Westerns" (No County for Old Men, 3:10 to Yuma, There Will be Blood).
Geoffrey Sperl @ Feb 4th 2008 12:58PM
IMDB scores are difficult to go off of until 18-24 months after release and emotional voting is done with (the "I love Brad Pitt! 10/10!" vs. "My skank girlfriend dragged me to this because she loves Brad Pitt. 1/10!". That's the point where they start to settle into a pattern and the voting tends to make sense.
Law of averages and the like, I'm sure...
whoelse @ Feb 4th 2008 11:52AM
wow 10 v 3!
JimC @ Feb 4th 2008 12:18PM
This is just preview as more WB titles dry up for HDDVD and other blu studios push out more catalog title. With only two major studios behind HDDVD, it is going to be difficult to match releases, both in volume and quality.
RED used to strive to break the 50% share mark, now no doubt the expectations are lower...
FreeRange @ Feb 4th 2008 12:32PM
In for Elizabeth: The Golden Age. This will be another slaughter of a week but at least there's SOMETHING good on HD-DVD.
Truth Teller @ Feb 4th 2008 12:43PM
Well 'The Assassination of Jesse James' is out on HD DVD at the end of Feb and we have several excellent HD DVD titles to look formward to - only on HD DVD.
It's just the usual lean Jan - mar (same as it was last year too).
TruthCommenter @ Feb 4th 2008 6:14PM
TruthTeller: "It's just the usual lean Jan - Mar"
Hahahaha, whoho-yeah right, ahaha, hoho
You think this is lean now, ahaha-ha-ha,
just wait till summer when you graduate high school,
aaaaaaaaaaahaa,ha,haha
you little HD-DVD hobgoblin
regeya @ Feb 5th 2008 1:47AM
Wow, an actual factual post from Truth Teller, and we have the Truth Douchebag with the bag 'o laughs.
Truth (cough) be told, I look at that lineup and think "meh." On BOTH sides. Enjoy your Jane Austen Book Club...*yawn* No, I'm not bringing that one up just to pick on Blu-Ray, but c'mon, that Jesse James movie is probably the best of the bunch, and I've heard nary a peep about the movie IRL. Not so much as an, "um, yeah, it was OK."
JimC @ Feb 4th 2008 1:00PM
@Truth Teller
Uh, are sure about the release date for HDDVD? HidefDigest has it set for March 18th release?
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/1307/assassinationofjessejames.html
Although Amazon is stating "This title will be released on February 26, 2008".
As a side note, I noticed Amazon's warning to HDDVD customers:
"Warner Bros. has announced plans to discontinue its support of the HD DVD format after May 31, 2008. See a list of Warner HD DVD titles."
Good to see responsible retailers....
Truth Teller @ Feb 4th 2008 1:02PM
Maybe it's changed, Amazon still show it as out at the end of Feb.
JimC @ Feb 4th 2008 1:05PM
DVDEmpire is showing March 18th as well...
"PRE-RELEASE: Ships when stock arrives.
Scheduled for Release on 3-18-2008 (6 weeks) "
Truth Teller @ Feb 4th 2008 1:12PM
Amazon still show this title as being scheduled for release on HD DVD on Feb 26th.
http://www.amazon.com/Assassination-Jesse-Coward-Robert-Standard/dp/B0010V616U
JimC @ Feb 4th 2008 1:43PM
Best Buy also has it for Feb 26th, doesn't matter, it is either going to be Feb 26 or March 18th, either way it is later than tomorrow...
HiFiFreak @ Feb 4th 2008 1:13PM
Just curious????
Any Blue Ray guys thinking of picking up a cheap HD DVD player?
Think about it!
- Lots of good movies that are still only coming out and have come out on HD DVD only.
- Even if and/or when Paramount/Universal make the transition to Blue ray, the previously released moves will take quite some time before they are re-released in Blue.
- You still get a bunch of pretty good movies for free.
- The way things are going, you can pick up more HD DVDs really cheap when they start clearing them out.
- At a $100 to $127 its pretty easy to justify the entertainment value even if you just used the movies that came free (7 all together).
On a side note: Does anyone know if Blue ray has any intention of renewing the free blue ray disc promotions? I really wanted to take advantage of that.
Spiza @ Feb 4th 2008 9:57PM
I've been thinking about it just to netflix movies, but I think prices might go down even more before the 5 mail in rebate stops.
Truth Teller @ Feb 4th 2008 1:23PM
HiFiFreak
They'd be better off actually coming up with a range of mass-market friendly profile 2.0 players with a decent spread of prices & specs.
So far all they have is a pretty lame game console
(which is why their claims of 'we already won' are so laughably ridiculous - they have the PS3 niche, nothing more).
They just don't seem to want to face reality, far too many of us will never put a game console in our a/v racks.
DrXym @ Feb 4th 2008 2:04PM
Grow up little girl. Blu Ray standalone sales outstrip HD DVD sales and that "niche" you wish to dismiss represents 10 million players and growing.
As for profile 2.0, it's always nice to have new features but you are deluded if you think that internet connectivity or lack thereof is a killer feature. Perhaps you'll be good enough to point to all the wonderful ways HD DVD discs use internet access? And which of them justify a regular consumer with an internet connection (therefore implying they have a computer) running an ethernet cable to the back of a movie player? The same holds true of profile 2.0 in case you're wondering.
Ted @ Feb 4th 2008 3:26PM
Truth Teller, I'm an HD-DVD supporter (but own both formats) but even I can't help but turn against you... you remind me so much of h4ld0l who used to troll for Blu-Ray. You're so aggresively defending the format that you're probably turning more people off HDDVD than you are turning on to it.
TruthCommenter @ Feb 4th 2008 3:52PM
TruthTeller: "they have the PS3 niche, nothing more"
aahahahah, you, hoooo, hoooo, haha
didn't you make that same
faulty assertion on
2/4, 2/3, 2/2, 2/1, 1/31, 1/30,
1/29, 1/28, 1/27, 1/26, 1/25, 1/24,
1/23, 1/22, 1/21, 1/20, 1/19, 1/18 . . .
ahaaa,hahaha
more disk skip, disk skip, hahaaaa
you never-a-new-thing, nonsensical gnome
Truth Teller @ Feb 4th 2008 7:13PM
@ Ted
Maybe that's the problem around here Ted.
I'm just giving my honest opinions on what I see, hear & know; I'm not here to turn people on to or off anything.
Obviously far too many are though, eh?
TruthCommenter @ Feb 4th 2008 7:21PM
TruthTeller: "I'm not here to turn people on to or off anything. Obviously far too many are though, eh"
Oooooooooh,
By Jove, I believe he's getting it!
1stGreg @ Feb 4th 2008 1:33PM
@ Lie Teller - "Lame game console" ?
Apparently people think differently than you :)
http://www.ultimateavmag.com/news/1207poty/
Check the "disc player of the year"
And .. the A30 as "budget" .. lol.
You also forget the Panny BD30K, a very good Bonus View player by all accounts, and plenty of people seem happy with their Sharp Aquos player, or their Samsung/Sony for that matter.
Plenty of new players coming in Q2 anyway, so if you really must have a BD+ profile player to be happy, that'll come.
Truth Teller @ Feb 4th 2008 1:56PM
"Bouns View"
LMAO.
More accurately -
1 half-a$$ed interim player
(through an update claimed to give full profile 1.1 abilities, which I've yet to see fully proved by anyone independent)
with all the 'extra' capability of an interactive CD.
Oooooh.
LMAO
"plenty of profile 2.0 players" eh?
Like what, hmmmmmm?
The usual ridiculously over-priced tat, the game console (with an update, so they claim), a buggy Samsung & a laughably poor Daewoo.
That's not what I'd call an impressive line-up
........oh and I'll believe it when i see it, they spent an age repeatedly delaying profile 1.1 so I've not much confidence that profile 2.0 will appear on time - I see the Denon profile 2.0 has already been repeatedly delayed.
Jove @ Feb 5th 2008 2:13PM
@ bullshit teller
didnt i tell you to get off the internet???? this isnt afterdawn where they ban whoevers against you!
RockinOscar @ Feb 4th 2008 2:20PM
*sigh*
Greg @ Feb 4th 2008 2:41PM
Pittiful Lie Teller as usual... :/ sigh
"Bouns View" ? Are you drunk?
Oh .. you tried to do some humor? O.o
As per the new BD players lineup, how about you wait for it to be here, and prices to be anounced, before you pass judgemement?
You are now but an inch from Nfinity territory in your Fanboyism man, be carreful...
Truth Teller @ Feb 4th 2008 3:16PM
@ Greg
You seem to imagine that I'm ar$ed about the digs you make against nfinity & whether you bracket me & nfinity together in your estimation.
Really, I could care less.
I respect anyone that's prepared to stand up & come here and stop this site being 100% PS3/Blu-ray.com fanboyism.
Good for him, I say.
His posts certainly beat the usual PS3 drones talking their same dreary old game console fanboy sh!te day in day out.
TruthCommenter @ Feb 4th 2008 4:32PM
TruthTeller: "I respect anyone that's prepared to [snip] stop this site being 100% PS3/Blu-ray.com fanboyism
aaaaaaaaaaaah-haaaaaaaaaaaa !
if you canned the tiresome repetition,
and argued with intellectual honesty,
maybe your respect would be worth something,
but as of now it's pretty clear
you're in this for the lulz,
and most don't take you seriously
you laughable little leprechaun
mlody11 @ Feb 4th 2008 2:45PM
I am purple... Let me tell you that I wish the BD players had faster processors or were written in something other than java... the menus are dog slow and so is the response time on fast forward etc. Granted this doesn't happen on the PS3 but thats because the damn thing has more processing power of 1/10 of a super computer...
anon @ Feb 4th 2008 3:02PM
Am I the only one who thinks rating peoples are totally pointless? Anyone who says that they like HD DVD is rated down, like Samisin's post here http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/31/national-geographic-lines-up-with-blu-ray/ Anyone who likes Blu-ray and bashes HD DVD is rated up. Over and over again. Is there a way to take those off? They are meaningless and irritating. Not to mention petty and childish. "You don't like the same thing as me, so I'm going to rate your comment down!" Wow, got him there...
DEEZNUTZ @ Feb 4th 2008 3:05PM
I just rated you down for that post.
Truth Teller @ Feb 4th 2008 3:11PM
Really, who cares?
Ted @ Feb 4th 2008 3:32PM
Yeah, but Samisin was being pretty obnoxious in that post and in the replies, it's not just because he supports HD-DVD that he got voted down. He calls Blu-Ray "Blew-ray" and he was off topic in announcing that he had bought loads of HD-DVDs. I personally can happily say that I think HD-DVD is a good format without getting voted down automatically. It's all about the tone.
david @ Feb 4th 2008 3:19PM
I think TruthTeller is the only HD-DVD supporter left
wreckedchevy @ Feb 4th 2008 3:47PM
not really i'm still here and i still think there are alot of very immature blu supporters on this group mainly jimc seems to be the ring leader. honestly i'm only as loyal to hd-dvd as my $99 investment is. I don't know anything about a/v equipment at all that's why i keep an eye on several sites highdefdigest, engadgethd, fwc, avsforum, etc. and on every site i go to somebody makes one positive opinion about hd-dvd and there 10 blu soldiers or whatever you call yourselves tearing them apart. i for one don't blame truthteller for giving you all such a hard time look at your own behavior if you had that many people ganging up on you, you would be a big diffensive as well...
Devils Advocate @ Feb 4th 2008 3:59PM
I dont consider Truth Teller to be an HD-DVD supporter. He is one of those lonely people whose sole purpose it to cause problems with other people to hide his own shortcomings. Notice how every post of his generates into "PS3 fangirls"
andy @ Feb 4th 2008 4:15PM
No, but you can only read "HD DUD is teh SUXXORS, the FUTURE is BLUE!!!!!" so many times before you just roll your eyes and quit looking at the comments.
I only look at unrated posts that aren't written by the known bluboys now. That seems to be the only true intelligence left here following the blu-ray.com invasion of 2008.
Anthony Pivac @ Feb 4th 2008 3:48PM
Well those looking for Beowulf on Blu-ray can look no further than Australia. Released 4/9.
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/798298
Distributed by Warner, so region free. Ok, so it's almost $43, but that's Australian dollars so the conversion will be cheaper for Americans & Europe. So if you really must have it might be worth import.
Cheers
