Best Buy joins the HD DVD Buy 1 Get 1 fun
Heads up, HD DVD followers -- it's not just Amazon dishing out two flicks for the price of one anymore. As of right now, Best Buy is offering up a select number of titles in BOGO fashion, but there's no sign of how long the offer will last. 'Course, it's not like the retailer hasn't given the Blu-ray camp its chance to get in on such a deal before, but apparently, big yellow is looking out for camp red today.
[Thanks, Mike K.]
Update: Seems this deal will cease to exist (if only momentarily) on Sunday. Thanks, TrentD!

Wow. Four days late on the news.

I could swear this offer is in their weekly ad for this week. Ran all week.

I'll buy a select few of these when they're selling for $10 or less after Uni and Paramount switch to Blu. No problem watching these on my HD-DVD player which will be sitting around as an upconverter for years. But it has to be a movie I'll want to watch more than once.

was kinda thinking the same thing...

What sucks is that I just bought Serenity and Supremacy on Half.com last week.

The Amazon deal is done. I'll be the first to say it; is it possible that Best Buy is clearing out the HD DVD stock?
Rog @ Jan 31st 2008 3:53PM
A Nice way for Best Buy to get rid of their HD DVD stock....
1stGreg @ Jan 31st 2008 4:01PM
Possible, indeed. BB was in general (not all stores, but apparently the majority) favoring Blu Ray 2 to 1 or more.
I guess we'll see, if they won't restock once the sale ends.
I wouldn't count on it quite just yet though. I could see them waiting for the Q1 2008 results (April) to make such a drastic decision :)
Time will tell.

Do you EVER get tired of posting nonsense. Best Buy clearing out of HD DVD? The brainwashing has hit an all time high.
Hey, go rent Invasion, since it's Warner title it might show you how brainwashed society looks like.
newguy @ Jan 31st 2008 4:19PM
Not possible on clearing out the HD DVD stock. This is VERY limited on the titles and Best Buy has has promos in the past on HD titles. It is just a sale, and a bad one at that.
wreckedchevy @ Jan 31st 2008 4:04PM
doubt they would be clearing out of hd-dvd until/if something changes with uni/paramount kinda like cc releaseing a statement that they will be continuing support of both formats
KushielsScion007 @ Jan 31st 2008 4:11PM
Sweet picking some up...
While I don't have the HD DVD player its not quite as big a hit to my pocketbook buy a few movies in anticipation.

The selection to pick from blows. Not sure why HDDVD isn't rushing Braveheart and Gladiator to HDDVD considering they are two of the biggest exclusives they have for movie buffs.
LOTR and Star Wars will be Blu-ray.
MegaZone @ Jan 31st 2008 6:25PM
Actually, I just saw this as an affiliate - at least it looks like the same thing - and according to the affiliate link page: "This promotion begins Sunday, January 27th and ends Friday, February 8th"

Wow - Who just updated Engadget's layout and totally fscked it up? Things are on top of each other now - in Firefox and IE.

Same old old old offerings we've seen before. Ya want to get some attention put "Planet Earth" on sale for $39.99. That will get my attention.
EEL @ Jan 31st 2008 6:56PM
With that kind of selection and price, I'll stick with Amazon.
kcmurphy88 @ Jan 31st 2008 8:12PM
Yeah, but Amazon starts from 30% off, not list. It is possible to get 2 $27 HD DVDs from an Amazon BOGO for $16 total, delivered.

wtf is wrong with the comment system?

Well, I went ahead and got me an HD DVD player from Amazon. I know, I know the war is over Blue Ray wins. But the way I see it is as follows:
- It was a $120 with 7 good to great movies (no matter waht I will get plenty of entertainment value)
- Warner movies will still be released until May (I think)
- Universal and Paramount are still HD DVD exclusive
- Even if and when Universal and Paramount go Blue the previously released titles will take many, many months to be re-released on Blueray
- When the end is official I can pick up some killer deals on HD DVD clearance discounts
For the record I also have every intention of getting a Blueray player as soon as there are 2.0 players available.
Anyways thats my thought process.
