Comcast dishing out eight new HD options in Central Pennsylvania
A month after Comcast showed just how much it appreciated those subscribers parked in the Southeast, it's apparently getting set to show the same courtesy to those in Central Pennsylvania. While actual locations in which new HD channels are scheduled to appear are still unclear, we are hearing that State College and surrounding locales will soon be enjoying A&E HD, HGTV HD, Food Network HD, TBS HD, USA HD, Discovery Channel HD, TLC HD and Sci-Fi Channel HD. Reportedly, customers will have to have at least the Expanded Basic Service level to indulge in these fine offerings, and it's also noted that MHD and MOJO HD are being added to the same lineup in Adams and York counties. The proposed go-live date? None other than February 14th -- how heartwarming.

Damnit, there are a ton of people in Jersey waiting for these channels. Bring them here! I want my SCI-FI and Discovery Channel in high definition!!!!!
John B @ Jan 29th 2008 3:21PM
YES!!!!!!!!!
I've been waiting for Discovery HD, TLC HD, and Sci-Fi HD! If the Food Channel HD is also in that lineup, my wife will be wanting me to get a second HD box for our main TV.
I'm still waiting for Verizon FiOS TV to be given the ok from the borough. Then we'll see. But for now, this is most certainly going to fill in Comcast's lack of decent HD programming in my area, although MHD and MOJO are pretty good.

Huntsville, Alabama Comcast users have had these channels for at least 2 months. I'm tired of the Comcast commerical that brags about how many HD channels they have (several times more than DirecTV). Comcast counts VoD channels as HD channels.
End users don't really care about channels. They care about content. DirecTV has much more HD content. Who wants to watch the same movie over and over?
I'm considering jumping over to DirecTV and getting a USB-tuner for my Windows Media Center computer. Then I'll have Windows Media Center on each TV in the house (with XBOX 360's functioning as extenders). If I dump Comcast, I can pay for the deployment of equipment in less than two years and have a home media server dishing out all my media to all my displays.
After waiting two years for the Comcast TiVo. I still don't have it. Those that do claim that it is disappointing.
Comcast: give me more content or I'm gone.

I don't think anyone actually enjoys TBS HD unless 24-7 upconverted turner distort-o-vision is your thing. It's a true mystery why they will simulcast TNT HD and TBS HD but, only show the HD version on TNT.
The others are solid additions.

Central PA cow country (+ Harrisburg) before Philadelphia? What is this mess?
(No offense, John B)

My guess: lower population = lower bandwidth maximization, assuming that the proper infrastructure is in place = better guinea pigs.
This is exactly why we got DSL in this area before it was rolled out to a lot of the major cities in the area. (I was told this directly from the Verizon tech who came out to install it.) We're large enough that they have a sufficient number of people to work out any kinks in the system, but small enough that any problem won't necessarily result in the slew of calls that would come in from a major metropolitan.
And no offense taken as I'm actually from Scranton (coal country!!) although "cow country" is a bit melodramatic. ;)
Patrick @ Jan 29th 2008 3:52PM
Yeah, I thought of that too. Probably also means that everyone and his mom will have access to FiOS before me.
We do have Food and TBS HD already (the latter comes in handy for baseball season; I'm a Braves guy), but I'm dying for Discovery and USA.
Chris72b9 @ Jan 29th 2008 4:38PM
I'm in Southeast PA and I haven't seen SciFi HD or Discovery HD yet. I also anticipate when The History Channel HD hits the boxes.
I'm dying to see 'The Universe' in HD.
Tucker @ Jan 29th 2008 9:26PM
Here's hoping they'll stretch it a little more east. Though judging by the quality of my cable modem service here in Scranton, I don't think they've got enough bandwidth to be adding to the HD channel lineup any time soon. Dying for Discovery and SciFi
John B @ Jan 30th 2008 8:21AM
Actually, if you RTFA that this links to you'll see that Scranton, Dunmore, and Dallas are on the list.
I don't know 'bout Dickson, but I assume dat dey be gettin' a coupa two tree channels, too, heyna? ;) Long live Old Forge style pizza!

blah... i want USA HD, Discovery Channel HD, TLC HD and Sci-Fi Channel HD in southeast pa... wtf... comcast is based in philadelphia and they can't even hook up the philadelphia people first? on top of that no more HDO HD on demand... = bolonga

Comcast brags about the HD new stations we will get in State College. What they don't say is that will still do not get CBS in HD. I would much rather have CBS in HD that the HGTV.
Scott @ Feb 5th 2008 4:38PM
Has anyone heard when some of these channels are going to be available in Philly? I really want the USA HD channel!
Kevin @ Feb 16th 2008 12:57PM
I'm in Reading. Nothing yet.
Bill T. @ Feb 16th 2008 11:49PM
It's 2/17 and I still haven't received these new channels here in State College. And I agree, they can chuck all these 8 new channels for 1-CBS. What's up with that?!
Carmen @ Mar 7th 2008 12:04PM
I'm in montgomery county near pottstown, pa. I don't know what is wrong with comcast. They say they are the best with that BS - More, More, More. I want SCIFI HD and the rest. If DTV and Dish can get it why can't the "best more more more" morons get it?
sweep dh @ Mar 30th 2008 2:09PM
Bucks Pa, Montgomery, etc. Comcast has run out of bandwith to support those hd channels. their bandwith stops at 750 mhz. while most other cable companies are and have been to 870mhz and 1ghz. my belief is that, and this is through the grapevine, that when comcast does upgrade, they plan to put those hd's in the high band. in my opinion this will cause major problems with said channels, being these frequencies tend to see the most problems in common wear and tear, ie. old, or bad cable, poor grounding, and malfunctioning equiptment.
