Upscaling improves the impact of SD on HD screens, yes. And there are low end-and high-end upscalers. No doubt Toshiba offers good upscaling considering it's ultra-low price point. But High-end upscaling it is not. And Blu-Ray-players offers the same upscaling.

Free hardware and free software has turned HD DVD into a non-profit organization, and 2007 must have been a good year for HD DVD supporters, showered with freebies from Toshiba and Hollywood alike. But the party is over.

For HD to go mainstream, we need all HD-enthusiasts to pull in one direction and win over the mass market. For this to happen, we need to let HD DVD die. And we don't have oceans of time. Sooner or later downloads will replace physical media. But the time isn't right yet. The bitrates and resolution of every on-demand-service planned is vastly inferior to that of Blu-Ray. And regardless of what certain fanboys have maintained, lower bitrates translates to lower audio and video quality.

The window of opportunity to replace DVD with a HD physical medium will close within the next 20 to 30 months. Blu-Ray must go mainstream before this happens. HD-enthusiasts must all work together to help bring about this change, or else we will have to wait a LONG time for the same quality to come our way again.

Hans Martin

Comments on Gartner: Blu-ray to win in 2008, HD DVD price cuts are "useless resistance"

Agreed. I have lots of ripped content on my PS3 that renders great in HD. And in saying that, I don't think I'd buy much in HD unless the price difference over DVD is small. There are very few movies that scream out for HD so studios are going to have to stop thinking people are stupid when they set their prices. In Europe the prices range from expensive to ridiculous. There are some movies selling for 50 euros, not even good movies and I have to wonder who the morons are who buy them.

DrXym

Comments on Gartner: Blu-ray to win in 2008, HD DVD price cuts are "useless resistance"

Anybody thinking that HD DVD is dead or they are on the way out are clearly in a delusional state. With having to know the difference in profiles (1.0, 1.1, & 2.0) and whether your player will play all the profiles or you need to get a firmware upgrade or buy another player all together is annoying. It's what's mostly kept me away from Blue. I also don't like the way they display the movies the Red camp seems more natural to me (my opinion), looks crisp and clear with no imperfections, while the Blue looks crisp and clear but there are the ocassional imperfections. At first I thought it was me, but as more and more of my friends noticed it we didn't know if it was the PS3 or simply Blue. A little research and elbow greese and we discovered is simply the way the format deals with movies, so my opinion is I prefer Red, if Red dies I will go back to traditional DVDs.

Miacol

Comments on Gartner: Blu-ray to win in 2008, HD DVD price cuts are "useless resistance"

Wow where do you get your info. Lets be honest price doesn’t mean as much as movies when you are talking about a MOVIE FORMAT!!. the sooner you realize that the better for yourself because I could care a less about what format I buy I am in it for the movies. I know exactly what I got myself into. I just bought a blu-ray player because I want to watch movies and honestly I have to ask myself how many HD-DVD's I will be buying in the future seeing that there are no exclusives outside of American Gangster that have been announced that I am remotely interested in. Is that Toshibas fault no. Its just Paramount and Universal are releasing nothing and the movies I want to watch from them are all pretty much Spielberg flicks so I wont hold my breath. Also what is with the HD-DVD exclusive Jack Ryan collection finally coming out with a big go !@#$ yourself I mean no extra features on a HD release seem just lazy. The only thing Toshiba is doing right now is fooling people who dont know any better to invest in a new way to watch movies on their HD TV's. The only problem is I think you need to have movies being released on your format to do that. But I dont see them warning the average consumer that what they got might be about all they are going to get.

luvincharity

Comments on Gartner: Blu-ray to win in 2008, HD DVD price cuts are "useless resistance"

HD DVD has been victimised?!? Neither 1.1 or 2.0 adds much and all discs are going to be backwards compatible. It's funny people are not moaning that USB 2.0 adds features over USB 1.1 or 1.0. Or that Bluetooth 2.0 adds features over Bluetooth 1.0. Why? Because these standards are backwards compatible, just like Blu Ray.

All the fud and bullshit about the issue seems to emanate from HD DVD promoters. There is no possible way that HD-DVD can compete. If Blu-ray's market is so small at this point - compared to DVDs, that's irrelevant anyway. It's like comparing film cameras to digital cameras. But as Steve Jobs pointed out the other day, it is probably going to be a hollow victory, because bandwidth increases are going to make movie downloads the future. As soon as they let us burn them to DVD if we buy. But who wants to buy a disc for $30 when you can get a download for $4. How many times will you watch "The Green Mile." Or "Daddy Day Camp?" Well, on the latter, that would be never for me. I'll probably watch some movies 10 times each before I die. Most likely I'll have them in Blu-ray.
