Charter adding three new HD channels to St. Louis, Missouri lineup
Just over a month after AT&T wired St. Louis, Missouri up with U-verse access, Charter Communications is (softly) hitting back by introducing three new high-definition options to the local lineup. Reportedly, Discovery Channel HD, The Weather Channel HD and Versus / Golf Channel HD will be available for viewing as of January 30th, but our tipster notes that CBS is still unavailable in HD. Can't win 'em all, right?[Thanks, Anthony]

No CBS (sigh)? How can a cable company NOT have at least the major networks in HD? I have Charter in Connecticut and we're still waiting for ABC and CW (we do get CBS). My understand is that it has to do with the fact that ABC wants Charter to pay extra for the HD version while the other networks provide the HD feed for free (true?). Is this just a Charter problem or do lots of other cable providers skimp on networks? I'd rather have ABC than Mojo... or whatever other nitch crap they're adding next.

Same problem with CBS in St. Louis. CBS wants Charter to pay, and Charter doesn't want to pass the cost on to their customers. I think I'm on Charter's side. The CBS signal is free OTA, why should Charter have to pay to redistribute it. I think it hurts CBS more than Charter.

Shouldn't CBS be carried due to "Must Carry" rules? With NTSC going away next year, how will CBS come in?

I wouldn't think the "must carry" rule implies they have to carry the HD version, just the SD, even when TV goes all digital.

they have the SD version.
I say forget all the providers though. I pick up the big four plus the WB and someone else in HD with my 50 dollar radioshack antenna about 20 miles from downtown. It's hard to beat an antenna and a TIVO S3/HD if you live near a metro area.

You can actually preview the Discovery HD and Golf HD on channels 115-1 and 115-2. They come through unencrypted through basic cable line to the TV. Must be using them to test it.

Yes, as a matter of fact the new tv's have a tuner capable of decoding the HD broadcasts. They live in the lower 100s. Just like the over the air HD sigs live on 5.1, 5.2, etc, Charter has them on the likes of 105-1,-2. I'm looking for a lineup on the internet but can't find one. IF anyone has done this for St. Louis, please mail me one. :))
