Believe it or not, you've but eight days (and a few hours) to settle on where you'll be watching Super Bowl XLII, and if the answer is your living room, is your current setup the one you'll be running with? Around this time each year here in the US of A, retailers start cramming ideas in your head in order to convince you that your existing HDTV just isn't cut out for "the big game," so we're wondering just how many of you are choosing now to upgrade? Oh, and if you're sticking with whatever you've got, don't hesitate to shout it out proudly in comments below.

You forgot the last and fourth choice "No"
There are still people who don't own an HDTV for a number of reasons, including cost.
Christopher Wilson @ Jan 26th 2008 12:15PM
You forgot the "Who cares about a stupid super bowl?" option.
feser99 @ Jan 26th 2008 12:21PM
Yeah I did not buy mine for the "Big Dance" (sorry I am not an offical partner of the NFL an am not authroized to say Super Bowl TM). I bought it for a better reason a PS3.
John @ Jan 26th 2008 12:18PM
Also, the TVs will be one clearance after the game... so that is when I am picking mine up!
grimmbob @ Jan 26th 2008 12:28PM
Well I just entered the real HD world this week, but not intentionally to time it for the game. Rec room is now rocking a 60" Pioneer Elite plasma with accompanying AVR and speakers... So now I'm actually obliged by the code to have people over for the big game. Which means I have to start shopping for beverages and fried foods now I guess... See ya!
Bob Cook @ Jan 26th 2008 12:29PM
I have a 25 inch analogue T.V. It will have to do. The costs of a larger HDTV hasn't come down enough for me to indulge myself yet. But I will be watching the game, and I will have my popcorn. Does anybody have any chips?
Dark Morford @ Jan 26th 2008 12:38PM
I've been meaning to buy an HDTV for a couple of months now. I'm just waiting for the set I want (Samsung LN-T3253H) to come down to $799 or so like it was /before/ Black Fridayit jumped up to $999 on Thanksgiving and hasn't come back down since.
zargon @ Jan 26th 2008 12:40PM
The Superbowl is no reason to buy a new TV, HD or not, it isn't even worth it. The game usually sucks not to mention it usually consists of teams I could care less about (I really only care that the stupid Patriots lose), the commercials overall have become a major yawn feast and the half time show is less exciting than watching paint dry.
I bought my HDTVs for movies, that right there, is the big reason to buy one.
Larry @ Jan 26th 2008 12:44PM
I did not, but my friend bought hers in time for the game.
MadMike @ Jan 26th 2008 12:58PM
Already have a two week old 1080p Optoma projector, FiOS HD DVR, 40Gb PS3, Toshiba HD-A30 HD-DVD player and a 1200watt 5.1 Denon receiver with custom 12" Adire Audio Shiva sub (250watt) & custom speakers.
Enthralled @ Jan 26th 2008 1:06PM
Well, we bought one, and it's installed, but it was more bought because we just got Fios TV vs. having it for the Super Bowl. We just took advantage of the sales.
UnnDunn @ Jan 26th 2008 1:17PM
I think the more important question is whether Engadget HD or its parent companies have the express written consent of the NFL to use its registered trademarks "Super Bowl", "Super Bowl XLII" and the associated logomark.
Andy Anonymous @ Jan 26th 2008 1:38PM
My HDTV is less than a year old, so it'll do just fine. Can't wait for the big game...go Pats!
Peter @ Jan 26th 2008 3:03PM
My TV is almost 5 years old now, and I'm scheduled for my next ISF calbration a couple of days before the game. I'll be happy to watch on my TV rather than on some TV set up by a misguided Geek Squad teen who thinks the TV should be on "sports" or "dynamic" mode with the sharpness turned up.

"You forgot the last and fourth choice "No"

Ummmm...Engadget HD. It's not Engadget SD. It's only HD related for a reason. Just saying..
John B @ Jan 26th 2008 5:55PM
So, even if you're interested in HD you can't partake in EngadgetHD unless you already own HD hardware? That's one of the dumbest and elitist things I've heard since the last Blu-ray/HD DVD thread. Just saying.
Matthew Berg @ Jan 26th 2008 11:12PM
There are a number of us who research (including following internet forums) *before* we spend a large hunk of money on consumer electronics. Just sayin'.
worstepisodeever @ Jan 26th 2008 4:05PM
Oceanic Time Warner Cable in Hawaii won't install CableCards and sell their HD package since they're running SDV. So why even bother picking up an HDTV at this point since their "DVR" HD box is flunky and loses your recordings on a regular basis. Big NO here.
Student Driver @ Jan 26th 2008 5:47PM
Another option should have been "I'm using the Super Bowl to get a TV on sale (or price match one I just got)," as many people will pick them up due to better pricing. We just got a Samsung LN-T4671 and it's awesome. I am just waiting to see if the unit will drop below $2499 so I can do another price match.
mcamca @ Jan 26th 2008 5:48PM
I just don't get it. Why would anyone upgrade their TV to watch bowling? Is this some sort of American thing? *shakes head*
John B @ Jan 26th 2008 5:53PM
Sadly, yes. It's the one time of the year where the need to look manly (re: an unnecessary surge of testosterone) overrides the need to think in terms of logic. For some reason, the Super Bowl makes far too many guys somehow relate TV size with penis size, which is why there is always some maddening surge to increase the size of the TV, lest he be condemned as having both a small TV and a small willie.
Why, yes, I do think that the hype around the Super Bowl is ridiculous. Why do you ask?
VP @ Jan 26th 2008 8:02PM
Maybe John you have a problem with your penis. I am just looking for a good time to purchase an LCD and i this is indeed a good time.
I am getting a sony KDL46v3000 from Sams for less than $1700 tomorrow.
John B @ Jan 27th 2008 12:03AM
"Maybe John you have a problem with your penis."
*yawn* Yeah, really original. Wake me up when you actually have something witty to say.
William @ Jan 27th 2008 8:37PM
Bought a Samsung LN-T5271. I love the damn thing.
david farmer @ Jan 29th 2008 10:54AM
I had planned on buying a new 52" LCD this week, and so far the deals absolutely suck. No good prices at BestBuy/CircuitCity/HHGregg, no freebies, nada. I'd love to purchase locally, in case there are any issues, but the big guys don't even seem to be trying to win my business.
Hopefully there will be a Friday/Sat/Sunday blow-out sale to bring me shopping
ProfStevie @ Jan 31st 2008 1:30AM
How about "I couldn't care less about football, but am planning on stalking Craigslist in the days after the game to take some football fan's HDTV off their hands after they realize they couldn't really afford it"? :)
Jinn35 @ Feb 5th 2008 9:37PM
still using the old 2003 mitsubishi WS-A55, Hell yeah!
