Verizon celebrates two years of FiOS in New York
Merely months after Verizon dusted off the party hats to celebrate two years of FiOS nationwide, it's throwing an extra special party for the Empire State. As of today, FiOS TV has been available in at least some portions of New York for two whole years, and including the new areas that VZW reached out to last month, over 145 communities can now tap into its fiber-based TV service. Now, watch as the vast majority of the nation forces a grin and congratulates you on having something that we don't.

WHY ISNT FIOS AVAILABLE IN MANHATTAN?
Marshall @ Jan 24th 2008 4:54PM
Because the wiring infrastructure would be a nightmare and the labor costs ridiculous. I *heart* NYC.
Kiwi616 @ Jan 24th 2008 4:55PM
And nothing in Queens yet either....maybe next year???
tranzparentl @ Jan 24th 2008 4:55PM
I'm right outside of Albany, NY and no FiOS for me yet. =(
Matt @ Jan 25th 2008 6:22PM
Anyone know if Verizon FiOS TV will be hitting the Chicago area (including suburbs) anytime soon?
JP23 @ Jan 24th 2008 9:34PM
@Matt
How does NEVER sound to you? Verizon doesn't service our area.
mcss1985 @ Jan 24th 2008 6:07PM
I don't understand what Engadget's obsession with FIOS is. I understand (kinda) reporting when a locale get FIOS, but why does every single article on the subject have the tone that its the best thing since sliced bread. I had FIOS and couldn't stand it. I went to Dish and couldn't be happier, but even if I didn't jump on the DBS bandwagon I woulda dropped FIOS like a bad habbit for good old fashioned Cable. I realize that this is my opinion and opinions are like well you know what, but I just don't see the attraction at all.
What am I missing?!?

Well, unlike all the satellite networks (and some cable networks), FiOS doesn't compress their HD signals, and unlike all cable companies, they aren't ridiculously overpriced. Personally, I got more HD channels (and better quality on my SD channels) from FiOS than i did from Comcast.
mcss1985 @ Jan 24th 2008 11:00PM
I will agree with you that the SD channels do look much better than on cable (like anyone watches SD channels:) ), but at least in my area it is not cheaper than cable at all, actually about $15 more per month for exact same everything.

No Fios here in brooklyn
Spektre @ Jan 24th 2008 8:41PM
FIOS is pretty cool - it's Verizon that SUCKS A$$.
Dayton Guy @ Jan 24th 2008 8:45PM
To sn1per:
With our digital cable we receive over 15 channels in HD for free...
We just had to swap to a HD-DVR from a SD-DVR which was free without a contract... HD channels including CBS, FOX, ABC, PBS, ESPN, ESPN 2, A&E, History, Food Network, HGTV, HD Theater, and some others...
We also get the #1 HD network in the world!!! TBS HD... yeah right.
ha!

As someone has said..."Those who have FiOS love it, those that don't hate it."
Everything is better on FiOS, especially compared to monopolistic Cablevision's lackluster service. The TV is probably the best part of the deal, and later this year, FiOS will have 150 HD channels (http://newscenter.verizon.com/press-releases/verizon/2007/verizon-plans-fivefold.html)
The internet is just as sweet, with faster packages to begin with and I get my 20/5 mbps all of the time, instead of slowing down with the neighbors as cable does. I know it's not available anywhere, but if you get it, you'll love it.
Notung @ Jan 25th 2008 7:23AM
Damn u!, these boys knew too little about concurrency problems with cable
Now they'll have nightmares...
Cable will suck in less than a year as our bandwidth needs increase
P.s.: Nice point
mcss1985 @ Jan 24th 2008 11:04PM
To Sniper: I agree that the SD channels do look a lot better on FIOS than cable -not much better than DBS but still better. However I don't agree with the price at least not in my area, FIOS is about $15 more than Cox for same services
To Chris: I hate FIOS because I had it. I loved (or thought I loved) FIOS before I got it. Once I got it, the hate began.
scaught @ Jan 25th 2008 7:58AM
FiOS is a taunting bastard. Seriously, they run Verizon FiOS ads all the time during the local news. Yet it isn't available anywhere in my area. Why do they hate us so?
Matt @ Jan 27th 2008 12:12AM
JP23,
Do you know for sure they are never coming to the Chicago area or saying that in disappointment? lol
Rob @ Apr 2nd 2008 2:44PM
WHY GOD HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME.
In staten island, all I get is the internet service, which is phenomenal. But Time warner or the mayor.. or satan himself just forbids me to have the TV service. I want Time Warner out of my life so badly and I still can't make that happen
