Albany, New York CBS affiliate (WRGB) begins broadcasting news in HD
Nary a month after TWC subscribers in New York's capital city received a welcome helping of new HD options, along comes word that its local CBS affiliate (WRGB) has flipped the switch on news in high-definition. As of last week, Channel 6 is now airing newscasts in high-def, but reportedly, it may not have the edge in the area for long. Rene LaSpina, general manager at WTEN (ABC affiliate) Channel 10, was quoted as saying that it was "definitely going to do it," and also noted that "everybody in the country has plans to [go high-def]." Shame those "plans" haven't materialized in but a few cities across the nation, eh?

Albany representin'!!!!! Now only if TWC Albany could get me more HD channels, fix their audio problems, and move over to MPEG-4, life would be sweet. Oh yeah, and ADD NESN!!!!!!

My guess is they were waiting for DTV to give us the HD Locals. We got them - FINALLY - on 1/3. WRGB followed suit the next week! They are an historic station, so it makes sense that they'd be the first in the area. Glad to see Channel 10 will be stepping up. The other two can't be far behind either! F'n A!!

Oh, and I only watch Channel 6 now for local news. Because it's in HD, and no other reason! I'm sure I'm not the only one!!

Interestingly enough, WRGB was the first TV station that I ever viewed. Back in the 50's it was on Channel 4 and it opened a life-long interest in technology for me. Congrats WRGB...great to see you're still the leader in the area.

Here's a question for everyone - is Fox 23 broadcasting OTA digital yet? Last I checked there was a dispute over the frequency, but I've been using cable for the past three years.
WRGB is a pretty historic station - one of the first ever, among other honors. And Rachael Ray started out with a "30 minute meals" segment on the station, too. I'm not surprised they'd be the first in the area to broadcast news in HD.
I should send them a resume or something.

The first TV station: http://www.cbs6albany.com/sections/wrgb/history/
I grew up in the area, my high school was just down the street from there offices on Balltown Road in Niskayuna.

Should we be expecting a news post for every station the converts to HD? I don't really think this is news.

Why comment then?
Do you want us to commend you for your insight?

It's news if you live in that market. And w/ most markets still not having even one local news station broadcasting in HD, it's still news about HD progress in general. But mostly, it's an alert for the local market served.

Channel 5 here in Boston now does news in hidef, and I watch them over other stations entirely because of it.
