Samsung BD-UP5000 finally fixed?
If you hedged your format war bets by picking up a Samsung BD-UP5000, chances are you've been disappointed by two things since unboxing your switch-hitting disc spinner. First, the format war may be over. Second, the BD-UP5000 has been plagued by problems in the field. Samsung has been promising a firmware update to the unit to address the problems, and it looks like it's now here (right on schedule for the promised mid-January delivery, we might add). Since we don't have one of these units at Engadget HD HQ, we can't confirm the firmware actually makes good on all the promises made on the unit's "fact tag," so sound off below and let us know!
[Thanks, chris m!]
Update: Confirmed on our loaner unit -- some issues with BD-J and BD+, but no new multi-channel audio support. C'mon Samsung, deliver the promised goods!

I updated mine tonight, and it didn't help me at all. I still cannot play all 4 Die Hard bluray movies. I just get a red screen that says I need to update my players firmware.
Bleh, Samsung still has work to do!

Red screen?? Hmmmm, maybe there is a subliminal message there somewhere! :)

I'll do the one at work tomorrow just before i hit the floor, i've got everything i need there to test it as far as gear/media goes. Then, when i get home i'll do mine and test it out here too.

HUH? What do you mean you don't have one at HQ, Ben posted the unboxing of it just a couple of days ago!!.. So get cracking...

Samsung has released pure junk since the format war began.
I waited and waited until a good 1.1 player came out... The Panny BD30... awesome machine.
locke6854 @ Jan 18th 2008 7:51AM
except the panny's poor scaling and deinterlacing.
in fact... every player but the ps3 and xa2 seem to have those problems... and poor HQV results.
There is no perfect player yet... sad.
Ron @ Jan 18th 2008 9:19AM
I agree with locke6854...it's just that every player so far has a glitch somewhere.
Quietly waiting on the sidelines with my $$$..
kcmurphy88 @ Jan 18th 2008 11:29AM
The Panny cannot play any HD DVD disc, and never will. So, as a dual-format machine it's not even in the running.
Dual-format machines are for people who have large HD DVD collections (or want to buy cheap HD movies), want to also have blu-ray (now that the war is over), and do NOT want 2 players for any of several reasons (e.g. type of inputs, lack of inputs, simplicity for household members).

I had the Samsung BD-p1200 and after all the problems it has and still is not fixed. I am sending it back to Amazon for a 80% refund. I have purchased a PS3 (media PC) and I am blown away by its performance and other features. Other than the case, the PS3 media PC is awesome, I can live with the case because everything else it does is golden...
I specifically purchased the PS3 media PC for use as a blu-ray player, the fact it plays games to is a bonus. Other features I am finding out is it can store media such as photos and videos and play them back and more, I found it intereting that there is an "Install other OS" option. Apparently, you can install linux??? What a platform! for $399 I get an awesome blu-ray player that has media PC features and plays games and has the potential for many future upgrades....Anyone who dismisses the PS3 as "just a game console" hasn't seen it in action...

I've been waiting for the price of this particular player to drop below $200 before buying (we're a Samsung family), but it sounds like it is more trouble than it's worth. What is a good Blu-Ray player then? I'm still waiting for prices to come down (in the meantime, I'll enjoy my cheap HD-DVD player), but when I do buy, I want it to be something good.

Wait for the Panasonic BD50. It'll be out Q2 2008. It's the first Profile 2.0 player and can decode and bitstream ALL of the high def codecs. It'll probably retail for $500 though. If you are willing to wait a year or two it'll probably get down to $200.
Shawn Dover @ Jan 18th 2008 10:36AM
The new firmware does not add the promised audio capabilities -- still no bitstreaming or decoding of ANY advanced audio formats.
kcmurphy88 @ Jan 18th 2008 11:16AM
1) Samsung has stated that this release only fixes some compatibility issues, notably those with newer uses of BD-J and BD+. Most of the reported problems with particular blu-ray discs are now fixed.
2) Samsung has also stated that the addition of full support for advanced audio codecs (both bitstream and internal) will not happen until the second quarter (May?). This is believed to be due to Broadcom's drivers for their chip being incomplete.
3) Die Hard 1 worked for me even before the update, as do all the earlier Fox movies people have problems with. These issues seem to be configuration dependent and due to BD+ having issues with particular hardware. This may now be fixed for some users and not for others. Hard to tell when a "sometimes" problem is improved.
In any event being all upset that #2 hasn't magically happened yet, despite Samsung saying it wouldn't, is irrational. Not that there isn't a lot of that going around.
kcmurphy88 @ Jan 18th 2008 11:21AM
By the way, when a studio ships a movie that their tests show does not work on some players -- due to newer features (like BD+ or BD-J 1.1) they chose to use -- is this the player maker's problem or the studio's?
If a studio knows a disc won't play on a player and they don't tell anyone, is this legal?
Does anyone actually certify blu-ray compliance before the logo can be applied?
andy @ Jan 18th 2008 2:31PM
Are you shilling for HDDVD now or something?
you're just parroting the HDDVD talking points.
EJNelly @ Jan 18th 2008 6:45PM
Well, those are some good talking points. I was thinking about this at work today. With all the problems HDM players are having with playing HDM discs, why should J6P to purchase an HDM player?
If BD+ and BD-J are the problem are they worth the trouble? Might make downloadable content take off, or possibly make people stick with DVD.
Camperton @ Jan 18th 2008 11:19PM
It's a valid question. That can not be denied.
kcmurphy88 @ Jan 18th 2008 11:33AM
Note on the update: You should be bashing Broadcom, not Samsung. The LG BH200 has the same chip and also lacks the same codecs. It's Broadcom that hasn't met their spec yet.
shawnmos @ Jan 18th 2008 1:35PM
I'm still waiting on an update for the Samsung BD-P1200.
Nik @ Feb 9th 2008 5:02PM
I tried the update and it made no difference with Sunrise and Unforgiven, both would lock the player up so that it had to be unplugged. With the 30 day return date bearing down on me, I decide not to wait for Samsung to get it's ass in gear and returned the unit. Swapped it for a top of the line Sony BD player, still had problems with 3:10 to Yuma and Invasion, but a firmware update fixed that. ave to say I'm very disappointed so far in the compatibility issues with BD, you'd think that Sony at least would be able to deliver a player just works.
