Oprah Winfrey gets her own channel, will simulcast in HD
If you thought Oprah Winfrey was big time currently, get a load of this. Starting sometime in 2009, the talk show superstar will launch her own network, which will unsurprisingly be dubbed The Oprah Winfrey Network. Apparently, Discovery will be handing over its Discovery Health channel "to be rebranded as OWN" and simulcast in high-definition, and seeing that the joint venture will be evenly split between Discovery and Harpo, no cash will be involved. Wondering what kind of content to expect? Look for programming aimed at inspiring, entertaining and empowering viewers -- whatever that means.

I never thought there would be a channel that I DIDN'T want in HD until now. Who the hell wants to see Oprah in HD? What a nightmare!

Oprah's going to eat the Discovery Health channel?

Respect her gangster. She sold the other channel she owned for $925 million & acquired a BASIC cable channel for a website 3 months later. THAT'S GANGSTER.

I did think she already had a channel, but I can't find any references to it.

Oprah is known to be a huge blu-ray supporter and fanatic of HD content.

off topic, troll boy... oprah having an HDTV channel has nothing to do with Blu-ray... This should be good for housewives/househusbands... Maybe it can even be good for working people if they give her on demand content on cable.

Seriously, why do men (a species to which I belong), especially geeky ones, hate Oprah?
Let's see, she's a female minority Billionaire who is known as one of the most prolific philanthropists. That means she calls out to Libertarians (who surely must appreciate her business savvy) and socialists (who appreciate her obvious willingness to, you know, give).
So, what's the deal? I'm just curious, why do people 'hate' Oprah? Is it just because it's the "in thing" to do? Or is it because she's feminine, or empowers women, or.. or what?

Probably because her show is awful and appeals to annoying fat housewives who need some fat bitch to tell them how to think.
Jean @ Jan 16th 2008 6:39AM
My wife is going to be pissed. She loves the Discovery Health channel.
Harry DeBusk @ Jan 16th 2008 9:57AM
@ BobS: Yup. That's right.
Too bad; I like Discovery Health and think it serves an educational purpose. Oprah is nothing but a cleaned-up version of Springer - same salacious content, but without the boob-flashing. Oh, and they have that moron Dr. Phil.
A shame.
