Cisco reveals 8500HDC DVR set-top-box series
We knew full well that Cisco would be axing the Scientific Atlanta brand, so it shouldn't come as any surprise to you to see a new series of STBs emerge at CES with a shiny Cisco logo gracing the front. The 8500HDC DVR series will include the 8550HDC (analog and digital tuning support), the 8540HDC (digital-only tuning support) and the 8552HDC (optional MoCA support, enabling Ethernet-over-coax). Furthermore, the trio promises to deliver "internet and premium content services," instant messaging support and a "richer media experience" to boot. As it stands, we aren't sure when the general public will be able to get their hands on any of the new boxes, but Cisco does claim that they're now "commercially available for its service provider customers." Gross - I thought switching away from Scientific Atlanta's name would also include hiring an actual product designer - that is a NASTY looking box. Who would want that in their stack?
Moto's newest boxes (don't remember the model number) look really nice - why can't all set top box manufacturers actually put together a decent looking box?

Screw what it looks like, I want TWC to pick this box up ASAP. The 8300HDC is the most horrible and buggy STB I've ever used. Hopefully this revision will fix some of it's issues and make it faster.

It's not the box that's buggy. It's the Navigator software that runs on it.
Andrew @ Jan 14th 2008 8:29PM
That's very true, a large part of it is the software, however the box is too slow to run the software as well I believe because a lot of menus are very slow. That's mainly because it's java based. I can only hope that with a new box, it will be faster and also have a decent revision to the software.

Why the hurry?? Time Warner will just ruin it with their crap software anyway.

"available for its service provider customers"
What about available to average consumers so they don't have to rent from the service provides?

Does TWC have different software in different markets? TWC had terrible software laden w/ ads and it was EXTREMELY slow when I would visit my Mom's in Houston. In Austin, while it is definitely outdated and needs improvement, it got the job done and didn't even compare to how bad Houston's software was. After Comcast bought TWC in Houston, they upgraded the software to what was already in Austin, and added many more HD channels than Austin has. That being said, I've been holding out for a new HD DVR since I got my TV two years ago. This upgrade is long over due. Now I want to know what sort of capacity it is going to have!

Yes. She probably has the new "Navigator" software. It is a stinking pile of crap. They are still piloting it in certain markets.
I know that the city council of Lincoln, Nebraska opened an investigation into Time Warner for not providing an acceptable level of service in its franchise area.
