Stargate Atlantis: S1 appears on Amazon... in Blu-ray format
We know, a fair chunk of you are wondering why Stargate Atlantis: Season 1 turning up on Amazon in Blu-ray form is a big deal. Here's the skinny: the aforementioned program is a Sci-Fi original, and Sci-Fi just so happens to be owned by NBC Universal. Got all that? Now, let's flash back to just days ago -- Universal's HD DVD exclusivity contract expired and we heard through the grapevine that it was planning on following Warner (owned by Time Warner, which also owns Engadget's parent companies) to the Blu side of life. If you still haven't pieced this all together, this listing is just another crumb of mounting evidence that Universal could indeed be ditching HD DVD in the not-too-distant future, but until we hear anything official, we suppose we'll just have to pretend there's no rustling going on in the background.

Update: Turns out the series is owned by MGM / Sony, which clicks with Blu-ray. Our bad!

If that is a mistake, Amazon needs to fix it ASAP.

the stargate series is owned by mgm.... thus a bluray release.
shawnmos @ Jan 14th 2008 4:06PM
this is correct.
Fundi @ Jan 14th 2008 12:39PM
Not that surprising seeing as stargate atlantis is made by mgm and mgm is owned by sony.

To be fair, to all sides involved, Amazon has listed TONS of crap that6 have never appeared on the market.
Just for the record:
You could find place holders for Lord of the Rings for HD DVD/Blu-ray
You could find placehodlers for the Indiana Jones movies on HD.
You could find a placeholder for "The Complete Star Trek collection".
These types of things are always getting put up and taken down. No idea why. . .
Also, like aaron said, Stargate Atalntis is distributed by MGM, not Universal. It would be like Scrubs (NBCs doctor/comedy show), if it were to ever make it to an HD disc it would be on Blu-ray. Why? Because it is distributed by Buena Vista (Disney) not Universal.
Come on EngadgetHD, get your facts straight.

I'm sure they'll do the traditional update if the facts come in keep your pants on.
When you want news at lightning fast blog speed not everything can be 100% confirmed you know.

It's called simple fact checking. This lightning fast blog news has access to something called Google. Would've taken longer to write and post this news than it would take to see that Stargate is MGM.
This post was nothing more than bandwagon jumping and rumor-mongering.

That's kind of funny. There's a link right above you to IMDB. There is no mention of Universal at all. MGM has always owned Stagate. They are owned by Sony. Anything Stargate will be on Blu-ray if it is released on any HD disc, just like the movie is. Might want to do some fact checking of your own. It's on a Universal-owned TV station that airs it, but that doesn't mean Universal owns the Stargate franchise. And as for it being a "Sci-Fi Original", remember back when SG-1 was on Showtime? Then afer a few years it was brought over to Sci-Fi and that was still called an original series?
Universal doesn't own Stargate, MGM, and by extension Sony, does.

@anon
uh, duh, did you read my post??
That is the point I was making. The link to IMDB was my post, pointing out that universal has nothing to do with SG.
TrentD @ Jan 14th 2008 1:52PM
This is just a placeholder. There's one for War of the Worlds on HD DVD, and that title has never been announced.
Amazon does this to get a list of people who are interested, then they forward that info on to the studios to encourage them to make the release.
Let's not become a gossip blog or rumor mill...

Wow, good job in getting my hopes up.
An Amazon placeholder is news now? Where are the posts announcing the impending release of Star Wars, LOTR, and all the Star Trek movies on High Def?
On top of that spinning this is a sign Uni is going Blu? Now, I agree that Uni is going to go at least format neutral, but even basic fact checking would have shown that Stargate is Sony owned. If and when the House MD HD DVDs are announced, is it a sign that FOX is turning red?
This post is completely worthless, it adds absolutely zero news about Stargate Atlantis or the format war. You might as well have made a blog post telling us that Uni is going Blu because Ken Graffeo used Crest instead of Colgate this morning.

I wish we could rate news articles here just like we can rate posts.
