Plasma's success is no "comeback"
It comes as news to us that plasma was "given up for dead less than a year ago," as the linked article says. But we won't complain about the success that PDPs are enjoying lately and the excitement that continues to be generated by the displays. It's obvious that LCDs have taken over as synonymous with FPD to most consumers, but there are a couple of things that play to plasma's strengths. First, the increasing demand for LCDs has created a supply shortage that PDPs are happy to fill. Second, and more exciting to us, is the movement of PDPs to the high end, premium market. It's a good time to be a plasma-aware HD-nut!

I got the th-42pz77u for $850 after rebates. Then I made fun of some friends that paid over 1k for 42in lcd displays.

it amazes me how few people care about picture quality.... if they want to think plasma is dead and that LCD is where it's at - I can't help them

just bought a 60" Kuro plasma today to replace my 1080p LCD. Seems like plasmas will be around for the videophiles until LCDs or some other technology can meet or beat their picture quality.

So when is Warner going to be Plasma exclusive?
See how ridiculous that sounds?

I love my 42" Panny Plasma. I just hate that I paid 2.5x as much for it 18 months ago than the people who just got theirs. Se la vi. It is funny though, my friends who don't own an HDTV keep talking about the LCDs that they are planning on buying, and they look at me funny when I talk about the black levels and the fast motion movie scenes and sports where plasma (generally) has the advantage. Granted 120mhz LCD does a lot to offset the later, but those are still really expensive. But I agree with Ryan P's point. It has never been LCD vs. Plasma. The two can co-exist, as can other technologies. I've yet to find media that will play on one, but not the other. As much as there is a 'battle' between the two techs, it is for the investment dollar of the manufacturers.

I think you mean, "C'est la vie!"
Close enough.

Ryan? CLASSIC!!
For those who really want a nice head to head LCD vs. Plasma shootout, I just received my latest issue of Sound+Vision magazine yesterday and I would recommend the cover article. They compare what they consider to be the best examples of both formats, a Pioneer Kuro vs. a Samsung LCD. One guess which one won out...
I completely agree that both formats can and will survive for the indefinite future. And of course the point is that they both SHOULD survive. HD-DVD is no more dead than plasma is. The way I see it is that they have devoted supporters and Universal and Paramount should have the sense to realize that. At this point, I could care less about studios being format neutral, if Universal or Paramount continue to produce product, the consumers will continue to buy it, its really that simple.
Oh, and Glenn, it is "C'est la vie"...

In the immortal words of the bard immortal -- LL Cool J -- "Don't call it a comeback, I'be been here for years. Rockin' my piers, putting suckas in fear."
Amen. ;-)

Kim hit the nail on the head. Plasma manufacturers need to go after the high-end buyers. Yes, you will have to pay a little more, but we have the best picture. I would hate to lose plasma. I tried a Sharp Aquos, and it couldn't hold a candle to my Pioneer plasma. I gave it to my dad and bought another Pioneer plasma. There's no comparison on picture quality.

Nice article - I too am I huge fan of plasma. That said, I don't understand this comment in the article:
"First, the increasing demand for LCDs has created a supply shortage that PDPs are happy to fill. "
I don't know about everyone else, but I have yet to go to an electronics store and see any issues with availability. I just don't see any evidence of a shortage.

I have both a 40 inch LCD and a 52 inch plasma.. and both are HD... the LCD cannot hold a candle to the plasma with what I watch... both are from LG.. I watch heaps of sports and DVD's... also I use my x360 on the plasma as it just looks better... all the so called problems people say plasma has are a myth.. I used the xbox heaps on the plasma as its a bigger and better screen and there is no burn in on my.. LG has orbiter which I guess helps but I say plasma all the way..
I use my lg LCD for my pc to play games on.... not worth watching movies on it in a dark room as it just does not have the range of blacks the plasma has..
