It was a blowout CES for Blu-ray, and it all started even before the first day of the show with Warner's announcement. With manufacturer and studio support, the format was primed, and the addition of BD Live brought feature parity to Blu-ray and HD DVD. There was a definite feeling that it's okay to come into the water now, and we expect 2008 will see more expansion of the format still. On the high end, we saw Marantz's entry to the Blu-ray market, complete with a gaggle of drool-worthy specs and outputs. For the more modest budget (which is to say, anyone who even has a budget), skip past Denon's Blu-ray transport and check out the Samsung BD-1500 and Panasonic DMP-BD50.

All players mentioned here are really to quality but i would rather get a cheap Sony...

To have a complete picture, you guys forgot the low-end Funai/Sylvania (Q2 2008/ profile 1.1 - $299 or less) and the Daewoo/Daytek (Q3-Q4 2008 / Profile 2.0 - $199 to $299).
Pioneer also anounced a player for Q3/Q4 2008, profile 1.1 with advanced audio support (including internal decoding of DTS-HD MA), officially presented at their show in May.
Just a little complement :)

Sounds awesome about the Pioneer, I've got the most recent model now and can't wait until a profile 1.1 comes out... You got a link for that?

I think that's too expensive for a second/third rate brand. Buying cheap might not be so bad for $30 DVD players, but $200-$300 for a player is a bit much for a brand of highly questionable reputation.

Oh, I wonder why nobody reviewed the Sapphire models reportedly present on the Sony stand (first Sony 2.0 models)? Are they under some kind of NDA or something ?
Galley @ Jan 12th 2008 6:48PM
They weren't commercial products, only concepts.
Smoke_Dawg_187 @ Jan 13th 2008 12:46AM
Are any of these players sub $300? I really don't want to even pay that for a player. $200 would be the highest I'd pay.

I'm torn between the Samsung 5500 and the Panny BD50. Analog inputs vs combo. Chances are the winner will be the BD50, because of all the issues of the older gen 5000 people are reporting.
Although chances are I think I'll wait for a cheaper BD player with analog outputs and complete advanced audio codec decoding support. No PS3 for me!

There isn't one of them on the market that is a genuine profile 2.0 player and who knows when profile 2.0 discs will appear (it'll be a very long time if they stick to the sort of timetable profile 1.1 had).
After what the BDA said about the strong possibility of profile 1.0 & profile 1.1 owners having big problems with the final profile 2.0 spec discs (and that it was just tough, "they knew what they were getting into") why would anyone take the chance on buying anything Blu-ray that wasn't profile 2.0?
BTW good luck with those Daewoo's
(my pal - who works in one of their Irish factories - wouldn't touch them with a barge-pole, poor quality rubbish is his description for all their products)
