Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending January 6th, 2008

We expected to skip a week at some point and this week's Nielsen VideoScan numbers courtesy of Home Media Magazine is for the first week of January. This was a big one for Blu-ray in regards to releases with a few Resident Evil titles -- including box sets -- as well as Shoot 'Em Up and War. These big titles was enough to push every HD DVD titles out of the top ten with the exception of The Bourne Ultimatum -- for the fist time since November. The big Warner announcement probably didn't have much of an influence the 65/35 (1.86:1) split since it occurred so late in the week, but we'll be waiting to see how it affects the numbers moving forward. Of course next week won't be the greatest example either, as the red camp only had a few catalog titles and as we've seen so many times before, it's really the big blockbusters that move the charts.

Well enjoy the last week with the blu PAC MAN chart before it completely eats away the red part. That mouth will be closing fast.
zargon @ Jan 11th 2008 3:20PM
Wow, did you have to rub your two brain cells together to figure that one out?
Impressive...
el_fingo @ Jan 11th 2008 3:52PM
Wow Resident Evil is number one? Must be all the sony fans enjoying that one. The tomato meter rates that great movie at a awesome 23%. Oh and War.. that one is 13%. Quality?
DEEZNUTZ @ Jan 11th 2008 3:52PM
Awwwwe, so cute Zargon! You follow my posts around so much, I think I'll make you my pet.
Thanks for being my number one fan!

I do what I can, including rubbing brain cells together to come up with comments like the one above.
hemmy @ Jan 11th 2008 3:18PM
yeah, end of next week and onward is where we'll see what effect Warner's announcement will have had on the marketshares.
hemmy @ Jan 11th 2008 3:19PM
Yeah, at the end of next week and onward we'll see what kind of fallout Warner's announcement will have had on sales.
hemmy @ Jan 11th 2008 3:23PM
Sorry for the double post. Engadgethd + classic is hosed. Has there been an official comment on the posting issues yet?
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 3:21PM
What a sweep.

Is there even any point now to doing this every week? Are you going to show a solid blue circle starting June 1?

How come HD rental charts are not posted? Nielsen has the info as well.
rg23 @ Jan 11th 2008 3:36PM
What's up with these double/triple postings?
John B @ Jan 11th 2008 3:57PM
Yeah, these multiple posts are getting out of hand. I'm getting network connection errors when trying to post, but apparently the server is still catching them.
John B @ Jan 11th 2008 4:01PM
As another bit of how unusual this multiple posting is, whenever a message actually gets posted properly it has my avatar on the message. (Long live Marvin the Martian!) But when a message gets the network connection error, it still posts but it doesn't have the avatar.
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 4:11PM
Crappy engadget software.
andy @ Jan 11th 2008 3:40PM
Is there a point to following this anymore?
On the other hand, it might be fun to see how long it takes all of teh non-geeks that got HDDVD players over the holidays to figure this out.
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 4:13PM
I'm sure they'll figure it out once they figure out they've plugged their HD DVD player into their HDTV via composite cables.

Amazon is starting the equivalent of a Bogo on dozens of titles (up to 53% off), as reported on Blu-ray.com.
so much for the doom scenarios of disc prices going through the roof ;)
Don @ Jan 11th 2008 3:57PM
You can almost guarantee that the BOGO's will stop if HD DVD goes under. That will probably be because the BD allies will be able to sell a lot more Blu-rays and thus lower their price to half what it is today, but it might also be just to gouge customers who now have no other options. Whatever the reason, there will be no incentive to continue doing true BOGO's to increase market share once the format war is over and your market share is at or near 100%.
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 4:17PM
Don, WTF are you talking about? I just put out a personal guarantee the BOGO's won't end.
Don @ Jan 11th 2008 5:39PM
But I posted first, so your personal guarantee is invalid.
Sorry, that's the law.
Benj @ Jan 12th 2008 12:55AM
Thanks for the heads up, I just went and bought myself seven more Blu-Ray movies (for half price) after buying my first (ever) Blu-Ray movie yesterday. Next month I'm buying the LG Blu-Ray / HD DVD combo drive and I already have a collection of eight Blu-Ray movies.
Kaiser @ Jan 11th 2008 3:52PM
It will have a huge impact. I have stopped buying discs, and I was squarly in the red camp.
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 4:10PM
I'm sure the HD DVD forum will miss your loss leader BOGO purchases.
Dave @ Jan 11th 2008 3:54PM
duds have only 1 title this time :) next week none :)

Had to repost since I dont know how I ended up inbetween zango and Deeznutz
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 4:09PM
I take it you haven't seen Resident Evil. It's actually a very good movie. Now I know the reviewers at Rotten Tomato would rather watch The Queen, but if you like action zombie movies then this is a good one to watch. I was entertained.
Craig WB @ Jan 12th 2008 4:45AM
This may come as a shock to you but there's a large number of people out there that really like those movies.
Man On Fire got 39% yet on High Def Digest it got full 5 stars out of 5.
Not only that guess what the best movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes is Toy Story 2 Great film but best of all time? I dunno.
Landlocked @ Jan 11th 2008 4:01PM
Wouldn't it be ironic if HD DVD's share JUMPED next week b/c of red peeps buying up WB discs that will be scarce come late Spring.
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 4:07PM
No
Killer @ Jan 11th 2008 5:34PM
Breeze are you retarded? Nvm you answered it already...
"Would these be 1080i streaming players?"
They are 1080p too, ignorant fanboy.
I own a HD DVD and A Blu-ray player...
HD-A35 and A Pannasonic BD30K (Which thanks to it having DTS MASTER, its the best blu-ray player and I got it cheaper then what you pay for a ps3, $314)
I'm perfectly happy with both. HD > SD
I don't care what format it is, and Personally, I see no difference between them. Fox and Lionsgate is the only one make TRUE Blu-ray movies. (13% of Blu-ray movies are DTS Master) WTF is with the 5.1 Unconpressed from Sony and Disney movies? Talk about cheap... Oh then you have the perfect 1/8 of the movies that DVD has. Why is there so little of movies to choose from both sides? It's Pathetic!
Ps. RE:E did suck, its a video game movie adaption...enough said. It's like DOOM. The only one that actually worked was Hitman.
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 7:23PM
@ Killer
You're so stupid you can't even reply to the proper thread, you idiot. I didn't think it took that much intellect to click the proper Reply link - apparently it does. BTW, did the 1080i comment really hurt you, you little HD DUD fanboy.
As for not being able to see the difference, well, that's what happens when you develop for the lowest common denominator - HD DVD.
You can really tell a HD DUD fanboy when he starts complaining about uncompressed sound. You see, HD DUD fanboys like their sound compressed as much as possible. When you have difficultly hearing (and seeing), I guess sound isn't to big of a deal. It's really too bad we don't see more LPCM sound on HD DUD movies - oh wait, we can't because they have storage limitations.
Hopefully, the demise of HD DUD will allow content producers to truly fill up that BD disc with worthy HD content instead of having to drop down to SD extras because they just couldn't fit it on the HD DUD disc.
el_fingo @ Jan 11th 2008 4:13PM
Ah yes I did see the first one.. I was laughing so hard at how bad it was.. especially the scene where the lady jumps on the walls and kicks the weird dog thing. I couldnt take it seriously then and certainly not now. The trailers just make it look like every cookie cutter zombie flick around. Now Shawn of the Dead, that at least tries to be funny.
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 4:16PM
And fails so miserably.
Jeremy Childress @ Jan 11th 2008 4:37PM
Where were the VideoScan Number for the week ending December 31st, I think HD DVD killed Blu that week? The last one was December 23rd.
Hans Martin @ Jan 11th 2008 4:56PM
You think? Based on what information? The leaflets handed out on the secret underground HD DVD-meetings? FUD...
hemmy @ Jan 11th 2008 5:18PM
Dave Vaughn, a reputable insider at the AVS forums who has been reporting these numbers accurately up to this point has it:
Week ending 12/30:
WE: BD-61% HDD-39%
YTD: BD-?% HDD-?% (unconfirmed)
SI: BD-62% HDD-38%
HDDVD lost each and every week to Blu-ray in 2007.
Larry @ Jan 12th 2008 3:51AM
Yeah but Blu-Ray has not increased it's advantage over HD-DVD at all... Even after 18 months it's taken only 3% market share off HD-DVD.
Wow, stunning victory worth the hundreds of millions spent by Sony!
hemmy @ Jan 12th 2008 11:39AM
Fanboys; when they only mention "Sony" in their non-arguments.
Jody @ Jan 11th 2008 4:44PM
Who Cares? The format war is over, a week later and no word from the HD-DVD camp, they have no rabbit left to pull out. Can we stop fighting about this crap?
PS, toshiba has annouced future firmware for their HD-DVD players allowing them to be used as streaming video players, at lease those of us who bought one might actually have a use for them besides upscaling.
Breeze @ Jan 11th 2008 4:53PM
Would these be 1080i streaming players? Also, how about a firmware update to play Blu-ray movies? When is that one coming out?
Jonny @ Jan 11th 2008 8:04PM
Link?
Sam Winter @ Jan 13th 2008 5:35AM
@Breeze
I'm sure that's sarcasm, but if it's not, thats not going to ever happen. A Blu-ray machine might be able to play HD-DVDs at some point, but not vice versa.
The blu-ray hardware spec has a maximum audio+video system bandwidth of 48mbps versus a paltry 30mbps for HD-DVD. So the DSPs and other components probably couldn't handle that bitrate. Also, though they use the same laser, the optics and chassis have to be more precise for Bluray due to the higher bit density on the disc.
Xyzzy @ Jan 11th 2008 4:51PM
It's rather annoying to see the results of the BD BOGO sale, but not the results of the HD DVD BOGO from the prior week.... Typical, but anoying.
