Samsung's SP-A800B DLP projector gets some deets
Announced way back in August at IFA Germany, Samsung's SP-A800B 1080p DLP projector never seemed to get many details when it comes to the US market, and now we at least have a US price listed. A mere $6,995 gets you a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, 24p capability, and no mention of a release date.[Via About Projectors]

Deets? I thought we had banned that awful word!

Can anyone tell me why I would want this, when the Epson 1080 UB has better contrast ratio (50,000:1 vs. 10,000:1), better ANSI lumens (1600 vs. 1000), and costs less than half as much?

Is it because it is 8db quieter, has an extra HDMI port, or because it "delivers soft blue lighting and has a 'dolphin-like' design".?

One buys this rather than other projectors because JOE KANE helped design it - especially its color related abilities. Do a google search to learn more about Joe Kane....

I respect Joe Kane (I own DVE, and am waiting ANXIOUSLY for the Blu-Ray update).
That said...
I simply have a hard time looking at the specs (namely the Epson's 5x the contrast-ratio combined with 12-bit/x.v. color) and believing that the Samsung can be better, let alone better enough to warrant nearly twice the expense... regardless of who helped design it.
It just seems like either Epson would have to have made SERIOUS errors in hardware implementation, or Joe Kane would have to have added some SERIOUS "magic" to the lesser-spec'd Samsung in order to reverse what would appear to be Epson's clear advantage. The latter may be entirely possible, but based off of all the early reviews I've read, I doubt the former is.
I suppose the only real way to find out for sure is to get optimized (using DVE Blu-Ray, of course) versions of these units side-by-side for comparison. ;)
