HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on December 23rd and 26th, 2007
The holidays always get us out of whack, not only are movies released on two different days, but the post is in the middle of the week. Either way, there aren't that many titles, but all those with a new HD DVD player for Christmas yesterday will be happy to enjoy the biggest title this week; The Kingdom. Meanwhile, new Blu-ray fans can laugh in HD at the latest installment of Rush Hour -- while red has to wait to see it, presumably due to the lack of region coding on HD DVD. This competes the list for HD DVD going into CES, but blu has a few more next week, as they push the first profile 1.1 title to just before the big show. HD DVD 370 vs Blu-ray 398*
Blu-ray
- Rush Hour 3 (New Line)
- Pan's Labyrinth (New Line)
- Cat People (1982) (Universal)
- Eastern Promises (Universal)
- The Kingdom (2007) (Universal)
- Timecop (Universal)
- The Heartbreak Kid (DreamWorks)
- Pan's Labyrinth (New Line)
* Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously available.

The Kingdom looks intriguing to me. I'll rent Rush Hour 3 and probably Pan's Labyrinth.
william Buckley @ Dec 26th 2007 11:05AM
Forget the Kingdon, go out and buy Pan's. It is wonderfully shot and the story is great. This is a must own imho.
Eddie @ Dec 26th 2007 11:19AM
I was sort of excited about the Kingdom, but Pan's is a total shocker to me! I am so excited that it's out in HD! One of the best movies in a long, long time.
Ryan @ Dec 26th 2007 11:34AM
I never even heard of Pan's Labyrinth until watching the format war. I'll have to read some write-ups about it to see what it is even about.
Ryan @ Dec 26th 2007 11:37AM
I just read a wiki on Pan's, is it true the HD DVD/Blu-ray available is in Spanish with English subtitles?
rekoil @ Dec 26th 2007 12:16PM
Ryan: The film was shot in spanish, the theatrical release had English subtitles. I would expect the DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray release would do the same. Dubbed dialogue is teh suck.
h4ldol @ Dec 26th 2007 12:08PM
Blu-ray. Pulling away from HD DVD. Again. Clearly, the HD home theater fan's format of choice.
zargon @ Dec 26th 2007 12:19PM
Unless Blu-ray is running yet another BOGO to skew the sales figures, they will have a hard time running away with this one, possibly even getting more than 55%.
Stop being such a biased zealot and spewing your crap.
John B @ Dec 26th 2007 1:04PM
Why the hell is this troll's account still active?
h4ldol @ Dec 26th 2007 12:11PM
Pan's Labyrinth is a Spanish language movie, so the answer is yes, it is in Spanish with English subtitles. Figures HD DVD fans would know nothing of quality foreign films. Crap like Transformers and Shrek are more up their alley I guess. Blu-ray. The educated and cultured HD fan's format of choice. Tongue in cheek, but sadly, still true.
Evan @ Dec 26th 2007 12:19PM
You are so worthless.
zargon @ Dec 26th 2007 12:24PM
Right, because such gems as Rush Hour 3, Spiderman 3, Hairspray, The Santa Clause 3, Fantastic Four 1 and 2, etc... really show that Blu-ray movies and their fans are "educated."
The only thing you are showing is zealots like your are uneducated and give Blu-ray supporters a bad name.
william Buckley @ Dec 26th 2007 12:28PM
You really are a movie aficionado aren't you. Say what you want as a fanboy, but you cannot debate the fact that HD has more "serious" movies at their disposal. I buy movies for myself on red, and movies for my six year old on blu.
Jeff @ Dec 26th 2007 1:28PM
what the hellis your problem, you were obviously picked on ALOT in school, probably still are sittin in your mothers basement an all
Dave @ Dec 27th 2007 1:07AM
My understanding was that someone was going to have a talk with this loser--and then, if he didn't start behaving, his account would be suspended. What happened to that?
jango fett @ Dec 27th 2007 3:51AM
hehehehe you got hd dvd fans by the balls! laughin my ass off on this one. you got more replies than anyone else.
Ryan @ Dec 27th 2007 10:15AM
lol h4ldol, you're such a tool.
haveacoke @ Dec 26th 2007 1:24PM
Where are the Nielsen Video Scan for Harry and Borne? We are almost on Blade Runner's week for the Nielsen Video Scan release.
Bill @ Dec 26th 2007 11:56AM
haveacoke:
It represented a shift in momentum that the BDA doesn't like much. So the blu-biased sites and bloggers wont publish it (although im sure blu-ray did a little better in sheer software sales). But Harry Potter for HD-DVD did better.

I have been wondering the same thing?? I saw threads last week on highdefdigest about leaked numbers being something like 55/45 or something like that, but haven't seen anything "official". I even went to homemediamagazine to check for their info direct, but I couldn't find it there either.
zargon @ Dec 26th 2007 12:07PM
The leaked overall numbers were 61:39
Ben @ Dec 26th 2007 1:25PM
We have used the numbers and charts from Home Media Magazine since the start of that weekly post. But for whatever reason HMM hasn't released their online version yet. I've emailed them to see when it might be released.
haveacoke @ Dec 26th 2007 2:30PM
Thanks Ben.
domerdel @ Dec 26th 2007 1:53PM
although the 61:39 "Leak" seems realistic figures, the only source (from what I hear) is the AVS forums. Unless it's from a viable source, I'll believe it. AVS forum = unofficial/rumor news.
You guys can't take the AVS (or any) forum THAT seriously, can you?
Ben @ Dec 26th 2007 1:54PM
While AVS isn't a source withing itself, there are many posters there with a perfect track record. I believe the one who "leaked" the numbers is such a source, but without the rest of the data there isn't much to post about.
domerdel @ Dec 26th 2007 2:09PM
Ben:
I see your logic. Still don't buy it.
zargon @ Dec 26th 2007 2:31PM
There is no logic buy, you can either believe it or not believe it.
Dave Vaughn at AVS is an insider and has been getting the numbers early from the people at Neilsen. He has been leaking them for the quite a few Wednesdays now, those numbers have always been spot on. There really is no reason to lie. On top of that, I doubt anyone would be able to be lucky enough to guess the numbers for more than a few weeks in a row, the Neilsen Prediction thread would prove that. Nevermind the other information revolving around the Neilsen sales numbers other than just the overall ratio that he leaks that is also spot on.
Again, you don't have to believe it, but many do and he is considered a valid source. The other data and pretty pictures follow shortly afterwards.
rekoil @ Dec 26th 2007 4:53PM
You talking about Harry Potter or Red/Blue sales overall? And 61:39 in whose favor? Can you link the avsforum post?
zargon @ Dec 26th 2007 5:05PM
When I say overall, I am talking about Blu vs Red sales, not specific movies. Nielsen and the AVS Forum thread always post the ratio/percentages in a Blu vs Red format, so it was in favor of Blu.
Here is the link to the specific thread for last weeks numbers (12/21), it is the Nielsen Prediction thread.

In case you are interested, here is the link for this weeks numbers (12/28).

These Nielsen prediction threads are always posting in the Blu-ray & HD DVD Areas group under the Blu-ray & HD DVD Areas board.

Cam @ Dec 26th 2007 2:30PM
Watch 'Pan's Labyrinth' before you go buy it. I heard all the rave reviews about it (95% on rottentomatoes) but thot it was pretty overrated. Maybe rent it first
SimbaDogg @ Dec 26th 2007 3:48PM
why isn't rush hour 3 on hd dvd?
zargon @ Dec 26th 2007 4:28PM
Because New Line is being stupid and won't release movies to HD-DVD when they are still playing else where in the world since HD-DVD is completely region free (it is not a option like Blu-ray).
They claiming that they loose big $$$ when people can buy it on a media format when it is still playing in the theaters.
Personally, I think it is hogwash, but it will eventually come out on HD-DVD in a few months.
SimbaDogg @ Dec 26th 2007 5:08PM
actually...good explanation, that makes perfect sense.
Wes @ Dec 26th 2007 8:11PM
Interesting. Rush Hour 3 purchases versus 5 movies only on HD-DVD. (not counting Pan Labyrith for either side as its on both formats and probably would sell roughly equal I guess? (55:45 or so)).
I wonder who will be the overall winner for the week? Can Eastern Promises, The Kingdom, TimeCop, The Heartbreak Kid and ..Cat..people? overtake Rush Hour 3's sales?
Hard to say. I look forward to seeing the weekly numbers from this week.
Ryan @ Dec 27th 2007 10:20AM
Rush Hour 3 fits perfect with the PS3 demographic so I figure it will be the biggest seller.
rg23 @ Dec 27th 2007 11:55AM
The HD DVD friendly site holywood reporter are quoting Nielsen's VideoScan as their source for their top Blu-Ray and HD DVD titles for the week ending 12/16/2007. Where the heck is the full data?
Christopher @ Dec 27th 2007 5:11PM
@h4ldol
Oh the Irony. I don't believe you have any room to talk about others and recognition of "quality foreign films". If I recall correctly (and I do) just a week ago you were dismissing Once because you had never heard of it.
