My main question is: if you are going to test the two technologies, why not pick the best rated panels of each type? Unless I've been grossly misinformed, neither company represented in this comparison is the top-ranked manufacturers for their respective technologies. Might as well compare a marantz to a visio.
Well its all subjective really. But I think the Kuro line has been hailed as the best plasmas this year. At least from all the reviews. Sound & Vision mag (wher e the article came from) Picked the PDP-6010 as their product of the year. I think they chose the samsung because of the LED Backlighting which is supposed lead to better blacks. Admittedly, the best LCD is probably more of a close race.
I'm not sure which plasmas you believe are better than the pioneer kuro plasmas. Everyone except for Consumer Reports seems to agree that the kuro plasmas are the best plasmas made today, and that's only because Consumer Reports seems to ogle anything Panasonic makes. I've been in stores when all the TV's are set to SD broadcast, and the only tv's that are watchable are the kuro's because of their scaling and their natural colors.
That's exactly what they did, the believe that these are the best two examples of each technology.
@Mike, CR came right out and said the reason they preferred the Panny was because it was less expensive and the whites were brighter. Both of these factors aren't usually considered when evaluating overall PQ -- unless you plan to watch hockey or alpine skiing most of the time.
And LED backlighting has been touted as something of a "Second Coming of Contrast Ratio" by LCD buffs, and Samsung's LED models have proven to be top performers. So it makes sense to pit the current best example of the technologies head-to-head (Pioneer's KURO vs. Samsung LED) as the best representatives in a PDP vs. LCD match-up.
So I'm gonna go with "you are grossly misinformed." ;-)

Um... Pioneer has been the undisputed king of PDP (and all flat panel, for that matter) image quality going on 5 years straight. http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/12/18/ultimateavmag-makes-best-of-the-year-picks/
