What's wrong with people disliking Microsoft for that? Another way to state it is that Microsoft wanted the BDA to adopt their propriety HDi to give themselves some income on royalties. When the BDA declined because they wanted to stay with the open Java standard, Microsoft decided instead to prop up HD-DVD and help bring on/prolong a format war. No matter which way you lean in the format war, it's clear that from a *computer* perspective, HD-DVD is inferior to Blu-Ray, with its smaller capacity and complete lack of burners. Pathetic move for a few pennies per HD-DVD disc, Microsoft!
What's wrong with Sony adapting a robust proven manufacturing system aka DVD? why did they have to reinvent the wheel? let me guess; for the good of humanity not royalties! Funny how you keep putting down Microsoft for wanting to profit yet nobody mentions Sony and how they seem to love to control market with every format of their format. Sony is a company with a biggest number of loser formats...Mini Disc? ATRAC? Beta?
And we see how beneficial that Java support is. A complete mess. Not all player read BD-J and you are deeply mistaken if you think that BD-J is free or open-source.. It just originates from Java but is a whole different beast. Ask around how much they charge for BD-J authoring and licensing.. you will quickly realize that Microsoft's HDi is much better, cheaper and efficient solution for everyone.
I don't have a single problem BECAUSE it comes from Microsoft. Some really good things came from them and they are truly developer supporting company. If they offer better solution which HDi is by all measurements, it should be supported, regardless of the fact it comes from Microsoft.
Second of all, Microsoft did not turn against BD just because they didn't accept HDi. Microsoft did not join BD because they've seen that their business model is flawed as they have not had nor they properly have BD-50 production on a mass level and Microsoft was mocked upon by many BDA members (as it was clear who has the power in the BDA and who doesn't - they are called 3C (3 companies) and they make most of the decisions) and there was an issue how they treated them.
This is why they sided with HD DVD, but they have approached both formats the same way, DVD Forum and HD DVD Group accepted them with respect, while BDA "spit" on them.
I guess now they'll see what Microsoft can do. I can post the whole story for you if you like from Microsoft's vice president of consumer technologies who quit openly explained what happened from start. I have no reason to doubt him as he did say many things quite openly even about Microsoft.
@Mr.E It has just got me F'D how you blu zealots keep saying HD DVD is inferior to BR. How you come up with such bizzare statements is beyond me.
Please explain how BR being an unfinished beta product, that does not have next generation features in a next generation format, could possibly be considered a better product? If you said it was as good as, hey, thats your opinion, lets move on, but to bucket HD DVD and say BR is clearly better just shows your ignorance and arrogance, but that doesn't surprise me coming from someone pro BR, because that has been BR/Sonys attitude from day 1.
Since when has Java been more open than HTML, XML, CSS, SMIL, and JavaScript? HDi is just a combination of these technologies, you know, the technologies that make the web page that you are viewing right now, the standards that your web browser supports?
