Participants found that the tool significantly decreased the number of hours and reduced the costs associated with the production process, freeing up time to refine and improve content.

"The authoring process for HD DVD is more complex and expensive than the process for standard DVD, and as with any new technology, it can require a lot of time and resources," said John Harrington, CEO of NetBlender. "In the process of working with the new Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Emulator, we were able to cut the number of test discs needed per month from roughly 200 down to 50, saving more than 100 work hours per month. This positively impacted our business essentially overnight. We estimate we will recoup the low cost of the tool in less than one month's time."

HD4ME

Comments on Microsoft unveils Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator, hopes to speed up development

Microsoft and everyone knows very well that they need to speed up dev on the HD-DVD content for the simple fact that the format itself is nearly dead. Another way to state it is that Microsoft wanted the BDA to adopt their propriety HDi to give themselves some income on royalties. A complete mess. Not all player read BD-J and you are deeply mistaken if you think that BD-J is free or open-source.. It just originates from Java but is a whole different beast. Ask around how much they charge for BD-J authoring and licensing.. you will quickly realize that Microsoft's HDi is much better, cheaper and efficient solution for everyone.

I don't have a single problem BECAUSE it comes from Microsoft. Some really good things came from them and they are truly developer supporting company. If they offer better solution which HDi is by all measurements, it should be supported, regardless of the fact it comes from Microsoft.

Second of all, Microsoft did not turn against BD just because they didn't accept HDi. Microsoft did not join BD because they've seen that their business model is flawed as they have not had nor they properly have BD-50 production on a mass level and Microsoft was mocked upon by many BDA members (as it was clear who has the power in the BDA and who doesn't - they are called 3C (3 companies) and they make most of the decisions) and there was an issue how they treated them.

This is why they sided with HD DVD, but they have approached both formats the same way, DVD Forum and HD DVD Group accepted them with respect, while BDA "spit" on them.

I guess now they'll see what Microsoft can do. Now it's just a matter of time as the mass adoptation takes it's toll. The illusions of Blu-Ray winning by fans like yourself are only fueld by your ignorance, lack of understanding of market, web sites blu-ray.com and hollywoodinhidef.com, sites that were made by these same corporations to brainwash youngsters like you in order to gain your money and support for their money making machinery and your overall lack of understanding how mainstream consumers think. This is all fine though, you will now learn what happened when it's over and next time maybe you won't be so ignorant. What costs 3 times more?

As a software developer using MS tools all day every day (on Vista no less) I can assure you that just because MS name is on it doesn't mean it is quality, just that they have the $$$ to throw at it and make it stick. In my opinion, Microsoft being tied to HDDVD only proves that the format is inferior but seen as a affordable vehicle to which Microsoft can buy their way in to the market. They're not promoting HDDVD because it is better they are doing it because it makes business sense to them, plain and simple. Its the same franchised business strategy they employ everywhere, pour money into a rival technology to take the market share away from the competition. Unfortunately for HDDVD, MS isn't going to make good movies or increase blockbuster titles on the HDDVD side, that's their weakness and so MS is doing their best to marginalize that fact by pumping money into "features"...

JimC

Comments on Microsoft unveils Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator, hopes to speed up development

Wow, forgetting the format war for a minute, i thought this was a very positive article about a positive step forward in the production and lowering costs of discs, yet somehow the blu trolls have managed to rip it apart and turn this into a shit fight.
Yay, go blu.

HD4ME

Comments on Microsoft unveils Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator, hopes to speed up development

The same boring, childish, repetitive BS over and over again.
Yip, you own me, shouldn't you be at school?
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

HD4ME

Comments on Microsoft unveils Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator, hopes to speed up development

You quote a post from a BDA site, from paid BDA shill about what he thinks Sony CEO meant to say.. Just shut the hell up about HD DVD being dead, it isn't even close. I also find both to be the same quality, the audio is the only difference. I like to see my receiver say Dolby Tru HD, but PCM Uncompressed is almost the same if not the exact same. Both sides are good as long as you got a good set up!!! So just stop this childish bull shit about one side over the other. You sound like a bunch of high school little punks, especially BBG!!! Oh by the way the PS3 sucks as a Blu Ray player, it doesn't even let you get the high bit audio(Doesn't matter if you don't have an HD receiver, Denon A2808 great receiver). I say just let the war go on, get both so you don't miss out on any movies.

Joe

Comments on Microsoft unveils Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator, hopes to speed up development

@ smoke_dawg

straight to the point. everyone is tempted to spew a long rebuttal, but that pretty much does the job.

locke6854

Comments on Microsoft unveils Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator, hopes to speed up development

Great story.
