AT&T to launch U-Verse trial in Atlanta, Georgia
Superfluous washers / dryers aren't the only thing being tested out in Atlanta. Turns out, some 200 families in Georgia's capital will be part of a "controlled U-Verse launch" slated to take place by the year's end. Of course, it's not like we didn't know this was coming, but it's still refreshing to hear that the operator is staying on track with its promised Southeastern rollout. Reportedly, those lucky enough to be among the first to try out U-Verse in the ATL will receive over 300 channels, with "up to 30" of those being in high-definition. According to company spokesman Wes Warnock, this limited launch will allow the firm to "test systems and work out any kinks" before giving other Georgians (along with more of the Southeast) the chance to sign up in 2008. Regrettably, we're still left to wonder where U-Verse is headed after it has infiltrated Atlanta, but we'll take any progress we can get.[Thanks, Bruce B., image courtesy of AT&T]

come to new orleans please. any word on when they are coming to new orleans. I know at one point after the hurricane, bellsouth was working on going all fiber, but i think that stopped with the merger, dunno though.

It's FTTN, meaning you don't have fibre right to your doorsetp.
I can get U-Verse where I live but cable had more HD channels, and faster internet, so I think I'm all set. I'd drop cable in a second if I could get Fios.

U-Verse still needs some serious, serious work. One HD stream allowed, no whole house DVR functionality, lots of complaints about inferior HD quality. Plenty of little cosmetic problems, the kind that drive you mad. I've had it for 3 weeks and it is pretty crappy.

Wow, I had no idea it was such a small trial. They started ripping up lawns in my neighborhood (in Kennesaw, GA north of ATL) 2-3 weeks ago and put up a sign at the entranceway saying they were improving the network. But based on what I have read, it seems underwhelming (a small speed boost to my net connection would be nice though).

I already have AT&T FTTC and I cannot get VoIP through them, better than 1.5x256 broadband service through AT&T, no VOD and no HDTV. Really, AT&T is not even in the game in my neighborhood and I doubt they will be by 2010. Heck, even the now long gone Adelphia had HDTV and better broadband service to my home.
Now, if I wanted to go with the current cable provider offering I can get everything that AT&T cannot get me and AT&T has fiber running through my lawn. Poor AT&T. Once a loser, always a loser--and I'm not even advocating cable.
