Samsung's BD-P1400 Blu-ray player dips to $270

Whoa, Nelly! Just three days after we saw Samsung's BD-P1400 crack the $300 barrier, the unit is now down below $270 at Amazon. More specifically, it can be had right now for $269.98, which certainly brings it a lot closer to the price range currently dominated by HD DVD. The only question now is: how much lower will it go (and when)?

This player has so many problems no wonder Samsung and Amazon are trying to off it. Spend an extra $200 and get the new Panasonic player, it's of high quality and problem free.

A closeout, obviously. I think you're going to see everyone but Sony flee the low end of the Blu-ray marketplace. Sony, like Toshiba, has an interest in the patents, but nobody else is going to want to lose money for Sony.

I'd expect a large move by everyone into more expensive dual-mode players. Samsung and LG are there already.

Xyzzy - I believe the news of note in this post is that this is the first "new" sub-$300 player being sold by a blu ray manufacturer, and the cheapest of the bunch, so it's not unlike the news of the low prices on Toshiba's entry level players (A2 and A3).

Kevin - I don't think you can reasonably expect to see any blu ray hardware manufacturer stop making stand alone blu ray-only players at this point in the game. Unless I've missed something, Samsung has not announced that it will only make dual-format players going forward, and I don't recall hearing any other manufacturers make similar claims. Nor have a read anything that suggests that they are losing money. In fact, I've read the opposite. That's why, other than the PS3, blu ray players have been priced so high (they aren't being subsidized).

The price reductions are exactly what you would expect to see over time. By this time next year, there will be little difference, if any, in the prices of HD-DVD and Blu Ray players. There will be a number of options in the $100-$200 range, and higher end units in the $300-$500 range.

I have no problem with the initial report a few days ago -- but to say, "Now the retailer has it for $20 less than we said a few days ago!!!" isn't really news...

I didn't see a post about the Venturer HD DVD players going from $199.98 to $190... And I wouldn't expect to. Make an initial point and move on unless it drops significantly. Less than 10% off the previous price is not significant, IMHO.

He says that the BD's are getting closer to the HD DVD players but he is wrong. In the same period that this player came down $30, Toshiba A30 came down $40. It's now selling at $239.98 on Amazon. If you look at it that way, the gap has actually widened by $10 on Amazon even though the author would erroneously have you think it closed. Yeah this is certainly a good thing for BD, but present the facts fairly. This in no way closed a gap, the gap has grown by $10 since the $300 -> $270 price drop.

I've been sitting on the fence for too long and i made the jump on the HD dvd deal where you get 10 free movies with the purchase of one of the hd dvd players. Got the A30 for $239 on amazon. Yeah i know A30 has some minor issues but you can't help it since its only 30 bucks more than the A3. This will go nicely with my sammy lnt4069 i just bought. :o) Three of my buddies just bought an hd dvd player in the last weeks as well.

For the people blabling about the 1.0 profile ...
You do realize that a vast portion ofthe population couldn't care less about PiP? And they just want great video, great audio, and a lot of good familly choices in films right? :)

Great move for Samsung, p[robably preparing the arrival of a 1.1, and just as I predicted the BDA is preparing its move into mass market at the beginning of '08.

Be prepared for 1080p Blu Ray players around $200 shortly in Q1 '08 (profile 1.0), and new models at around $300-$400 with profile 1.1/2.0 shortly thereafter.
By mid 08 you'll have those 1.1/2.0 Blu Ray players around $200 and nowhere left to run for Toshiba except in the bargain bins of Walgreens ;)

By Xmas 08, you'll have decent 1080p Blu Ray players for sub $200, mark my word (but the anouncements of CES 2008 will have shifted the market to Blu for good by then anyway).

Last, for the "Sony" obsessed. You should check out waht the BDA is comprised of. Most of the CE in there have patents with Blu Ray, Panasonic (Matsushita) even moreso than Sony.
Also, they are very likely to be satisfied with Sony's strategy, because contrarily to Toshiba, Sony didn't kill its own CE market by discounting prices like mad (cf Onkyo).

Nice! Keep bringing those prices down, Blu. I really don't care about either format, as long as they're cheap and available. I love HD for that, and Blu will have to win me back if they want my business with lower prices for hardware and media.

Being in the optical media replication industry, and knowing the process changes that must be implemented in order to replicate bluray media, I don't know how they can afford to lower their price point on media. HDDVD's media is barely more ezpensive than standard DVD to replicate, so Blu has to find some way to compete and hopefully this is indicative of things to come.

You forgot to add internet connectivity, but you're right. Why would anyone looking for a bargain care about PIP, 1080i, so called lossless audio and probably unbeknown to them, meet Profile 2.0 standards? It's a $99 HD-DVD player! And despite some drawbacks, does more than its market competitor. That sure will be fine with the bargain hunter, especially if it has to compare to a $270 Blu-Ray. Wow, now the bargain hunter has $170 more to spend on...oh, I dunno, WHATEVER!

Eddie, either you aren't in touch with the right people, or you don't know what you are talking about.
The media issue has already ben tackled in detail, and by now it is a total non issue (a a replicator was saying in an interview recently, google around for that one).

Go to AVS Forums and READ what INSIDERS who actually DEAL with replicators and REPLICATORS themselves have to say. Don't be a numbnut. Blu-Ray discs are more expensive to MAKE, that's why HD DVD combo disc with all the bells and whistles costs the same as regular Blu Ray disc.

Blu-Ray yield rate on BD50 are about 60-70% on HD DVD HD30 they are 95%, Blu-Ray media requires more additional costs due to coating and other crap, and requires significant investment in replication equipment. All this affects the price.

I see, so that's why up until now the combo discs have been $5.00 more. And here I thought Warner wised up and realized that no one wants to pay the combo tax.

And Nfinity, I read AVS too. And I do believe that most of your rant, and especially the 60-70% part of it, came from the HD DVD insiders. That's hardly the most unbiased source.

Samsung are clearly dumping this player in a "run out" fashion onto the uneducated public as they don't want to get caught with obsolete stock, and as i said to redplague, if you support BR in the sale of this obsolete POS onto the unsuspecting public, then you, IMO, are just another blu troll as well.

Oh, and you are wrong again, Nfinity etc are separate individuals, have a look at some of the times of the posts, i would have to be up 24 hours a day if you were correct, so save your poisoned darts for someone else buddy.

Also, FYI, if this was say a 1.1 Panasonic player with a good reputation at this price point, you would hear no comment from me as, Panasonic anything is tremendous quality and that would be a great result for BR, so I am not trolling, but this samsung player is a POS and you know it!
