HDNet was less than pleased with DirecTV's plans to move HDNet and HDNet Movies to the new HD tier. HDNet has been a part of DirecTV's HD package for some time, but with the addition of so many new HD channels, they created a new $5/mo HD Extra Pack consisting of all the HD only channels.
HDNet sued DirecTV, and now the two have settled on what
Mark Cuban described as a "win-win" compromise. HDNet will remain free to anyone who pays DirecTV's $10/mo HD access fee, while HDNet Movies will be moved to the HD Extra Pack.
HDNet isn't the only HD only channel to get special treatment, as Discovery's HD Theater will also remain.

That's great news, because I really didn't wanna pay the extra $5, but I was planning on it, since those are two of my favorite channels.

so let me get this right...
on direct tv, you have to pay the bs price for your plan, then pay 10 dollars for HD, and then pay 5 More dollars for Extra HD??? wtf...

Is this just for new signups or does everyone now have to pay the extra $5?

I am glad this decision has been made. I was not planning on keeping the $5/mo hd pack anyways, but it is nice to still have these 2 channel stay in the $10/mo pack.
To the above comments, this is for everyone, new subscribers and existing, however, as a new subscriber, you get the first 3 mos. of the $5/mo HD pack for free.
As far as Directv BS price for plan plus the additional cost for HD? Do some research and you'll find that it is cheaper than the competitors along with the most HD. No one else can compare.

I wold like to know what will happen when EVERY channel is HD? Do they drop this ridiculous HD programming fee or will they just raise the base price? I'm talking about all the providers out there, since every one (as far as I know) from Satellite to cable and FiOS charge a trumped up fee for HD programming.
