In the battle for HD offerings, everyone is playing
catch-up to satellite. For its part, Cable operator
Charter Communications is rolling out switched digital video (
SDV) across its northern Los Angeles area to stay in the fight. The company plans to deliver more than 40 HD channels in 2008, roughly double its current count. This trial of SDV is expected to be up and running in Q1 2008, with the rollout continuing in other markets over the next two years. Hopefully the trial goes well and the count quickly moves past 40, because that number certainly won't guarantee any bragging rights next to those touted by
DirecTV,
Verizon or even fellow cable company
Cox.

Hmmm, I have Charter Communications in Eastern Washington State.. I wonder if this means I'll get the 40 channels as well or if this is completely limited to Las Angeles?

In Louisiana Charter is now up to 40 HD channels including locals without using SDV. They moved 3 analog channels to digital last week and added the HD channels this week.

St. Louis has about 18 HD Channels from Charter. No idea if they'll be increasing this number this year. Don't even have The Weather Channel in HD, which Charter has started showing in HD in other States.
