BBC Trust approves mixed-genre HD channel
Just a month after we heard that the BBC was mulling the decision to add a dedicated HD channel comes word that the BBC Trust has given the all-important thumbs-up to the idea. Reportedly, the "mixed genre" channel will show programs from across all of the BBC's stations and will air on cable / satellite "as soon as possible." Additionally, the channel should launch on Freesat just as soon as that goes live, but proposals for viewing it via Freeview were put on hold "because viewers might have been required to buy two new set-top boxes to receive the channel." So, for all you Brits out there, let us know how splendid the channel is when it becomes available -- hopefully your patience will pay off.[Via Guardian]

I'm looking forward to the new Beeb HD channel, I just hope they show some ambition and keep the quality high (the talk of a 'mixed-genre' could be something of a warning, lol).
The BBC's present BBC HD 'trial' channel is, IMO, usually excellent (if short on hours broadcast per day) and it is one of the best HD channels we have
(they are consistently one of the highest bit-rate high def broadcasters we get in the UK on satellite or cable).
Pity that high def freeview is to be delayed but as I have Sky HD I'm not bothered personally speaking.

Ode to finally have *Doctor Who* shot and televised in HD.
Its spin-off *Torchwood* is already shot and televised in HD, yet the BBC [and Warner Home Video here in the Americas] did not see fit to release Series 1 on Blu-ray or HD DVD as of yet. Shame.
