Format fanboys (and girls), we sure hope you've taken the time to cool your apparently heated jets, because
AVS Forum is putting its foot down from here on out. Just days after the site
shut down the HD DVD / Blu-ray boards due to the zaniness that was ensuing, it has reopened the forums for new postings -- but there's a laundry list of rules to go with it. Granted, the site does recommend finding a new home to vent your off-topic frustrations if you aren't down with the new regulations, but overall, we think they're pretty fair. Effectively immediately, users aren't allowed to throw out sales figures, troll others, attack statements or petition for one format or the other. For those who slip up and cross the newly drawn line, you will likely be banned and have your posts removed, so we'd recommend thinking thrice before pulling the trigger on a rage-filled writeup over there.

That doesn't leave much open for discussion.
Jimmy @ Nov 12th 2007 6:10PM
Actually, I think it allows discussions of the things that should be discussed. Hopefully, the discussion will move in the direction of all other AV discussions and away from this stupid war.
Which player provides the best picture and sound?
Which movie is the showcase for displaying your home theater?
I am having problem XYZ with components A, B, and C: anyone know how to fix it?
Imagine being able to discuss either of the above questions without having to read through 90 posts that say "Blow-Ray is the suck" or "HD DUD is lame".
Ken @ Nov 12th 2007 4:46PM
Am I the only one who finds this hilarious?
Come on, death threats over a HD format!? I lubs teh intarwebs.
Marshall @ Nov 12th 2007 4:49PM
Good for them. AVS needs too do something in general. I feel they've gotten far to big to be useful, to many questions without searching first, anonymous nature leads to fly-by worthless posts, and repost of popular topics divide discussion into may threads. That's the nature of running a huge board, I suppose

Honestly, they are just hurting themselves by doing this. As long as they desegnate a "smackdown" type of area they wouldn't be turning away so many users. They make money off of page impressions and banner clicks. They shouldn't want to turn anyone away.
From now on I will stick to HighDefDigest for Format war discussion and AVS for other electronics discussion.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD fanboys are intolerable. You can't discuss HD movies anywhere without idiots coming out of the woodwork to tell you that some disc outsold something else 4:1 so a format is doomed.
I've never seen so many pretend economists in my whole life.

As annoying as fanboy rants are, I have a hard time arguing against people opening their eyes to how our system works.
One of my greatest gripes about America (and the world, I guess) is that the populace pays less and less attention to important matters, instead immersing themselves in matters of little or no consequence.
While this issue is one of those matters, hearing (reading?) people discuss large- and small-scale economics is exciting, the cost and factors of production... Knowledge really is power. I just can't argue that a better informed populace is a bad thing.
Now if we could only get people this riled up about politics...
Iscariote @ Nov 13th 2007 8:56AM
So two optical disc formats are important matters? I think the problem is that otherwise intelligent (or maybe not) people spend all day yelling about 1080p24 instead of directing their energy to things that actually matter.
Big Sam @ Nov 12th 2007 5:40PM
Only if you mean real issues and not the useless ones that come up around election time.

Well, there's always the The HD DVD / Blu-ray WAR ZONE at Satelliteguys.

some people are just children that never group up....
the whole thing to me is the equivalent of "I know you are but what am I, I know you are but what am I, I know you are but what am I, I know you are but what am I, I know you are but what am I, I know you are but what am I, I know you are but what am I, I know you are but what am I,..........."
