The Bourne Ultimatum DVD / HD DVD combo disc landing on December 11th
Let's face it: there's a high probability that you (or someone you know) will be frantically searching for a stocking stuffer at the last minute next month, so it's mighty convenient that Universal Studios is unleashing The Bourne Ultimatum a fortnight before Christmas. The DVD / HD DVD combo disc will include a number of deleted scenes, feature commentary with director Paul Greengrass / actor Matt Damon and several bonus clips titled Man on the Move, New York Chase, Planning the Punches, Rooftop Pursuit and Driving School. Oh, and just in case you're too big a fan to only drop $39.98 (MSRP) on this, you can opt for the four-disc "The Jason Bourne Collection" -- which we can only assume will also be released on HD DVD at this point -- when it lands in a snazzy "safe deposit box" package with a Jason Bourne passport (huzzah!).

$39.98... OUCH!
Richard S. @ Nov 9th 2007 12:11AM
I'm an avid Bourne fan, and have the other two discs, but $40 does seem a bit much... Hopefully eBay or Amazon will make this pill a little easier to swallow.
Porfirio Reyes @ Nov 9th 2007 3:19AM
Ya, it is, but luckily, I was able to order it for free as a part of the A3 3 free hd-dvd offer from Best Buy! Can't wait!
LiqwidZero @ Nov 9th 2007 12:32PM
You'll never pay $40 if you pay online. $27 on Amazon, usually.
That's like saying a BD guy actually payed $43-49 for Spidey 3... did anyone pay that much?
Alex @ Nov 9th 2007 12:02AM
damn I thought they weren't gonna do anymore combos
LiqwidZero @ Nov 9th 2007 12:34PM
Warner Bros. said that, but that was a lie as well. WB stated that "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" would be the last combo, but it turns out "The Invasion" is one too.
Mike @ Nov 9th 2007 12:12AM
I cant wait to pick this up on Blu-Ray!! Oh wait, a war is preventing that. Silly Universal. only selling movies on two formats and missing out on millions in revenue just to....ummm....well.... lower income so they dont have to pay higher taxes? It all makes sense! They dont like giving money to the IRS!! If only the next president would get rid of the IRS and then the war will end. That means we should all vote for Ron Paul and the Nex Gen High Def Movie Format War will end? Maybe...
JeffDM @ Nov 9th 2007 12:25AM
I just watched this tonight, at a second-run theater.
I think Univeral's current HD-DVD packaging theme is getting a bit old, but I've never really liked it. I think the way other studios do package design is nicer without reusing the same elements on every release.
Cam @ Nov 9th 2007 12:42AM
DVDs are still MSRP at like $30...amazon will probably have this for like 27 bucks or so. Why even post the MSRP anyway? No one charges that amount anymore
HDpurist @ Nov 9th 2007 12:45AM
No doubt....$40!!! OUCH!!!
And people complain that BDs have always been more expensive...couldn't be farther than the truth. BD has ALWAYS been cheaper then HD-D$$$D!
BD even supports BOGO!
zargon @ Nov 9th 2007 1:04AM
It is MSRP, not retail, get over it. HDM comes with a premium, if you look at the averages, both formats are pretty neck and neck.
The BOGO was just BDA's way to buy support. If for a second you thought it was about bring BD to you at a lower cost, you have a lot to learn. Kind of like HD-DVDs $99 player, though not as smart. While more software sales for a week may mean you just squeak by fending off the biggest HD-DVD title, 90,000+ more hardware in 3 days means more software sales in the long run.
Cash @ Nov 9th 2007 2:55AM
In what world have BD's always been cheaper?
Amazon, bestbuy.com et al beg to differ....
Region Free HD @ Nov 9th 2007 7:07PM
@HDpurist "BD even supports BOGO!"
BOGO? What's that, the name of some Profile 1.1 interactive feature?
;)
HDpurist @ Nov 9th 2007 7:17PM
zargon, keep in mind that +90,000 A2 owners don't even know it can play HD-DVD. They think playing normal DVDs in it would produce the HD picture. Really, we're talking about regular Walmart customers who aren't exactly the demographic to purchase the higher priced HDM films.
In reality, these A2 sales numbers won't make a scratch to the hi-def war.
JK @ Nov 9th 2007 1:26AM
The combo disc idea is would be great if they'd keep the MSRP the same as a regular disc. I can't believe it cost another $10 to make it. So by getting greedy they are hurting themselves in the "war". As soon as the BD camp starts pointing out the HD DVDs are more expensive it will sway some purchasers their way.
BTW I believe neither format will win and both formats will co-exist until downloadable replaces them both.
Cam @ Nov 9th 2007 2:19AM
Blu-ray discs MSRP is still $35, so it's $5 more, not $10...stop making stuff up.

HD4ME @ Nov 9th 2007 2:00AM
HDpurist, the return of the blu troll h4idol.
I would rather pay a few bucks more for the HD DVD disc, especially with PIP etc, than $1000 for a spec 1 or 1.1 BR player that is sliding into obsolescence.
Cam @ Nov 9th 2007 2:24AM
Your comments are just so dumb that I don't think people even know how to respond:
"BD even supports BOGO!"
WTF does that even mean? Supports Buy one Get One? How can you support something that's just plain commonplace everywhere? Oh the lengths sony will go to sell more BD players and movies, giving them away...just sad
JK @ Nov 9th 2007 3:29AM
You should really learn how to read English and not accuse posters of "making things up". At no point did I write that the difference in Blu Ray to HD DVD is $10. I wrote the difference between a combo disc and a regular disc (HD DVD) is around $10. I just bought an HD DVD player and the average price of a combo disc was $35 and non-combo disc $25. My point is still valid. Most HD DVD users don't want to be forced to pay a $10 premium for a combo disc and it is something the BD camp can use against HD DVD.
Cam @ Nov 9th 2007 11:33AM
@JK
My bad
Ed @ Nov 9th 2007 3:30AM
@ HDpurist
Ok, you only have the second dumbest post (so far). BTW, why the hell did you choose "HDpurist" as your user name!? You're a Blu troll fanboy. It should be 'BLUpurist' or 'BDpurist'. 'HDpurist' implies that you're still in denial and are truly a HD-DVD fan at heart and you just want to ruffle some feathers...kind of like a gay republican -- hypothetically speaking, of course.
D@n @ Nov 9th 2007 5:36AM
Yeesh, all it takes is one blue or red troll to make a comment and it starts a flame war and childish comments fly back and forth.
Don't feed the trolls!
James @ Nov 9th 2007 8:27AM
It would be nice to have one HD DVD thread that doesn't contain jealous BD fanboy comments. One can only hope.
ryan @ Nov 9th 2007 9:00AM
I am all over this. My wife loves the bourne series so my local best buy will get a sale on this one. Need to replace bourne supremacy as well.
LA26 @ Nov 9th 2007 11:34AM
This is one release I wish wowuld've made it to Blu-Ray.
Still could but it would be a tedious rip and burn process ;_;.
Eddie @ Nov 9th 2007 12:20PM
This movie will not break any records (I don't think), but this will easily be the best movie on HD DVD as soon as it comes out.
This movie was INCREDIBLE and I would pay $50 for it. Intelligent and moving, but exciting and action packed. A very rare film, especially in the braindead blockbuster season.
HDpurist @ Nov 9th 2007 6:46PM
Eddie, you need to watch more films. Bourne is nowhere near INCREDIBLE as you suggested. I would say the Bourne series is marginally better than Transformers.
Watch this: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1048/ratatouille.html
Eddie @ Nov 9th 2007 7:03PM
HDPurist:
I'm sorry, I should have clarified my previous post! I forgot I was posting to a mixed audience. Bourne is incredible *to adults*. Adults who can appreciate the magic a well crafted adult action / drama can provide.
Of course, your cartoon is probably better. I hope you'll forgive me for enjoying a film with complexity, an age requirement and a message that amounts to more than "drug free works for me" for adults who live in a complex world.
By the way, you seem like a good kid, I hope we can continue this conversation once you've moved out of your mom's house and into that complex adult world.
And for the record, I don't fault you for supporting BluRay. In fact, I say you should support BluRay for as long as you can.
After all, I too once believed in fairy tales.
Michael @ Nov 10th 2007 7:47AM
@ Eddie - Freakin' Sweet Post dude!
mattbrown @ Nov 9th 2007 9:18PM
I think that is a ridiculous asumption. Granted that Walmart shoppers in general aren't the brightest class, no ignorant shopper would break their neck to buy an upconverting DVD player when they could've bought one cheaper before then. The general public is a least aware of the two formats; have you not seen commercials for both on regular television?
Michael @ Nov 10th 2007 7:44AM
@HD Purist - you are an arrogant prick. Claiming that "90,000+ A2 owners don't even know it can play HD-DVD" is such faulty logic I don't even know where to begin. First, I guarantee that those shoppers who bought players last Friday morning knew exactly what they were buying. How else do you explain most locations being out by 8:15am? Those customers were there on a mission - to buy an A2 specifically to be able to play HD-DVDs. If there were any units sold using your premise, it would have had to be an extremely tiny number. I honestly don't believe that people are as ignorant as you claim them to be. Just because they aren't videophiles like most of us are, that doesn't mean they aren't aware that the HD formats exist. HDTV has been around long enough that pretty much everyone has seen it somewhere. HD-DVD is riding the coat tails of that exposure more than you obviously want to believe.
Secondly, in case you haven't noticed, most HD-DVD discs, players and store displays prominently feature signage that you have to use HD to view HD. All the discs I've seen are marked that way. Every endcap too. Last time I checked, J6P can still read...
zargon @ Nov 10th 2007 9:35AM
Wow, you are even more delusional than I thought.
The majority of the people who bought the A2 knew it was a HD-DVD player that can play HD-DVDs. For one, not all 90,000+ were sold at Walmart, so there goes your weak theory on that. Second, the A2 is going for more than most (31 to be exact, this is including up-converting, combo players and even portable) DVD players. Your idea of a Walmart customer is not going to spend even $99 for a HD-DVD player when they can get DVD players for $30 or $40 for a up converting DVD player.
HDpurist @ Nov 10th 2007 8:25PM
LOL, you HDDVD fans are in such denial. Those (particularly Walmart) who've bought the A2 have done 1 or both of these:
1. Played DVDs thinking that it was producing HD-DVD quality.
2. Bought thinking they could play Blu-ray.
Besides, didn't most of these Walmart customers vote for the Bush government afterall?
HDpurist @ Nov 10th 2007 8:26PM
Not only is Toshiba attempting to flood the market with A2s by selling low and losing big profits on these sales, they've even completely killed any potential sales on their more expensive HD-DUD players or any other competing HD-DVD players!
LOL. Great strategy Toshitba.
DrNo @ Dec 12th 2007 10:09AM
$40? Bah. Just picked up the entire TRILOGY on Amazon for $19.99. It is currently selling as a preorder on Amazon for $49.99 and I signed up for the Visa Amazon card which gives $30 off your first purchase. Can't wait till it arrives!
P.S. Own an A2 and understand HD DVD. ;)
P.P.S. The war isn't about hardware. It's about gaining new customers who will continue to buy software. Just look at the computer boom and you'll understand what its all about.
