I see no reason why it should be obsolete just because one format goes away. The person still get's to play the surviving format. And anyone buying a combo unit like this one will still have spent less than many Blu-ray early adopters.
The format war could end today and the movies I have on the losing format will still be able to be played. Nothing obsolete about that.

Sadly, dual format players will be obsolete once that other format goes away for good. Umm... and I'm not referring to blu-ray!

You're right, in 10-12 years, HD DVD probably will be obsolete and we'll have to buy new players.
