Xbox 360 HD DVD drive comes with free Heroes S1 set at Best Buy Sunday
Rumored all-in-one units aside, Xbox 360 owners looking for HD DVD still need an add-on drive and this weekend the deal could be getting a whole lot sweeter. Leaked scans of a supposed upcoming Best Buy ad reveal the $99 SRP Heroes: Season One seven-disc HD DVD set will be bundled for free; the recently updated five free HD DVD offer and existing King Kong pack-in combine to take make the $179 drive essentially free. We're not sure what will make the difference in the ongoing format war, but throw in enough free movies and even Michael Bay will have to shout.
Update: This deal also appears to be in effect at Buy.com until 11/4.

this is just getting pathetic now, any and every opportunity "please buy HD-DVD, PLease buy"!!! Any one who does this fair play your getting your money's worth but Jesus Toshiba you have no respect in the Film industry anymore.
Let the HD-DVD fan-boyism commence

@ A1
Maybe I'm missing something, but how this any different than getting 5 Free Blu-Ray movies when you buy a Blu-Ray player?
zik @ Oct 19th 2007 8:41PM
@A1
And what is Blu-ray doing with their buy one get one free firesale?
MAK1981 @ Oct 20th 2007 9:59AM
You are in so much denial, lol. B1G1 to compete with just Transformers, and HD-DVD is the pathetic one. My God. Get a girl.
severian00 @ Oct 19th 2007 9:10PM
Maybe it's the math. Heroes SSN1 is even at it's cheapest $80, King Kong $20, and 5 free movies say at a value of $20 each = $200 worth of movies for buying a $179.99 item. That means that MS and Toshiba are paying you to buy it. I'm going to buy a second one (1st was when they first came out and I have 2 360's). This is a hell of a deal.
polyh3dron @ Oct 20th 2007 9:33PM
Maybe it's different because they're giving away not only 5 free HD DVDs by mail, but copies of King Kong and Heroes on top of it. That's what makes it different from the 5 free BD promo and makes the HD DVD camp looks desperate.
polyh3dron @ Oct 20th 2007 9:36PM
HD DVD's doing a BOGO "fire sale" as well. Plus they're throwing an $80 boxset in for free with a player, plus they're doing the 5 free movies by mail thing.
Tom Strong @ Oct 19th 2007 8:59PM
This deal would be cool if Heroes was actually a good series. Give me Galactica in High Def and I'd buy an HDDVD player without question.
TrentD @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:49AM
You'll have your chance - Season 1 of Battlestar Galactica comes out on December 4th in glorious HD DVD.

guys i agree with you, but i live in the UK and giving a free HD_DVD player (not what the article is about) away with matrix was the last point i thought they'd go, now this, it just starts getting ridiculous. Yeah HD-DVD bogof is fine but man they must be losing so much money, it's not impressive
TrentD @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:50AM
So when Sony loses $250 per PS3 sold, that's not desperation?
Stop drinking the Kool-aid...this format war is requiring both sides to take desperate measures.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Oct 19th 2007 9:29PM
@ A1
Yea, but you don't think Sony is losing any money?? You know they were banking on the PS3 being a big success so they could push their format on everyone... That really isn't panning out like they wanted I'd say. Not to say Sony is losing the format war or anything, far from it. They're the ones to beat, but they aren't really crushing HD-DVD or anything either.
Eric @ Oct 19th 2007 9:31PM
If I had the cash, I'd buy it. I don't have an XBox 360, but I could use it on my PC, at least.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Oct 19th 2007 9:38PM
You can get the bare drives by themselves on ebay for about $80
Evan @ Oct 20th 2007 1:12AM
makes me want to buy another one, photocopy all the receipts, and get all the deals.
seriously.... sometimes i hate being an early adopter.
Evan @ Oct 20th 2007 1:13AM
oops... forgot to mention return it too since i already have one.
stephenvandeusen @ Oct 21st 2007 11:05PM
Would that even be possible? To buy the HD-DVD drive and get Heroes free, then just return the drive and keep Heroes?
Darkest Daze @ Oct 20th 2007 8:51AM
I'm honestly debating picking this up. Not because of the heroes alone, but the whole deal with all the movies makes it really worth it. I honestly would probably end up selling the Heroes set since I saw the first season and it's not really something you feel like going back to watch a second time.
Larry @ Oct 20th 2007 9:33AM
This is a great deal if you don't already own one.
FrankTheCrank @ Oct 20th 2007 10:50AM
The HD-DVD drive looks so janky next to the 360. Even worse when you have a so called Elite...it doesn't even match.
WTF?
Marshall @ Oct 20th 2007 10:54AM
And the flood of Heroes HD-DVDs on ebay begins in 3, 2, 1...

this deal is legit - and i am annoyed i bought one about 2 months ago... i may buy this and give the drive as a gift or sell it.... very annoying - but its quite a deal....
klew @ Oct 20th 2007 3:44PM
all I got from Best Buy was a free copy of 300, this is better, I guess because it is a more expensive title, and I wanted both titles anyway
JeffDM @ Oct 20th 2007 4:00PM
If it were a deal that was good with a Toshiba unit, then maybe I'd go for it.
DeadPlasmaCell & zik; I think this set is on top of the 5 free HD-DVD mail-in deal.
Dman @ Oct 20th 2007 11:52PM
the HD_A2 gives you 5 free movies....at least when i got it, it did.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Oct 21st 2007 4:33AM
So let me get this straight.. 5 free movies is ok, but 7 is just desperate? So what does that make the 7 free Blu-Ray movie deal then? Cuz by your own reasoning that would be desperation on the Blu-Ray camps part..

texaswolf @ Oct 20th 2007 11:50PM
@ A1
Both formats are giving away free movies with players...it's nothing new....pay attention, and quit trying to blow smoke.
elendil850 @ Oct 21st 2007 11:30PM
So someone could purchase the HD DVD drive, get Heroes Season 1 for free, and then just return the drive and keep Heroes?
ftaok @ Oct 22nd 2007 3:52PM
@elendil850
Probably not. It's probably listed on the receipt as some sort of bonus deal and that all items need to be returned for a refund. I don't think Best Buy would make a mistake like that.
ft
CCM @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:36PM
As a BBY employee, I can tell you that the answer is no. If one was to attempt to return the HD DVD player without the Heroes disks (within 30 days, with receipt), they could, less the cost of the disks. Or return the whole package (unopened) for a full refund.
ben @ Oct 24th 2007 1:35PM
Get to Best Buy now!!!
190 bucks including tax just got me:
HD DVD Player kit for 360 ($180)
King Kong (comes in box with player (maybe $25))
Two HD Movies 34.99 and under (I got Transformers and 300 ($65)
Heroes Season 1 ($100)
All items above i walked out with in my hands, plus you get 5 more free via a mail in rebate form (some will be crap, but there are a few good ones to pick from including full metal jacket (say 25 each, $125)
Total Value of $525 including tax.... You probably couldnt buy all of these in DVD format for this price...
Hopefully HD wins this format war... with deals like this im sure it will....
Travis @ Oct 25th 2007 10:49PM
get to best buy like the man said, i got the drive with king kong, Heroes S1 and superman and transformers. Not to mention the 5 free movies you can mail in for, yea they aren't the greatest titles, but it is for sure worth it.
and if you dont like the add on drive, ebay it and get a stand alone if you like.
great deal!
OH AND BY THE WAY IT ENDS THIS SATURDAY SO BETTER HURRY!
