Sony releases $399 40GB PS3 for the US -- November 2nd
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sony will announce their 40GB PS3 today for $399. Right, the same PS2 incompatible, 2x USB port model already announced for the rest of the gaming world. That's $50 more than Microsoft's Xbox 360 (with 20GB disk) and $150 more than the Wii. Still not date, or official press release from Sony but that should be rectified on the quick as the US wakes up to a retrenched, domestic console war.Update: It's official! This from Reuters: the 40GB model will be on sale November 2nd and the 80GB model will be reduced to $500.

Now we're talkin. Still needs some killer games though, but lets be honest PS3 was never about the games.. It's about pushing Blu-Ray on to everyone.
h4ldol @ Oct 18th 2007 7:44AM
As for games, Warhawk destroys the jaggy-filled 680p "masterpiece" Halo 3. Oh please. Let the Xbox fanboys keep their crappy games, what PS3 needs is games developed for the PS3's awesome hardware. Of course, those games will not play on the 360 as it would likely play at 10Hz and cause it to explode.
h4ldol @ Oct 18th 2007 7:37AM
Ouch! For HD DUD that is. The end is coming poor HD DUD fanboys... better unload your problematic and slow Toshibas on some poor unwitting suckers on Ebay and jump on the $400 PS3 before they become as scarce as the Wii!
DeadPlasmaCell @ Oct 18th 2007 8:32AM
LoL come on now h4idol, How could the end be coming if HD-DVD is already dead?
Ed @ Oct 19th 2007 3:40AM
FIRST: h4Idol, I sincerely hope you purchased one of the original 60 GB PS3 since the "new" 40GB and 80GB units either can't do backwards compatibility and/or are missing memory and USB slots. I choose not to buy a PS3 off the bat and now I don't regret it since Sony is still playing catch up through SUBTRACTION. Oh yeah, the controllers still don't have the ability to vibrate (they should have settled that stupid lawsuit sooner, like before launch).
SECOND: If you want anyone to respect your opinion, you need to a) FIRST EXPLAIN WHY YOU HAVE TAKEN A STANCE FOR OR AGAINST SOMETHING, then b) DO YOUR BEST TO PRESENT FACTS AND LOGIC SUPPORTING SAID OPINION AND IN TURN, NOT MISTAKING BIAS FOR SAID FACTS, and c) STAY ON TOPIC, INSTEAD OF TAKING ANY OPPORTUNITY TO BITCH ABOUT HD DVD WITHIN THIS OR ANY BLOG YOU SUBSCRIBE TO. BTW, I'm still waiting (possibly all of us) for a response on why you don't like HD DVD anyway (I think it's going on a week now).
THIRD: If you are being compensated in any way, shape, or form, from any of the companies backing Blu-Ray technologies, then more power to you!
...If not, then you're just being a childish d-bag that needs to focus your energies on something more meaningful in life.

Format war isnt even close to over... Love it when Blu-Ray fanboys swear by it... Eventually theres gonna be an overflow of HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo players, then its not going to matter which format you buy... You cant go by how many people purchase blu-ray and HD-DVD media either... Everyone knows people would rather rent movies instead of being left with a crap movie... And joystiq already showed that Netflix announced HD-DVD doubling those of Blu-Ray rentals...
PS3 lost its PS2 backwards compatibility and Sony said its not supporting it either, the blu-ray player isnt even 1.1 compliant, and it dropped lots of key features which you would assume would still be there considering technology gets cheaper over time...
I'm still on the fence with getting one, but jeezus, those who bitch about "blu-ray is the best" and dont support it with any facts, please dont bother commenting...
domerdel @ Oct 18th 2007 10:00AM
andy: it's not 1.1 complaint yet... unlike standalone players, it is very likely it will handle a firmware update to get it to be 1.1 compliant..

"Update: It's official! This from Reuters: the 40GB model will be on sale November 2nd and the 80GB model will be reduced to $500."
Cool. And what about the 60GB version ? There are still a shitload of them on the shelves at FutureShop here. Make it $450 and I might be very, very interested.
domerdel @ Oct 18th 2007 11:17AM
If someone were to ask me which version to buy, buy the 60 gb for the most BC and ports. 2nd choice would be the 40gb model. and in either choice, buy a bigger HDD if you need it, got a 160 gig for 58 bucks, runs great!
Kevin Murphy @ Oct 18th 2007 11:32AM
Hmmm ... if it won't play PS2 games, what games will it play? Or are some PS3 games out now?
Vince @ Oct 18th 2007 11:54AM
Ya, great news guys. Oh, and by the way, Toshiba just bought the cell processing plant. Sony is selling the farm just to keep this hunk off junk afloat.
Juice @ Oct 18th 2007 1:46PM
ouch another price drop, if Blu Ray fails Sony is going to have some major issues, atlest their LCDs have been doing decent. Great for consumers though, this may put preassure on MSoft to do another price drop of their own or maybe make a player with a built in HDDVD drive. I have all three consoles and must say the PS3 has been the worst, its works as a fantastic blu ray player just not much of a gaming console (thusfar anyways). h4ldol are you kidding, crappy Halo 3? besides the orange box and Bio Shock its the best release to date this year, and it terms of sales, well I dont think I need to go there $170 million first day, not too bad I guess for a crappy 680p game. You have to love the uneducated comments such as that, first off all who cares about rez, 680p vs 720p vs 1080i vs 1080p. Resolution is only one part of the picture, its like when people buy those crappy no name 1080p LCD tvs and think they have the best picture going when a EDTV fujitsu blows it out of the water. Halo 3 looks great, so I could care less about specs, the only thing you should trust is your eyes, and mine are very happy.
John B @ Oct 18th 2007 2:35PM
@Juice:
"if Blu Ray fails Sony is going to have some major issues"
I don't know about that. I'm not a Sony basher (I'm also not an irrational, frothing-at-the-mouth fanboy), but they seemed to have weathered the Betamax and Mini-Disc failures pretty well. But I agree that a price drop will only help the consumer in the long run. If anything, it could lead to more inexpensive dual-format players so that the whole HD DVD/BR issue will become as moot as DVD-R/DVD+R.
And just ignore h4ldol. Don't you know that you're not supposed to feed the trolls?
RockPaperScissor @ Oct 18th 2007 2:34PM
Its cool to hear the price point is goin down on the machine but really at what cost? Anyone know if its still Wi-Fi enabled? The PS2 incompatibility may suggest the red laser may not be part of the drive system, if thats the case it may not support CD or DVD. Does anyone have a link to an official press release?
Juice_oo7 @ Oct 18th 2007 3:16PM
Well I didnt mean Sony would go out of business or anything, but I do think that they have put themselves at a bigger risk then before with beta, and MiniDisc. They did have the best last gen console with the playstation 2. The PS3 has some power, but was delayed due to the blu ray unit, so as the unit was on hold the graphics units stayed the same and continued to be more outdated, the PS3s graphics unit isnt much better then the 360s yet it came out a year later. They have also completely neglected the gaming comuunity thus far, the 360 has this war wrapped up already I think, yes I know wii sells more but for target adult male audience the 360 wins. If Blu Ray fails what am I going to do with my PS3, use it as a paper weight? They also have had the virus CD issue, laptop battery recall. At some point also all these other CE manufacture are going to want some money, Toshiba outsells Pioneer, Panny, Sony, LG, and Samung when it comes to hi def player sales. You have to think that there will be a point where these guys want a slice of the pie. Its probably a good thing for Toshiba that they are the only guy doing HDDVD, they get the most money back to make up all the research cost of the format. Anyways its still eary, lots of things can happen, and I already have both formats so I am good. Cant wait to see this war really get going right up to Superbowl season. Cheers All

Juice:
" PS3s graphics unit isnt much better then the 360s yet it came out a year later"
Give it time for more exclusive titles. You don't see a change in graphics much, because of the lack of library, and those neutral studios are just doing ports from X360 > PS3.
Sony definitely tripped themselves up with the development standards (or re-standards rather). Developers got very comfortable with X360, and resist PS3.
Kevin G @ Oct 18th 2007 6:36PM
The 60G version has the most flash card readers, wi-fi, and a hardware PS2 emulator that works very well. The newer versions have no wi-fi and a software PS2 emulator that apparently does not work as well as the hardware emulator in the 60G version. You can still play MOST PS2 games on ANY PS3. As for PS3 games, Motorstorm online, Blazing Angels online, Gran Turismo HD(free download) online, RFOM online, these are what we're playing. They're great games, but they're only the beginning. The PS3 games that are coming out next year, plus the fact that Playstation online is free, will make Microshaft obselete.
domerdel @ Oct 18th 2007 6:54PM
Kevin G:
Pending an official PR from Sony, I would think they would still include wifi in the NEWER models (80 gb and upcoming 40 gb) it was the 20 gb that did not have wifi.

The 40 GB version of PS3 WILL NOT PLAY PS2 games.
Smee @ Oct 18th 2007 9:16PM
If PS3 double their results from this, there sales will still be miserable.
PS3 is being smashed by Wii, XBox 360, DS, PS2,& PSP.
I will however admit,it is beautifully engineered............for a doorstop.
Smee @ Oct 18th 2007 9:43PM
Update: It's official! This from Reuters: the 40GB model will be on sale November 2nd and it still doesn't have any decent games. It's a lovely blu paperweight though.
JBDragon @ Oct 19th 2007 12:51AM
Still see no reason to buy a PS3. Games? Nothing really worth having with so many great 360 games that are so much better. Blu-Ray? I want nothing to do with Double Copy protection, and being basically a Beta tester for a Unfinished format. I'm for the games. I really don't care WHO makes the Game Console, Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo as long as it has the games I want to play on it. There's so many great games on the 360, there's no way to find enough time to even play a small fraction of them. The PS3? Nothing really Original. So what if online is FREE, It sucks. You can get LIVE for under $4 a month. If you can't even afford that, you shouldn't be gaming. LIVE is also FREE if you don't want to onine game but do everything else.
Maybe next Generation I'll buy a PS4?!?! Sony is going to have to step it up though. I'll NEVER buy a Blu-Ray Movie, Period, but I'll buy a great PS4 game even if it's on Blu-Ray. If Sony can get the Great games out and Online fixed a whole hell of a lot better, I can just as easily go with Sony.
New price drop doesn't have any effect on me buying one. I'd rather still buy a Wii over a PS3. I just don't need a Expensive Door Stop, or Paper Weight. Sony was right when they said People would buy a PS3 even if there wasn't any games. Well they were kind of right. Some people have gotten PS3's, but FAR, FAR, FAR more and buying other consoles, and the PS3 is even being badly beat by the PS2 which is really sad. Who is going to buy a PS2 and then a short time later go and also buy a PS3? FEW!!! Sony is killing their own PS3 market.
Craig WB @ Oct 19th 2007 1:32AM
Any one who says PS3 has no decent games is just retarded, All the great games that 360 has minus around maybe 5 - 10 good titles are on the PS3 as well. And for each of those 5 - 10 good 360 titles the PS3 has 5 - 10 of it's own and on top of that a bunch of timed exclusives like UT3.
Ultimately though this is a cheap Blu-ray player with big benefits and I'll probably end up picking up this in the end as quite frankly I have a PS2 so I don't need the backwards compatibility.
Smee @ Oct 19th 2007 2:21AM
@CraigWB
PS 3 has shi* games, everyone other then you knows that. Why else is it such a miserable sales disaster?
PS3 has NO game in the current USA top 10, and only 3 in the top 30, sales numbers dont lie!
