Sony loading up four theatres with 4K SXRD digital cinema systems
Movie-goers in Dallas, Indianapolis, Riverside, California, and San Diego, you can go ahead and color us officially envious. Your lucky cities will soon host a total of 54 CineAlta SXRD 4K digital cinema systems from Sony, with an unspecified mix of 10,000 lumen SRX-R210 and 18,000 lumen SRX-R220 models planned to shock and wow customers at four AMC locales. The units were unsurprisingly crafted specifically for use in (home?) theaters, and will be paired up with Sony's LMT-100 Media Block servers. Barring any unforeseen disasters, installation should begin next month in the aforementioned areas, and holiday crowds should be enjoying a delightful visual experience before the year's end.[Via TGDaily]

I saw Danny Boyle's 'Sunshine' in Los Angeles on one of these 4K sony's. Holy freaking crap. We got there a little late, 4th row from the front, but it was SO crisp and detailed it didn't bother me in the slightest. Amazing technology.

I know Puerto Rico won't... in a long time! I work as a projectionist and it simply breaks my heart to see all them films get torn up and scratched by pulleys... not to mention me having to bend between the platters, setting up the film while it's being pulled by giant spinning discs... *sigh*
I wonder (even though I might loose work due to simpler equipment): "will something better ever come?"
I sure hope so...

San Diego! woohoo!

Don't expect much, you won't be able to tell the difference from a 2K projector and the screen will be less than huge, sure the new model is "better" than the last one, but that one couldn't even light a 25ft screen to spec. If this model performs as well as the last expect the meida block to fail alot and to have an overall unfulfilling experience based on the hype.
Good luck to you though, I'll be goiing out to buy a 7" HD set to mimick the experience.

i don't know about the sony 4K SXRD but the theaters in my local town use all digital DLP and it is absolutely beautiful.

Wow... another technological marvel from Sony. Much like Blu-ray and the PS3. Sad that 51% of Toshiba's business these days is making 1080i HD DUD players.

"HD DUD players."
Can you stop that? You are making the people that like the Blu-Ray format look bad.
